Originally put on by the Womens Division of Federated Farmers (WDFF) to honour the pioneer settlers of the area, it has morphed over the years into an event to honour senior members in our community, both past and present, who have helped make our district such a great place to live. These are the people who built the sports facilities we now enjoy, who supported the schools and churches, and who started clubs and support groups such as Lions and Plunket. It is also a great opportunity for some who've left to come back and catch up with old friends and neighbours. The day starts with a mix and mingle time where many a conversation starts with “Do you remember when ...”, and friendships spanning many decades are renewed. This year lunch was catered by the Otamatea Christian School parent group and had an Irish Ailsa Cullen and Ella Hames theme with lots of green items on the menu. Ailsa Cullen and Ella Hames, both past members cut the cake of the WDFF, cut the celebratory cake, baked by Joy Bonham and iced by Dennise Brownlie. MC Ken Chambers gave a brief history of the Pioneer Luncheon, and guests were treated to musical entertainment from members of local group Otherwise Fine. This year was the largest group for some time with about 150 attendees, quite a number of whom could remember the first Pioneer Luncheon of 1947. The most senior woman attending was Elva Heath and oldest man was Eric Wrigley. Thanks are due to Lions Club members and their partners, the caterers, The Kauri Museum, and the musicians, all of whom worked hard to make this year’s event a special one. Anyone eligible to attend who did not receive an invitation this year should contact Pete Hames 431 6822 to be included next year.
