Lifestyle Village a step closer With the signing of a Sale and Purchase Agreement, one of the biggest building blocks for the creation of the Lifestyle Village has fallen neatly into place. Pioneer Luncheon celebrates 70 years Paparoa Lions annual Pioneer Luncheon was held on St Patricks Day at Paparoa Hall, this year marking its 70th anniversary. Originally put on by the Womens Division of Federated Farmers (WDFF) to honour the pioneer settlers of the area, it has morphed over the years into an event to honour senior members in our community, both past and present, who have helped make our district such a great place to live. These are the people who built the sports facilities we now enjoy, who supported the schools and churches, and who started clubs and support groups such as Lions and Plunket. It is also a great opportunity for some who've left to come back and catch up with old friends and neighbours. The day starts with a mix and mingle time where many a conversation starts with “Do you remember when ...”, and friendships spanning many decades are renewed. This year lunch was catered by the Otamatea Christian School parent group and had an Irish Ailsa Cullen and Ella Hames theme with lots of green items on the menu. Ailsa Cullen and Ella Hames, both past members cut the cake of the WDFF, cut the celebratory cake, baked by Joy Bonham and iced by Dennise Brownlie. MC Ken Chambers gave a brief history of the Pioneer Luncheon, and guests were treated to musical entertainment from members of local group Otherwise Fine. This year was the largest group for some time with about 150 attendees, quite a number of whom could remember the first Pioneer Luncheon of 1947. The most senior woman attending was Elva Heath and oldest man was Eric Wrigley. Thanks are due to Lions Club members and their partners, the caterers, The Kauri Museum, and the musicians, all of whom worked hard to make this year’s event a special one. Anyone eligible to attend who did not receive an invitation this year should contact Pete Hames 431 6822 to be included next year. PP 2 PP www.paparoa.org.nz Paparoa Press

Pahi Road 100km/h Proudly Supporting Paparoa a target too high? OPEN 7 DAYS At the beginning of Pahi Road, Monday-Saturday 7am-6pm, Sunday 9am-5pm the speed limit lifts from 70 to 100km/h. Within the next kilometre there are winding corners more suited to 50km/h, and then further on is a one-lane bridge where you might meet a stock truck or campervan coming from the opposite direction. The NZTA has made use of the slogan '100 - its not a target' in their advertising, but there are some who feel under no obligation to follow any advice. What do locals feel about this limit? After all, there are stretches of Pahi Road where driving at 100km/h can be fairly safe, but now there are more houses than ever along the road. Plus there may be wandering cows or sheep, people walking pets, children getting off school buses and so on - is this limit too high? Should the sign be 'Open Road Speed', which is still 100km/h BUT only when it is safe to do so? On the initial windy corners of Pahi Road observations include: DVD’s $1 to $8 per night  cars blatantly driving on the wrong side of the road, EFTPOS NZ HERALD POST CENTRE cutting the corners to increase their speed,  boats being towed (on unsuitable trailers) going no Phone / Fax 431-7320 faster than 30km/h.
