Marc Di Sotto, MA (Hons) MSc Abstract This thesis investigates the problem of historical representation in the context of the contemporary turns to trauma and memory visible in cultural theory and in wider popular culture and contemporaneous with post-Cold war ‘end of history’ discourse. Rather than apply the theories of trauma to readings of contemporary texts, the present study proposes that trauma theory be seen as part of the wider cultural tendency towards memorialization, characterized by a privileging of the notion of witnessing, an emphasis on the punctuality of the traumatic moment, and the fetishization of the historical trace. This thesis argues that what unites these various features of memorial culture is a notion of history that emphasises both the impossibility of comprehension and representation and yet a sense of proximity to a literal past through the traces that remain. If postmodernism designates a ‘crisis of historicity’ which delegitimizes the authority of representations of history, to think history through the prisms of memory and trauma reasserts a notion of historical truth, albeit relocated in the traumatic memory of the survivor, in the ethical imperative to bear witness, or in an aesthetics of the aporia. The parallel discourses of history as trauma and history as memory conflate the problems of historical representation with problems of historical witnessing, and in doing so conceptualize a notion of an historical event with no actor, proposing instead a passive subject without agency and thus without politics. The thesis is organized through close readings of four key texts, each of which can be read to be in dialogue with wider memorial culture, but which also problematize the orthodoxies of contemporary trauma theory in its application to the literary text—Ian McEwan’s Atonement, Robert Harris’s Fatherland, Philip Roth’s Operation Shylock and Aleksandar Hemon’s The Lazarus Project. Focusing on notions of witnessing, testimony, traumatic memory and the trace, and drawing on the work of Slavoj Žižek and Jacques Rancière, this thesis sets out to resist the theoretical creep that would see all history as trauma and all text as testimony, and instead reasserts the necessary role of fiction and the imagination in constructing a relationship to the past. I can feel in myself, and see in others around me, a powerful nostalgia for the time when history existed. Such nostalgia, in fact, will continue to fuel competition and conflict even in the post-historical world for some time to come. Even though I recognize its inevitability, I have the most ambivalent feelings for the civilization that has been created in Europe since 1945, with its North Atlantic and Asian offshoots.     The Jewish Federation $ 117 HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE AND ISRAEL - Arthur Spiegel’s Legacy. Arthur Spiegel, a man who was so dedicated to helping New Haveners get to know Israel, also fought in its War for Independence. In 1948 at the age of 17, the future Executive Director of the New Haven Jewish Federation left his home in the Bronx to join the Israeli Defense forces. Spiegel’s wife Merle admired his dedication. She said, “He was a very special guy. What eighteen year-old goes off to Israel to fight?” After studying at Hebrew University, the London School of Economics and Columbia University, Spiegel dedicated his life to Jewish causes and later to New Haven. In the beginning of his career Spiegel worked for the ADL in New York City, Florida, and Nebraska. While he was with the ADL he risked his life to help register African-Americans voters in the South. Mrs. Spiegel recalled one incident. She said, “He was warned by the F.B.I. that his number was [up], that they were going to get him at a meeting at night. So he escaped the town in garbage barrels in a truck.” Spiegel brought his intelligence, energy and dedication to New Haven in 1965 to serve as the director of the Connecticut regional office of the ADL. In 1968 the Federation named him Executive Director where he would serve until his controversial retirement in 1989. Mrs. Spiegel said of Arthur, “Number one, besides personality and giving and so forth, he was extremely knowledgeable. He was a student of history.

The second part of the thesis investigates the way loss affected Rosenkranz's writing and the conditions Heidegger saw as necessary for an encounter with Dasein.

We still had boxes from our prior move nearly a decade ago. At the time we had another child on the way, and never managed to unpack between diapers, followed by the dominations of toddlerhood, preschool, and onward from elementary school. Fast forward to the present-day: I ascend to the attic and see all those dusty boxes. I hesitate to open them, for I would be transfixed by the sight of old letters, mementos, fishing gear, useful useless things, and books, and books. Why would I keep so many boxes of books in the age of e-readers? Moving house brings the dilemma of choosing what to retain and what to leave behind. How to make that choice? Marie Kondo’s method of asking if an object brings present joy may work, but what if a thing provokes a poignant longing? What if my future self condemns me for letting go of something that grows with meaning years from now? “Looking back at my life, I realize that the most precious possessions I have are my memories.” Dori Laub began the remembrance of his childhood with this opening. Drawing on Holocaust testimonies, this article explores the crisis of witness- ing constituted by the Shoah and, more generally, problems of integrating and communicating traumatic experiences. Phenomenological, psychological, and ethical perspectives contribute to a systematic investigation of the relation between trauma, memory and testimony. I will argue that preserving personal continuity across the gap between past and present presupposes not only an ‘inner witness’ – which can, according to a long philosophical tradition, be identified with a person’s conscience – but also a social context in which one is addressed and can respond. An attentive listener can bear witness to the witness by accepting the assignation of responsibility implied in testimonial interaction, and thereby support the dialogic restitution of memory and identity.
