Six human pathogenic bacterial strains were selected as test organisms and antibacterial activities were assessed by using disc diffusion method. Maximum inhibition of Enterococcus faecalis was observed by ethanolic dry leaf extract (25.00 ± 0.58). Similarly, methanolic dry leaf extract was very effective against Shigella boydii (25.17±0.44). Higher antibacterial activity was observed by green leaf extracts for other test organisms. Aqueous extract of green leaf showed maximum inhibition (11.50± 0.76) against Staphylococcus aureus. Ethanolic extract of green leaf showed maximum activity (10.17±0.44) against Escherichia coli. Similarly, methanolic extract of green leaf against Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus vulgaris showed maximum antibacterial activities, i.e. (15.50±0.29) and (12.50±0.29) respectively. It was first described by Francis Hamilton in 1798. The tree is natural wild growth in the tropical deciduous forests of Northern, Western and Central India, mostly in the States of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and in Varanasi and Mirzapur districts of Uttar Pradesh. Besides India, the plant is also found in other tropical Asian countries, Australia and Pacific islands. Tree can be identified by dark grey crocodile bark with red blaze and is a good species for afforestation in bare hill slopes. Traditional indigenous knowledge reveals the immense value of almost all parts of the plant i.e. roots, leaves, fruits, seeds and gum for various medicinal uses. Buchanania lanzan, being a vulnerable medicinal plant, is included in the Red Data Book published by International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). This species has high socio- economic value providing livelihood to tribal population of the area and has high potential as commercial horticulture species. -

Very little study has been done on the green plum, so this is an initial screening study of the functional properties and phytochemical profile found in the flesh and seed. The flesh was shown to have antimicrobial properties effective against gram negative (Escherichia coli 9001—NCTC) and gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus 6571—NCTC) bacteria. Scanning electron microscopy analysis shows that the antimicrobial activity causes cell wall disintegration and cytoplasmic leakage in both bacteria. Antioxidant 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) testing shows the flesh has high radical scavenging activity (106.3 ± 28.6 µM Trolox equivalant/g Dry Weight in methanol). The flesh and seed contain a range of polyphenols including gallic acid, ellagic acid, p-coumaric acid, kaempferol, quercetin and trans-ferulic acid that may be responsible for this activity. -

Although review articles on this plant are already published, but this review article is presented to compile all the updated information on its phytochemical and pharmacological activities, which were performed widely by different methods. Studies indicate mango possesses antidiabetic, anti-oxidant, anti-viral, cardiotonic, hypotensive, anti-infl ammatory properties. Various effects like antibacterial, anti fungal, anthelmintic, anti parasitic, anti tumor, anti HIV, antibone resorption, antispasmodic, antipyretic, antidiarrhoeal, antiallergic, immunomodulation, hypolipidemic, anti microbial, hepatoprotective, gastroprotective have also been studied. These studies are very encouraging and indicate this herb should be studied more extensively to confi rm these results and reveal other potential therapeutic effects. Back in the 1940s, she said, University of Miami (UM) football players would sometimes assist with heavy lifting projects around the Garden. Any time there were massive boulders or tree trunks to be moved,A Dr. David Fairchild would phone the UM football coach and make a plea for help. I have never found proof of this in our archives, but the story fits with what we know of Dr. Fairchild’s creativity and persuasiveness. It also reflects a collaborative spirit that still exists between our Garden and local universities. Today we still have massive projects we can’t do ourselves, and we receive help from UM, Florida International University (FIU) and Miami-Dade College (MDC) in unexpected ways. -
