3 Hazards identification MOST IMPORTANT HAZARDS Adverse human health effects : Corrosive. Causes severe burns. Severely irritating to respiratory system and eyes. Risk of serious damage to eyes. Extremely irritating to the digestive tract. Risk of burns. Environmental effects : If the product is not neutralised, it may have harmful effects on the aquatic environment. - Further hazards : Violent reactions may occur on contact with certain chemicals. (Refer to the list of incompatible materials section 10: "Stability-Reactivity"). Very corrosive to metals. Releases hydrogen which forms explosive mixtures in air. On heating : corrosive vapours are released. Specific hazards : According to EC criteria, this product is classified as : - CORROSIVE.

4 First-aid measures Inhalation : Move the affected person away from the contaminated area and into the fresh air. Make the person sit down and rest. Seek urgent medical help. Skin contact : First rinse with plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothing and then rinse again with water. Call a doctor immediately. Eye contact : IMMEDIATELY rinse with plenty of water for a prolonged period, (at least 15 minutes) whilst keeping the eyes wide open. Consult an eye specialist immediately. Ingestion : Rinse mouth out with water. NEVER attempt to induce vomiting. Call a doctor immediately. Protection of first-aiders : Wear protective gloves when administering first aid. Notes to the physician : Take all necessary steps to ensure immediate first aid. Further information : Place contaminated clothing in a sealed bag for disposal.

5 Fire - fighting measures Extinguishing media - Suitable : All extinguishing agents can be used (water, foam, powders, carbon dioxide, sand ...). - Not suitable : None to our knowledge. If there is a fire close by, use suitable extinguishing agents. Specific hazards : NOT combustible. However, it may present a risk in the event of a fire. Corrosive vapours are released. Corrosive solutions are formed in the presence of water.

Specific fire fighting methods : Do NOT attempt to fight the fire without suitable protective equipment. Contain the spread of extinguishing fluids (this product may be hazardous for the environment). Evacuate the personnel away from the fumes. Do not breathe fumes.

6 Accidental release measures Personal precautions : Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Do not breathe fumes. Do NOT attempt to take action WITHOUT suitable protective equipment. Prevent the product from spreading into the environment. Personal protective equipment: - acid-resistant protective clothing. - eye/face protection (safety glasses + visor). - appropriate long gloves. For further information refer to section 8 "Exposure-controls/personal protection". Stop the leak, and if possible, avoid any contact with skin and clothing. Remove all incompatible materials as quickly as possible: - alkalis and caustic products. Environmental precautions : Contain the spilled material by bunding. Prevent the product from spreading into the environment. Methods for cleaning up - Recovery : Absorb with sand. Transfer the product into a spare container: - suitably labelled. - acid-resistant. Keep the recovered product for subsequent disposal. - Neutralization : Neutralize non-recoverable product with :- slaked lime (calcium hydroxide). Absorb spillage with:- diatomaceous earth. - Cleaning/Decontamination : Wash the non-recoverable remainder with sodium carbonate solution (5 % Na2 CO3). - Disposal : Place in an appropriate container and dispose of the contaminated material at a licensed site.

7 Handling and storage

HANDLING Technical measures : Acid-resistant floor. Only use materials resistant to:- acids. Measures : Avoid contact with metals. Do NOT handle without gloves. Avoid the formation or spread of mists in the atmosphere. Safe handling advice : Only use in well-ventilated areas. Storage conditions - Recommended : Store:- in a cool, well-ventilated area. - To be avoided : Store away from incompatible materials. Incompatible products : Alkalis and caustic products.
