IND TRO UCTION The Francesists know about French matters, the Germanists about German matters, the other specialists know about their own matters; those who know about marginal and minor literary cultures are very few; the Italianists mostly know only about Italian matters, and this is quite a problem. (Remo Ceserani) In recent years the definition of ‘World Literature’ has been object of at- tention for a growing number of scholars. As the globalized and intercon- nected world of the 21st century is facing new challenges concerning politics, economics, the environment, as a result, also the academic world has become increasingly globalized and interconnected, not only in the fields of Natural or Social sciences, but also as regards the Humanities and in particular Lit- erature, traditionally considered the most conservative and ‘classical’ field in academic studies. The problem about the universal definition of ‘Literature’ has always been extremely complex, because as stated by Remo Ceserani «for the common experience, the meanings of the term literature, and the various concepts conceived in the course of time, seem to be numerous, diversified, and incompatible with each other» (Ceserani 1999, p. 3). Nevertheless, with the relatively new definition of World Literature, many scholars (Damrosh, Moretti, Pizer etc.) expressed the need to face the problem of re-defining the very concept of Literature, starting from the correction of its Eurocentric tendencies and its distinction between ‘main’ literatures and ‘peripheral’ or ‘minor’ literatures, -

Cameron Hurst III Heian is Japan’s classical age, when court power was at its zenith and aristocratic culture flourished. Understandably, it has long been assiduously studied by historians. The Heian period is the longest of the accepted divisions of Japanese history, covering almost exactly 400 years. Its dates seem obvious: ‘‘The Heian period opened in 794 with the building of a new capital, Heian-kyo¯, later known as Kyoto. The Heian period closed in 1185 when the struggle for hegemony among the warrior families resulted in the victory of Minamoto no Yoritomo and most political initiatives devolved into his hands at his headquarters at Kamakura.’’1 Although the establishment of a new capital would seem irrefutable evidence of the start of a new ‘‘period,’’ some argue that the move of the capital from Nara to Nagaoka in 784 better marks the beginning of the era. Indeed, some even consider the accession of Emperor Kammu in 781 a better starting date. Heian gives way to the next period, the Kamakura era, at the end of the twelfth century and the conclusion of the Gempei War. The end dates are even more contested and include (1) 1180 and Taira no Kiyomori’s forced move of the capital to Fukuhara; (2) 1183 and the flight of the Taira from the capital; (3) 1185, the end of the war and Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa’s confirmation of Minamoto no Yoritomo’s right to appoint shugo and jito¯; or (4) 1192 and Yoritomo’s appointment as sho¯gun. -

The literature in Heian period written by the women revealed their secluded lives while throwing light at the manipulated society which was in favor of men. The primary objective of this paper is to examine the sidelined woman of the society and the author’s psychological perspective through textual analysis of the Poetic literature work- Kagerō Nikki. It throws light at social practices which were often followed in the middle-class society with the help of arguments which are further proved. The introduction focuses on the background of the period and the initiative of diary usage from Asuka Period onwards. It also focuses on the usage of Kana and introduction to diaries written by women while emphasizing on the significance of women diary literature. Secondly, the literary work is studied from the socio-economic and political viewpoint to examine the hypothetical position of the author- Michitsuna no Haha. Apart from her diary, very little information is available in other work regarding her existence. This work gives a detailed description of Michitsuna no Haha’s married life and her position as a secondary wife in the society. -

Reviewed by Naomi Fukumori The Ohio State University As the title of Tomiko Yoda's book suggests, gender and national literature are imbricated in Japan's construction of its modernity. Central to this construction is the role of vernacular narratives written primarily by women in the Heian period (794-1185), particularly those of the tenth and eleventh centuries, which have long been cornerstones of the Japanese literary canon. Because Chinese, as the lingua franca of East Asia, played a role similar to that of Latin in Europe, much of the surviving output of "literature" as such in early Japan was written in Chinese by male courtiers. -

New Voices Volume 5 Writing the irogonomi: Sexual politics, Heian-style April Sprague University of Sydney Abstract Promiscuous “connoisseurs of love” (irogonomi) such as the fictional Genji and the semi- legendary Ariwara no Narihira have come to define popular perception of Heian period sexual politics; that is, their names have become shorthand for male privilege over women. In this article I will complicate established ideas regarding male promiscuity and privilege in the Heian period through an examination of Tales of Ise, Tale of Lady Ochikubo and Tale of Genji. I argue that, although women’s status as linchpins in the practice of “marriage politics” rarely translated into women’s individual empowerment, men’s reliance on marriage politics placed restrictions on men’s sexuality in ways that are rarely acknowledged by modern scholarship. Keywords Heian period, male sexuality, literature, irogonomi, Genji Approximately one thousand years ago, during the flowering of Japanese culture in the Heian period (794–1185), aristocratic women composed vernacular poetry, diaries, and works of fiction that have survived the test of centuries to become staples of classical literature. Although works such as Makura no sōshi, Kagerō nikki, and the poetry of Ono no Komachi and Izumi Shikibu have been the subject of much scholarly attention, Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji) by Murasaki Shikibu emerges as the great representative work of the period. In this article, I call for a re-reading of male sexuality and patriarchy in mid- Heian literature. For my study, I have selected two male-authored texts, Ise monogatari (Tales of Ise) and Ochikubo monogatari (Tale of the Lady Ochikubo), and one female- authored text, Genji monogatari.1 I have identified two particular models of male sexuality present in these works: the better-known ‘promiscuous’ irogonomi—a ‘connoisseur of love’—and the rarely acknowledged monogamous type. -

Primers, Commentaries, and Kanbun Literacy in Japanese Literary Culture, 950-1250CE Jennifer Guest Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Jennifer Guest All rights reserved ABSTRACT Primers, Commentaries, and Kanbun Literacy in Japanese Literary Culture, 950-1250CE Jennifer Guest This project seeks a new perspective on issues of literacy, literary language, and cultural contact in the literature of premodern Japan by examining the primers used to study Chinese-style literature in the Heian and early medieval periods (c. 900-1250CE). Much of Heian literary production was centered on kanbun: “Chinese-style” writing that resembled classical Chinese and mobilized allusive connections to classical Chinese texts, but was usually read based on classical Japanese vocabulary and syntax. The knowledge gleaned from introductory kanbun education forms an important and little-researched common thread linking readers and writers from a wide range of backgrounds – from male and female courtiers to specialized university scholars to medieval monks and warriors eager to appropriate court culture. While tracing the roles of commonly-studied kanbun primers and commentaries in shaping Heian literary culture and its medieval reception, I consider key aspects of premodern Japan literacy – from the art of kundoku (“gloss-reading”) to the systems of knowledge involved in textual commentary and the adaptation of kanbun material. Examining the educational foundations of premodern Japanese literary culture demonstrates that kanbun and other literary styles functioned as closely entangled modes of literacy rather than as native and foreign languages, and that certain elements of classical Chinese knowledge formed a valued set of raw material for literary creativity.
