FOOTBALL CLUB FOUNDED 1897 MEMBERS OF THE COMBINED COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE; SUBURBAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE; THE ALDERSHOT & DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE & THE SOUTHERN YOUTH LEAGUE. AFFILIATED TO THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897. The Club originally played in an area situated at Causeway Farm, which is not too far from our present HQ and was adjacent to the golf and cricket clubs. From stories told by the older members and from ancient records, it appeared that the village side competed and showed well against local opposition. The facilities were not, however, of the standards acceptable today. A horse trough or the pond was the only way to remove the heavy mud left from the sub- standard pitch. In 1953, the Club moved to its present ground in Green Lane, known as the Me- morial Ground. A pavilion was erected and the team competed in the Basing- stoke league before joining the Aldershot league. In 1973, Glynn Howells was appointed manager and, with a further influx of players, HWFC was put firmly on the local footballing map. In Glynn’s six year reign he steered the Club to three successive Aldershot Senior League titles and, on a night to remember, to success in the Aldershot Senior Cup. In 1975, the facilities were upgraded with a bar being incorporated in the pavil- ion, and the playing strength was also improved. In the 1978/79 season, after several seasons in the Aldershot League, Hartley applied to join the Combined Counties league. After the first couple of seasons in the CCFL, Hartley ap- pointed Ian Bedford as manager. A further influx of senior players gave Hartley the success they deserved. Within the first three years of Ian’s reign, Hartley won the league title (season 82/83), Aldershot Senior Cup (80/81), and the George Allen Cup (81/82). They also finished runners-up in the league (80/81) and runners-up in the Aldershot Senior Cup (81/82). During this period a new clubhouse was built and was opened by Peter Osgood. These facilities are ranked as one of the best in the league. David Willoughby, the then secretary/treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, spent exceptional hours in the embryonic stages of this venture. The Club have since strived to maintain their senior status, installing floodlights and a 113 seater stand, and the Club is indebted to the band of volunteer work- ers who keep the Club afloat. It proved too difficult to pick out just one or two from the team that played Eversley in the Christmas Bank Holiday fixture and so the Man of the Match award was given to the whole squad on the day. The sym- bolic bottle of bubbly was presented by Paul Charman to team captain Martin Williams. Hartley won the Bank Holiday derby game 4-0, with two goals from Jack Coventry sandwiched between goals from Jermaine Hamilton (pen) and Ben Dillon. And Dan Brownlie wouldn’t forgive me if I didn’t mention his 3 excellent assists!

It was a bad day at the office. My young lads were out played today by the top team in our league. Yet again I had 5 players missing from our regular starting line up. It was only 2 - 1 at half time and we were still in the game, but the 2nd half was just a night- mare. They upped the tempo and we just could not cope with it - the boys worked hard but it was just not good enough today.

Sometimes your luck runs out and it did today - we had a Ref that wanted to take cen- tre stage and have his own one man show and today was that day. Only one good thing about this show was he was bad for both teams. Let’s just put this one behind us and move on to the next game. [Jamie]

We need to adopt the culture of resting when we are in possession (using the ball properly and moving our opponents around the pitch) and working hard when we don't have the ball. This is the way top sides play now and is the fashionable way to play the game. It is also a style that will suit us as I believe we are the most technically able team in the league.

Guildford did score a second before half time - a well taken header from a corner - an area we have looked a little vulnerable from this season. It was a bullet header, to be fair, that nestled in the top corner.

Second half was very even - both sides had a few chances but overall I feel the fans witnessed an excellent game played in a good manner.

I would like to go on record and wish Guildford success this season. We have played them twice now and they have tried to play football on both occasions, in a good manner, keeping the ball on the ground. They should be the benchmark for all clubs this year and I hope they can go on to win the division.

We’ve been polishing our balls over Christmas… yes, we have not one but two crystal balls at KOB Towers. They have proved very accurate when predicting the future. After a little rub one came up with this picture of our es- teemed gaffer in a few years time. Who’d have thought!

In what is becoming a too consistent feature in our programmes, below is the development of some of our boys in their quest to return to full fitness...

Mike Lee - After suffering a suspension during the away game of our visitors today, Mike Lee returns and he has been biting to get back in the action.

Keiron Thorne - A regular spectator this season due to his unfortunate injury, reports flooding in suggesting that Keiron is beginning to knock a ball about. We very much hope he still has a big role to play this season.

Matt Turnbull - Unfortunately ‘The Mouse’ has had to have an opera- tion on his ACL. We all wish Matt the best in his road to recovery.

Hartley Wintney v Eversley, Tuesday 27th December 2011 Combined Counties League Division 1 In what was labelled the main game of the day in the Combined Counties League, the Hartley boys lined up against an inform Eversley side. Eversley started the brighter, their busy and hardworking central midfielders were closing down the space well and tried rushing Hartley. A great chance fell to their tall forward, Matt Baker, who narrowly headed wide after a cross from the right hand side.

Hartley began to exert some pressure on the Eversley backline and came close on a couple of occasions. The deadlock was finally broken when a shot was blocked by the hand of the Eversley centre forward, the Ref pointed at the spot and Jer- maine Hamilton cooly stroked the ball into the back of the net. Hartley began to have the better of the possession, and the longer the game went on, the more the influential captain Martin Williams managed to get on the ball. A few 'derby day' tackles were starting to fly in but Hartley kept their cool and held their lead.

The second half started as it finished, with Hartley having the better of the chances, and with debutante Steve Noakes leading the backline alongside the ever impressive Chris Paterson. Ryan Stephens eventually ran out of steam which allowed Daniel Brownlie to come on up front, and it was Brownlie who set up the second goal, receiving a cross from the hardworking Fox and neatly laying the ball to the on-running Jack Coventry whose medium paced shot straight at the ‘keeper was spilled into the net by the unfortunate goalkeeper, Shelley.

The second goal cracked the spirit of the Eversley side and gaps started appearing all over the pitch that Hartley exposed well. The third goal came from exactly that. Brownlie received the ball from the stalwart Nathan Stamp, he laid the ball into Coventry's path who slotted the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs.

It was nice to see Hartley playing with the attacking style that had won so many games in the opening stages of the campaign. A great piece of skill from Brownlie, who plucked the ball out of the air and turned the Eversley defender inside out much to the amusement of the crowd, before continuing his run and setting up his hat-trick of assists by neatly laying the ball to substitute Ben Dillon to finish passed Shelley despite a defender’s desperate effort to block his shot. Eversley will certainly be picking up points from other teams during the remain- der of the season, so credit for the way the boys went about their jobs today.

You will be aware that after each game, Paul goes round with his pint glass and asks everyone in the bar to rummage around in their pockets to find a pound to play a scratch card game. The much needed pro- ceeds go towards the running of the club.

Last week, Chris Paterson, our central defender, won the £40 prize!

Unfortunately, Chris was not there to collect his re- ward, so the rest of the boys spent his winnings for him, but made sure Chris received a photo so that he could remember the occasion...
