River Test – Tufton
River Test – Tufton An advisory visit carried out by the Wild Trout Trust – April 2009 1. Introduction This report is the output of a Wild Trout Trust advisory visit undertaken on the River Test at Tufton near Whitchurch in Hampshire. The advisory visit was carried out at the request of the Hampshire Wildlife Trust. The Trust is looking at various options for enhancing local biodiversity and exploring possible habitat enhancement opportunities under Higher Level Stewardship agreements with the landowners. Throughout the report, normal convention is followed with respect to bank identification i.e. banks are designated Left Bank (LB) or Right Bank (RB) whilst looking downstream. 2. Catchment overview The River Test is nationally recognised as the quintessential chalk river and is designated for most of its length as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The Test has a world-wide reputation for being a first class trout (Salmo trutta) fishery. Much of the middle and lower river is heavily stocked with hatchery derived trout to support intense angling activity. Where good quality habitats are maintained the river has the capacity to produce viable numbers of wild fish. A major bottleneck to enhanced wild production is thought to be through poor in- gravel egg survival. Comparatively small areas of nursery habitat also restrict the development of wild stocks. Where decent habitats are found and preserved, survival rates of fry are usually superb due to rapid growth rates. Habitat quality on the Test varies enormously. The river channels are virtually all heavily modified, artificial and originally constructed for power generation or water meadow irrigation. -

Introduction 1.1 Following the revocation of the Regional Spatial Strategies by the new Conservative – Liberal Democrat Coalition Government in June 2010 it is considered necessary to update the original Settlement Hierarchy Background Paper (January 2010) in light of the changes. 1.2 Hart District contains a number of towns and villages that vary in size. It is useful for plan-making purposes to group these settlements into a hierarchy based on an understanding of their current size and level of service provision. 1.3 It is important to note that the hierarchy does not in itself amount to a spatial strategy and does not dictate the levels of growth that will go to different settlements. It is a hierarchy based on the settlements as they are now, rather than as they might look in the future. It is merely a framework around which one or more options for a spatial strategy can be articulated. -

Biodiversity Action Plan for East Hampshire Section 2a: Biodiversity Audit Section 2: Biodiversity Data - 1 - Biodiversity Action Plan for East Hampshire Introduction Biodiversity in East Hampshire is currently, and has been for centuries, extremely varied, due to the diverse geology and ancient history of natural and human processes occurring on the land. The district’s landscapes and the habitats and species they host are outlined in Section 1. Given below is a more detailed account of the extent, distribution and condition of the district’s biodiversity, using the best available knowledge. Habitats Shown below are maps of the district, showing each habitat type – these are derived from a county-wide programme to assess habitat types, using data held by Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre. Also at county-wide level are A Biodiversity Action Plan for Hampshire’s Habitat Action Plans (HAPs) (www.hampshirebiodiversity.org.uk/vol-two.html ). These plans outline priority actions for each habitat type, which have been translated into district-level action in Section 3 through consultation with partners. • All mapped habitats correspond with the Priority Habitats in A Biodiversity Action Plan for Hampshire except: o Arable o Improved Grassland o Coniferous woodland o Urban The maps show that Hampshire’s priority habitats such as calcareous grassland are fragmented and small in area compared to agricultural and urban land uses, but that these fragments correspond to the familiar landscapes in the district such as chalk downland. Other habitat types, such as the mosaic of Wealden heathland and acidic grasslands in the north-east of the area, are larger and in closer proximity to each other. -
