  • Brumby Named As Chair of International Education Body
    Wednesday, 17 February 2021 BRUMBY NAMED AS CHAIR OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION BODY Minister for Trade Martin Pakula today announced the appointment of former Victorian Premier John Brumby as the new Chair of the state’s International Education Advisory Council. Mr Brumby brings extensive education sector experience to the role as Chancellor of La Trobe University and Chair of the Advisory Board for the University of Melbourne School of Government. He will lead the Council in providing independent advice on issues relating to Victoria’s renowned international education sector. Minister Pakula thanked the outgoing Chair, Jane den Hollander AO, for her service to the Victorian international education sector and the community. The International Education Advisory Council comprises industry representatives and provides advice to the Government to help Victoria maintain its standing as a destination of choice for international students. The Andrews Labor Government is working closely with education providers and the Australian Government to welcome international students back to Victoria when it is safe to do so. The current Budget provides $33.4 million to lay the foundation for a strong recovery for the sector. When restrictions were introduced to slow the spread of coronavirus, the Labor Government responded quickly to support students and the sector. Support has been provided through the $45 million International Student Emergency Relief Fund, the $50 million Emergency Hardship Support Program, the $350 million Victorian Higher Education State Investment Fund and a $260 million TAFE funding package. New International Education Advisory Council members will be announced on the Study Melbourne website (studymelbourne.vic.gov.au) as they are appointed.

    Victorian Premier Brumby Announces Plans to Build World’s Largest Life Sciences Supercomputer Facility during Visit to SDSC $100 Million Supercomputer Will Aid Breakthrough in Disease Discovery in Australia and Beyond June 17, 2008 Jan Zverina Australia's Victorian Premier John Brumby today announced a $100 million (AUD) initiative to build the world's largest life sciences supercomputer facility to assist in discovering cures and therapies for such life-threatening diseases such as cancer, brain disorders and 'flu pandemics. In making the announcement at the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego, Premier Brumby said the Victorian government is investing $50 million in the supercomputer facility, complementing University of Melbourne and other funding of an additional $50 million to establish the Victorian Life Sciences Computation initiative at the University's Parkville Precinct. The University of Melbourne will release initial expressions of interest for the peak computing facility later this year, with major installations planned for 2009 and 2011. "I am delighted to make this important announcement here at the University of California, San Diego," Brumby said, adding that the Victorian government is looking forward to collaborating with the San Diego Supercomputer Center and other UC San Diego research units in advancing disease research through high-performance computing. ""If you want the very best in cancer diagnosis, and want the very best in cancer treatment, you need a supercomputer," said Brumby, adding that the Australian government has seen an "explosion" in the level of brain diseases such as Alzheimer's, and that the country must be able to better anticipate and treat 'flu pandemics.

In commemoration of this major occasion, we decided to commission a history of the 150 years of the Office and appointed Dr Peter Yule, to carry out this task. The product of the work of Peter Yule is a highly informative account of the Office over the 150 year period. Peter has skilfully analysed the personalities and key events that have characterised the functioning of the Office and indeed much of the Victorian public sector over the years. His book will be fascinating reading to anyone interested in the development of public accountability in this State and of the forces of change that have progressively impacted on the powers and responsibilities of Auditors-General. Peter Yule was ably assisted by Geoff Burrows (Associate Professor in Accounting, University of Melbourne) who, together with Graham Hamilton (former Deputy Auditor- General), provided quality external advice during the course of the project.

    ANNUAL REPORT The Sovereign Hill Museums association 17. 18 s you open this Annual Report, you will notice that it looks a little different to Athose you have previously enjoyed! The difference lies largely in the images, which reflect our new branding – 'The Story Lives On'. Dark and sombre – almost gritty – they suggest that goldfields life was not always glamorous or even easy. Thousands of hopeful diggers arrived in Ballarat, but fortune eluded many. Their dreams were dashed by hardship and misery. Sovereign Hill's new 'Story' was developed in collaboration with Town Square, a Melbourne- based creative agency. Filmed at Sovereign Hill, using staff and volunteers as cast, three individual stories have so far been introduced into our online and media presence. In 'The Struggle', a miner battles to support a young family in the dangerous days leading up to the Eureka Uprising. 'The Nugget' shows a young woman, frightened and alone, searching for the gold that will transform her life, while 'The Bounty' is a happier tale, following excited children as they race home clutching a bag of boiled sweets – a rare and expensive treat indeed.     Tough Mullett takes aim Hedley Thomas | From: The Australian | May 08, 2010 12:00AM Former Victoria Police union chief Paul Mullett says he was a political target PAUL Mullett believes he has been set up for political reasons. It cost him his job, his reputation and could have sent him to prison. Now he has nothing to lose, he may be more politically dangerous than ever. His challenge to the Brumby government is simple: if there is nothing to hide, no official corruption to be concerned about, no improper agendas, then launch an open inquiry into all of the unusual circumstances surrounding covert investigations that snared Mullett and former assistant commissioner Noel Ashby in 2007. Both men and their lawyers are pulling apart a spider's web of political intrigue, the allegedly corrupt conduct of the Office of Police Integrity, and the motives of their detractors in having them criminally prosecuted. "My allegations are that senior people in the Victoria Police and the OPI have abused the criminal justice system to seek a politically motivated outcome," says Mullett. The OPI has returned fire with a spirited defence of the conduct of its employees. Its director, Michael Strong, strongly rejects the serious allegations made by Mullett, Ashby, the Police Association Victoria and a leading Melbourne barrister Phillip Priest QC (who described the OPI's conduct as "corrupt"). Any examination of the events that culminated in the failed prosecutions must also look at the political environment that produced the outcome, according to Mullett. It is why he starts his story in 1999, when a targeted and damaging industrial campaign by the Police Association was a significant factor in a seismic shift in Victorian politics.
