Enjoy a complimentary Afternoon Tea on arrival. Day 2: Around Dolgellau Option 1 - Dolgellau And Glyn Arran Distance: 7 miles (11½km) Ascent: 1,100 ft (340m) In Summary: Leaving the House, we walk up the Afon Clywedog , then on quiet lanes and footpaths to descend the Arran valley to Dolgellau. We return to the house on quiet lanes on the other side of the valley. Highlight: The beautiful Torrent Walk alongside the Afon Clywedog, and an opportunity to explore the historic town of Dolgellau. Option 2 - Cymer Abbey, Dolgellau And Glyn Arran Distance: 10 miles (16½km) Ascent: 1,450 ft (440m) In Summary: We walk west along quiet lanes to the site of Cymer Abbey, and into Dolgellau. Leaving Dolgellau, we climb up the Arran valley, and on footpaths and quiet lanes to descend the Clywedog valley to the House Highlight: A visit to Cymer Abbey, an opportunity to explore historic Dolgellau, and the beautiful Torrent Walk alongside the Afon Clywedog Option 3 - New Precipice Walk And Dolgellau Distance: 12 miles (19km) Ascent: 1,950 feet (580m) In Summary: We walk on quiet lanes down the Mawddach valley to the village of Llanelltyd then climb through woods to the balcony New Precipice Walk, passing abandoned gold mines. Day 3: Brithdir And Torrent Walk Option 1 - Foel Caerynwch And Torrent Walk Distance: 6 miles (9½km) Ascent: 1,200 feet (360m) In Summary: A circular walk from the house, we start by walking through the tranquil woods behind the house crossing streams and fields reaching Brithdir. We then ascend up to the summit of Foel Caerynwch where you can take some time to enjoy the views. Following that, we will descend to reach the very interesting St Mark's Church before walking along the river back to the house. Highlight: Short and easy summit walk with great views at the top and a visit to St Mark's Church. Option 2 - Roman Road, Foel Caerynwch And Torrent Walk Distance: 7½ miles (12km) Ascent: 1,500 feet (480m) In Summary: Leaving the House, we climb gradually through woods to reach a Roman road, then across open moorland to the summit of Foel Caerynwch. We then descend to the road, passing St Marks Church, and descending the Torrent Walk to the House. Highlight: Roman road, views of the Mawddach Valley and Cader Idris, the Art Nouveau St Marks Church Option 3 - Waun Oer Distance: 12½ miles (20km) Ascent: 3,000 feet (880m) In Summary: We explore the seldom visited Dyfi Hills at the southern extremity of the Snowdonia National Park. Walking steadily uphill through woods and on lanes, we cross open moorland before climbing up to the ridge and over the summits of Waun Oer and Mynydd Ceiswyn. Descending from the ridge, we pass through a SSSI noted for its orchids, and the Torrent Walk back to the house. Highlight: An old coach road across open moorland, an interesting disused slate quarry, stunning views of Cader Idris, the Dyfi Hills and Dyfi Forest, and (in season) possibly finding orchids. Matchless Country House Accommodation Accommodation Info Need To Know Important Covid-19 Steps We Have Taken For Guest Safety: Please Read Following the relaxation in government guidance on 19 July, we are continuing to take extra steps to keep our guests leaders, and staff safe in our HF country houses. We ask all our guests to respect the measures put in place. The English, Scottish and Welsh governments are not in sync, so measures in our country houses will vary between the nations. With the relaxation of social distancing in England, from 19 July we will be allowing larger groups to dine and relax in the bar together. However, we will still give guests space e.g. we will seat 6 people at a table where pre-pandemic we may have seated 8. We will ensure our public rooms are well ventilated by opening doors and windows wherever possible. If you have any concerns about distancing, please speak to the House Manager. The government recommendation for England is to wear face coverings in crowded areas. You must wear a face covering by law in public areas in hotels in Scotland. This is mandatory in public spaces; however, face coverings will not be required whilst eating and drinking in the restaurant and bar areas or whilst you are outside our houses. In Wales face coverings will remain a legal requirement indoors, with the exception of hospitality premises. As a temporary measure, we will not be servicing rooms during a stay. Extra tea, coffee, milk, and toiletries will be made available on request for all guests. It is recommended that guests bring their own toiletries for the duration of their stay. We will though be increasing the frequency of cleaning in our public areas providing particular attention to frequently touched items including door handles and handrails. Menus for the week will be available in your room on arrival. A self-service breakfast will be served from 7.45am – 9am. Picnic lunches will now be pre-ordered the night before from an order form in the room. Evening meals will be table service. A dinner order form will be available in each room for completion. Dinner is served at either 7.15pm or 7.30pm. Please check at the house for details. The bar will be open. We will be offering a table service but guests can also come to the bar to order (depending on local restrictions). Join our team after dinner on Wednesday evenings for the HF Big Pub Quiz. There will be one other evening of entertainment at the start of the week, which will vary depending on the country house that you are staying at. Our Walk Leaders will also be on hand in the bar or lounge for individual or small group walks talks briefings, which allow guests to talk through the following day’s walk options and ask any questions. All of our swimming pools are open, except for Glen Coe, which will not re-open this year. Swimming Pools will be operated in line with maximum capacities.     Hidden possibilities Possible uses of hillforts in southern Gwynedd, north-west Wales Master thesis Karolina Saxerbo Sjöberg Uppsala University 2014 Department of archaeology and ancient history Mentors: Frands Herschend & Anders Kaliff Second mentor: Toby Driver Abstract Hidden possibilities – Possible uses of hillforts in southern Gwynedd, north-west Wales, Dolda möjligheter – Möjliga användningar av fornborgar i södra Gwynedd, nordvästra Wales. Only one of the hillforts of southern Gwynedd has been submitted to a small excavation, and the forts in this study are quite forgotten in the larger British hillfort research. This thesis explores the forts’ possible uses through an analysis of their landscape setting, accessibility and view, architecture, internal features and archaeological setting. The result of the analysis show a variety of uses , for example related to occupation, trade, exchange or communication, agriculture and pastoralism, defence, religion and ritual. In addition, some larger patterns, connections and pairings of forts also come to light. Hopefully this study will lead to a heightened interest in, and future studies and excavations of the forts of southern Gwynedd. Keywords: Hillfort, GIS, hillfort uses, north-western Wales, possibilities, landscape context, isolation, accessibility, architecture, archaeological context. 2 Preface My interest for hillforts in this area and their uses is the result of a lifelong curiosity of the Iron Age people of Wales and their religion. That was the subject of my bachelor thesis, and I wanted to continue along the same lines here. For this reason, I directed my focus to hillforts –which in some cases are known for to having had religious or ritual uses. After choosing the area of southern Gwynedd, mostly because its archaeology is quite forgotten, it became clear that it was necessary to begin with a study of all the possible uses of the forts.

Page Crags of the Southern Rhinogydd Copyright © 2019 Steep Stone™ - All Rights Reserved The Rhinogydd The Rhinogydd are a range of mountains located in Central Snowdonia, south of the Afon Dwyryd, east of Harlech, west of the A470 and north of the Afon Mawddach. Rhinogydd is the Welsh plural form of Rhinog, which means ‘threshold’. It is thought that the use of Rhinogydd derives from the names of two of the higher peaks in the range, namely Rhinog Fawr and Rhinog Fach. The Rhinogydd are notably rocky towards the central and northern end of the range, especially around Rhinog Fawr, Rhinog Fach and Moel Ysgyfarnogod. This area is littered with boulders, outcrops and large cliffs, all composed of perfect gritstone. The southern end of the range around Y Llethr and Diffwys has a softer, more rounded character, but this does not mean that there is an absence of climbable rock.

    SEASCAPE CHARACTER AREA 21: DWYRYD ESTUARY AND MORFA HARLECH Component LCAs (Snowdonia): Morfa Harlech; Vale of Ffestiniog; Morfa Dyffryn Component LCAs (Gwynedd): Porthmadog Location and Context This SCA is located in the northern part of the west Snowdonia coast. It includes the Dwyryd estuary from its mouth near Porthmadog to its inland tidal limit at Tan-y-bwlch. It also includes Morfa Harlech on the southern shore of the estuary, and the towns of Harlech and Penrhyndeudraeth. To the north is SCA 20: Porthmadog and Glaslyn Estuary, to the west is SCA 19: Criccieth to Mochras, and to the south is SCA 22: Mochras to Fairbourne and Sarn Badrig. Image © Fiona Fyfe Summary Description Views of this SCA are dominated by the broad landform of the Dwyryd estuary, with its extensive salt marshes, sand, mud and dune system (Morfa Harlech). The estuary also contains distinctive ‘islands’ and ridges of higher ground on either side. Overlooking the estuary are the contrasting villages of Harlech (with its Medieval castle on the valley side), Portmeirion with its Italianate architecture, and the industrial village of Penrhyndeudraeth. Surrounding the estuary are the wooded hills of Snowdonia, which form a majestic backdrop to picturesque views from lower land. In the eastern part of SCA, the valley narrows as the river flows inland. Here, the Afon Dwyryd has been heavily modified flows between areas of improved grazing, with main roads on both sides of the valley floor.

Yn y ddarlith bydd John yn codi cwr y llen ar ddaeareg Eryri, gan edrych nid yn unig ar natur y creigiau, a’r ffraeo enbyd rhwng y daearegwyr cynnar, ond am sut mae’r tirwedd wedi effeithio ar ein hanes cymdeithasol, amaethyddiaeth, ffiniau gwleidyddol, amddiffynfeydd hanesyddol, patrwm ffyrdd a llwybrau a’n diwylliant fel Cymry. Obtaining broodstock for the Mawddach Hatchery ii. Stocking out of juveniles from the Mawddach Hatchery iii. Active participation and partnership working in both habitat improvement schemes and the management of invasives. iv. Water Framework Directive (WFD) Meirionydd Catchment Plan element of the Western Wales River Basin Management Plan. Although I am a visiting angler, I present my evidence with the full backing and support of the 2 major angling clubs and vast majority of riparian owners on the Afon Mawddach & Afon Wnion in the Dolgellau area. August September Wnion Dee River Flows have a significant impact on Migration Patterns – however there can be considerable variations between catchments Extracts from a document sent to NRW staff - November 2014 On 11th May both the Mawddach and Wnion were flowing at the top of their banks. This was to be the last major rise of water until 6th October! On 23rd June Lampreys were observed spawning immediately above Llanelltyd Bridge. This has been a regular event during recent seasons and, given the life cycle of the lamprey, would seem to indicate that there is little wrong with the water quality.

    Chapter 8: Using graphs and diagrams 185 8 Using graphs and diagrams Numeracy extends beyond simply using mathematical techniques, and includes the interpretation of quantitative data in a real world context, problem solving, and the communication of results in a form useful for decision making. It is now easy to collect huge quantities of data, particularly with the widespread use of computers in all areas of society. For example, many different readings may be made at frequent time intervals at hundreds of weather stations, or sales data may be collected for thousands of different products in different shops. Graphs and diagrams are often necessary when interpreting large quantities of data, so that patterns or trends can be identified. Graphs and diagrams in critical thinking Critical thinking is the ability to analyse arguments, perhaps presented by people with widely differing views. Quantitative data can provide an important resource when developing a convincing logical argument. Evidence may already exist in the form of graphs or diagrams, or data in a numerical format may first need to be plotted as graphs or diagrams to help in its interpretation. When researching an issue, it is important to obtain data which is reliable. Various guiding principles can help in this process. We might be more confident in using data which is: corroborated by more than one source, for example when most scientists or economists believe that a particular result is correct obtained from a source with a good reputation for accuracy, such as a university or the BBC. collected by persons who have had first-hand access to events or original documents, rather than simply reporting information provided by other people.
