In June 1979 Mr. K. Kerenga, Lae, Papua New Guinea, visited the summit of Mt, Michael, ca. 3750 m high. Among his collections was a curious grass (LAE 74443), .said to cover large areas by sprawling, which has turned out to be Aegopogon cenchroides Willd. var. cenchroides. Neither the species, not the genus was so far known from Malesia, and as I think existing descriptions may not always be within reach of Malesian botanists a short generico-specific description is given here based on the New Guinea collection. The plant is especially conspicuous for the one-sided panicle with paired, much-bristled spikelets that drop off as small burs. The genus of three species is restricted to subtropical America, while our species occurs from Northern Mexico to Bolivia and Venezuela. This distribution would seem to make introduction hardly likely on a mountain only rarely visited by local people and even less outsiders. The latter would be mainly Australian, but the genus has not yet been reported from that continent (Simon in Techn. Bull. Bot. Br. Dept. Prim. Industr., Brisbane 3: 1—89. -

This is the second largest family in the flora area after Asteraceae. A total of 97 taxa in 46 genera of grasses are included in this publication, which includes ones established and reproducing in the modern flora (86 taxa in 43 genera), some occurring at the margins of the flora area or no long known from the area, and ice age fossils. At least 28 taxa are known by fossils recovered from packrat middens, five of which have not been found in the modern flora: little barley ( Hordeum pusillum ), cliff muhly ( Muhlenbergia polycaulis ), Paspalum sp., mutton bluegrass ( Poa fendleriana ), and bulb panic grass ( Zuloagaea bulbosa ). Non-native grasses are represented by 27 species, or 28% of the modern grass flora. -

Se analizan diversos aspectos relativos a la clasificación, la nomenclatura y la variación morfológica de los caracteres. El género Muhlenbergia está representado en Colombia por 14 especies. Las especies Aegopogon bryophilus Döll, Aegopogon cenchroides Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd., Lycurus phalaroides Kunth y Pereilema crinitum J. Presl se transfi eren al género Muhlenbergia. El binomio Muhlenbergia cleefi i Lægaard se reduce a la sinonimia de Muhlenbergia fastigiata (J. Presl) Henrard. Las especies Muhlenbergia beyrichiana Kunth, Muhlenbergia ciliata (Kunth) Trin. y Muhlenbergia nigra Hitchc. se excluyen de la fl ora de Colombia. Se presentan las claves para reconocer las especies presentes en Colombia, así como también las descripciones de éstas, sus sinónimos, la distribución geográfi ca, se comentan algunas observaciones morfológicas y ecológicas, los usos y los números cromosómicos. A provisional ecological site description has undergone quality control and quality assurance review. It contains a working state and transition model and enough information to identify the ecological site. Figure 1. Mapped extent Areas shown in blue indicate the maximum mapped extent of this ecological site. Other ecological sites likely occur within the highlighted areas. It is also possible for this ecological site to occur outside of highlighted areas if detailed soil survey has not been completed or recently updated. MLRA notes Major Land Resource Area (MLRA): 040X–Sonoran Basin and Range AZ 40.1 – Upper Sonoran Desert Elevations range from 2000 to 3200 feet and precipitation averages 10 to 13 inches per year. Vegetation includes saguaro, palo verde, mesquite, creosotebush, triangle bursage, prickly pear, cholla, limberbush, wolfberry, bush muhly, threeawns, ocotillo, and globe mallow. The soil temperature regime is thermic and the soil moisture regime is typic aridic. This unit occurs within the Basin and Range Physiographic Province and is characterized by numerous mountain ranges that rise abruptly from broad, plain-like valleys and basins. Igneous and metamorphic rock classes dominate the mountain ranges and sediments filling the basins represent combinations of fluvial, lacustrine, colluvial and alluvial deposits. ‘Hachita’ blue grama Bouteloua gracilis (Willd. ex Kunth) Lag. ex Griffiths A Conservation Plant Release by USDA NRCS Los Lunas Plant Materials Center Conservation Uses Hachita blue grama is a good ground cover and provides valuable protection from soil erosion. Because Hachita blue grama is more drought resistant than other varieties of blue grama, it is well-suited for rangeland improvement, mine-spoil reclamation, and roadside stabilization in the semiarid Southwest. It makes excellent pasture or lawngrass. It requires less water than traditional turfgrasses. Area of Adaptation and Use Blue grama is widely-distributed throughout the Americas. It is found at elevations of 1,000 to 7,000 feet from Canada, south through Mexico and into South America. Hachita blue grama is climatically adapted to areas of southeastern Utah, northeastern Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas and the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma, where blue grama is recommended at elevations of 3,000 to 7,500 feet. ■ . ~+j-,r?7-w- - i i - . \ t MEXICAN GRASSES IN THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL HERBARIUM. By A. S, Hitchcock INTRODUCTION. The following list of grasses, based entirely upon specimens in the United States National Herbarium, is a preliminary paper, in which the scattered data upon Mexican grasses have been brought together and arranged in a convenient form. The species included have been accepted, for the most part, in their traditional sense. It has been impracticable to examine the types of many of the earlier described species since these specimens are located in European herbaria. For this reason the synonymy has been confined mostly to those names that could be fixed by an examination of American types, or concerning the application of which there was little doubt. The largest number of unidentified names are found in Fournier's work on Mexican grasses.1 This results from the incomplete or unsatis- factory descriptions and from the fact that the specimens cited under a given species either may not agree with the diagnosis, or may belong to two or more species, at least in different herbaria. An examination of the original specimens will undoubtedly lead to the identification of the greater part of these names. There are several specimens that have been omitted from the list because they have not been identified and are apparently unde- scribed species. They belong to genera, however, that are much in need of critical revision and further study of them is deferred for the present. In subsequent articles it is hoped to work out the classifi- cation of the tropical American grasses upon a type basis KEY TO THE GENEBA. -

Contributed by: USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service Description Tucson Plant Materials Center Bouteloua eriopoda (Torr.) is a native warm season perennial grass. It grows from 10 to 28 inches (25 to Alternate Names 71 cm), depending upon grazing strategy. Black woollyfoot grama grama grows from a hard base that becomes hairyfoot stoloniferous at the lower nodes. With limited navajita negra grazing it forms uneven stands of large tufts. In some crowfoot grama areas it is sod forming and may grow in almost pure stands. On sites that are extremely dry black grama exhibits the characteristics of a non sodforming bunch grass. Adaptation Black grama is a major grass of arid and semiarid grasslands in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. It is distributed throughout desert grasslands on dry, rocky hills, uplands and grasslands and is frequently found on sandy dunes. It does poorly and is short lived when planted in heavy soils. Treinta y tres salidas de campo se hicieron de 2007 a 2008 y se consultaron y revisaron bases de datos de herbarios. Se registraron 1,298 especies, 632 géneros, 135 familias y 58 infraespecies. Las familias más representativas corresponden a Fabaceae (126 especies y 52 géneros) y Asteraceae (107 especies y 65 géneros). Los géneros más diversos fueron Ipomoea (18), Tillandsia (17) y Peperomia (16). Además, 625 especies se clasificaron como hierbas y 1,179 especies como autótrofas.
