any people are wondering what exciting new boats will be on display at the Toronto International Boat M Show this January. Well, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show was held before Christmas and our team was there to check it out. It was a special year, too. Who would have imagined in 1959 – back when Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley were popular on AM radio – what the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show would look like 50 control at the helm and experienced how precise and easy years downstream? it is to move around a sport yacht with the length of 45’6” The show’s beginnings were humble, with a mere 47 boats and a 13’11” width, even in very tight locations like the on display; 29 were in water and 18 were on land. This year, celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Fort www.searay.com Lauderdale International Boat Show featured 1,200 exhibitors along with 1,000 boats, both on water and on land. REGAL 5260 This year, as we traversed the aisles and the five miles of docks, the big buzz was about new yachts from Sea Ray, Regal, Rinker, Four Winns and MasterCraft (yes, MasterCraft) among the power boats. We also know that new sailing yachts from Beneteau, Jeanneau, Catalina, Delphia and Hunter will be showing their latest models at the Toronto show in January. Here are some of the boats to look for.

For a relatively smaller www.regalboats.com cruiser, the Rinker 310 feels big and roomy, especially for its size classification. FOUR WINNS V408 The 310 features a pair of 5.0L MerCruiser stern drives with an option for Axius addition. Like the Zeus system, Axius gives joy stick control to the driver. Through a computer, Axius directs the outdrives of twin MerCruiser engines to provide the driver a desired direction, a real advantage in tight, crowded marinas. The system eliminates the added work and guessing of throttling each engine independently. In the future, don’t be surprised to see Cummins MerCruiser diesel engines with Axius as an option on cruisers like the Rinker 310. This is becoming popular in Europe. ENGINE ROOM By Paul Wohlrab Oil Changes for Larger 4-Stroke Outboards Just Became a DIY Project

THOSE BEAUTIFUL new 4-stroke out - boards behind you are a wonderful power plant. Smooth and quiet, powerful and quick, they’ve come a long way from the “old smokies” that thumped along a few decades back. However, as the 4- stroke outboards have evolved, their maintenance has become something many owners feel may be too complicat - ed, or just plain difficult to attempt. Most owners simply drop off the boat at the yard for a haul-out or call “the guy” when the scheduled oil change is due. Until now, the only other alternative was hand pumping the oil out, risking This is the GP 311 PW system, complete with gear pump, costly spills, and spending a perfectly hoses, hardware and electrical connection.

Radar is a device which measures not only the time it takes for a pulsed signal to be reflected back from an object, but also that object’s bearing relative to your position. No other piece of marine electronics can give you as much information about objects around you as radar. Radar is the ultimate anti-collision aid, but it also provides information about the location of neighboring ves - sels, coastal outlines, channel markers and objects in the water. The better X-band systems have the range to track a weather front that may be approaching and be able to track it. If you navigate in fog or darkness, you can lose “situational awareness” around your own boat because of poor, or no vis - ibility. With radar acting as your eyes how - ever, you have the ability to monitor your ZZZED\SRUW\FFRP surroundings and the movement of other vessels. Most units have a guard alarm fea - ture that alerts you when targets enter a particular zone that you have defined. You can also split the on-screen display so that you can view the map and the standard radar page simultaneously. Just remember when shopping these systems that most are proprietary, so if you have Furuno on your bridge now, you stay with Furuno as you add or upgrade your equipment. The same is true for Raymarine, Garmin and the Navico lines. NMEA 2000 add-on devices are not proprietary and will work on each of these systems. Check out the many systems at the shows and get ready to make a quantum leap ahead in safety and convenience with a new radar system this summer!

what we should be doing, and do that very well.” The final word goes to Frank Denis. As Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Yachting Association, he’s a CYA stake - holder. But he also has to protect the interests of his members. Was attending the conference and AGM worthwhile? “Yes, even if just for a renewed sense of optimism with the CYA. I’m very confi - dent that the CYA is going in the right direction. With the people that CYA has on staff and on its board, it’s a win-win for all of us.” For the CYA’s report on the AGM and conference, go to www.sailing.ca.

1 For 2008/09, the CYA reported its first surplus since 2002: $110,012. Just one year earlier, the deficit was $209,258.
