264 REVIEWS Beal, Sophia. Brazil Under Construction
REVIEWS Beal, Sophia. Brazil under Construction: Fiction and Public Works. New York: Palgrave MacMillan, 2013. 198 pp. ISBN 978-1-137-3247-0. Sophia Beal’s Introduction situates her line of investigation in the context of “cultural studies, new historicism, and postcolonial studies” (2). She maintains that once the Brazilian Empire (1822-1888) gave way to the Republic, the élite sought a new identity for Brazil, and their building of “connective” public works (e.g. water works, electricity, roads, highways, bridges, dams, and power lines) was an essential part of this effort. Beal considers these endeavors public insofar as they are government sponsored or endorsed and because they were undertaken, purportedly, to benefit the populace. But they “often have had the opposite effect” (3), which much of the literary work she examines points out. Concerning Brazilian literature, Beal accepts Antônio Cândido’s libel that “Latin American writers [before 1925] had copied […] styles […] passé in Europe [… creating much] mediocre literature” (13), which achieved no purchase abroad. She maintains that soccer, bossa nova, concrete poetry, and Brasília have achieved international stardom for Brazil. However, as Beal herself admits, “concrete poetry and Brasília appropriated European traditions” (16). Likewise, soccer and bossa nova are hardly autochthonous. Indeed, bossa nova began as a middle-class melding of 1950s progressive jazz with samba, hence its exportability. Likewise, it was the Brazilian style of and expertise in soccer that achieved international renown. In Chapter 2, “Conquering the Dark: Literature, Lighting, and Public Space in Rio de Janeiro in the Early 1900s,” Beal notes that in the Republic’s early days, its capital, Rio de Janeiro, seemed a pestilent backwater compared to either Montevideo or Buenos Aires. -

ADRIEN NIYONSHUTI CYCLING ACADEMY (ANCA) +39 328 401 2712 +250 783 674 945 www.acyclingacademy.org [email protected] Twitter Facebook Instagram Rwamagana, Rwanda 2025 ANCA PLAN ]\ Introduction We are the Adrien Niyonshuti Cycling Academy and proud educators of young cyclists in Rwanda. Adrien was the first Rwandan professional cyclist and now willing to help the youngsters in his country to give them the opportunity he was given, like riding at the Olympics in 2012. Therefore he started the Academy and over the last six years we have helped dozens of kids to enjoy and perform in cycling at every level. This plan describes how we want to get to the next level of training our future generation of cyclists in Rwanda. “I achieved much in the cycling world because someone somewhere gave me a helping hand.” Adrien Niyonshuti Our Vision 2025 The ANCA is committed to raise the future generation of Rwandan cyclists. We want to educate riders, both girls and boys, so they will be able to compete at the highest level in Rwanda and abroad. And to help them to grow to the continental level of cycling in five years with our team. In 2025 we will have girls and boys from our academy competing in the UCI World Championships which hopefully will be held in our country. In five years we will grow from an academy of 10 riders now to 25 riders in 25. “25 in 25!” The academy will be self sufficient in five years by building our cycling tourism company that creates employment for our (former) riders. -
Beyond Motherhood
BEYOND MOTHERHOOD: UKRAINIAN FEMALE LABOR MIGRATION TO ITALY By Olena Fedyuk Submitted to Central European University Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisors: Professor Ayúe Ça÷lar Professor Prem Kumar Rajaram CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2011 Statement I hereby state that the thesis contains no materials accepted for any other degrees in any other institutions. The thesis contains no materials previously written and/or published by another person, except where appropriate acknowledgment is made in the form of bibliographical reference. Budapest, May 31, 2011 CEU eTD Collection 2 Abstract Conceptualizing contemporary labor migration from Ukraine as a form of transnational, cross- generational familial project, this dissertation looks into the shifting practices of Ukrainian women’s migration to Italy and asks what kinds of ruptures, coping mechanisms and continuities were triggered and emerged in response to this transnational, feminized migration. Drawing on the fieldwork conducted among Ukrainian care- and domestic workers in Bologna and Naples, my research has indicated the centrality of motherhood in such familial migration projects led by women. To bring out dynamic role of motherhood in imagining, strategizing and carrying migration I introduce an analytical distinction between motherhood as a trope and motherhood as a situational practice. Such distinction between the two allows me to address the very mechanism of justifying, making sense of and dealing with the unequally distributed responsibilities within migrants transnational social fields, and to capture the emotion work and negotiations that shape these fields and the power struggles within them. -

This is a story about hope, about the future, about changes and opportunities! We measure our success by the number of lives that we managed to change. Every day, communities around the world surmount hurdles and face challenges that cannot be ignored, such as poverty, inequality, lack of access to education. And now, more than ever, people need support and hope. We work to make changes, so that everyone has the opportunity for decent life. We work so that every child has a solid start for development of their talents. We fight for people to have access to medicine, healthy food and good physical shape. Every day we strive to create lasting and positive changes in society. However, we are not able to do this on our own. Thanks to the generous support from our charity givers, partners and leaders we are able to help others move forward.
