Scripted with a high emphasis on character development by novelist Meltzer Identity Crisisthe story has the feeling of a fresh start, even if its climax falls somewhat flat. The main arc is an affecting one, following the efforts of the Red Tornado—who's starting to get annoyed with having died so many times—to get back into his android body, or failing that, a mortal one so that he can be reunited with his beloved Kathy and adopted son. This ties in with scattered skirmishes between a JLA squad and a mob of evil Tornado clones. The series starts off stiffly, piling in a lot of exposition between cutting back to the JLA leaders' membership quarrels and crowding the story with a league of minor characters It's best seen as a competent new kickoff for the series rather than a stand-alone graphic novel. Aug 22, James DeSantis rated it really liked it. I really like Brad Meltzer writing. So then this is like the follow-up and once again I believe Brad creatures believable dialog with strong character motives. He also has the ability to give B list and C list characters depth that makes you care about them. This story mostly focuses on Justice League rebuilding. Batman, Supes, and Wonder are all just chilling talking about recruiting. As they're doing that we see Red Tornado dealing with his switch into a real human body. It's touching and the time we get to the part with his family rejoicing over his new body you have the emotions you need to get attached. Then of course, without spoilers, shit goes down. The art is very good and no complaints from me. Justice League of America: Tornados Path Volume 1 Tornado's story is both filled with hope and sadness. Loved every moment with him. The ending is touching and sweet yet you still feel that the risk these characters go through is very very scary. What I didn't like: Okay, to be honest, the Justice League of America: Tornados Path Volume 1 Vex storyline and black lighting were kind of boring. Overall this is another solid comic by Meltzer. So sad that this is about all he's done in the comic realm. I'd love to read more from him. Well least he made two great DC comics I'll always remember fondly of. View all 3 comments. Dec 29, Bookwraiths rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic- novelsgraphic-novels-dce-books. This follow-up to Identity Crisis was a good read. Brad Meltzer concocting an entertaining story with Ed Benes providing some amazing artwork. I can't say I've ever been a huge fan of Red Tornado, but now I actually like him and his whole story. Of course, it probably isn't the current DC Canon anymore. Damn, does Brad Justice League of America: Tornados Path Volume 1 know how to write a great comic or what? What impressed me most was Meltzer's handling of the individual characters and the way he eventually brought them together as a team. The themes of family and friendship connect the various storylines, centred around Red Tornado's desire to become Justice League of America: Tornados Path Volume 1 human. In addition to a brief, direct reference to Identity Crisis I felt there were subtle tou Damn, does Brad Meltzer know how to write a great comic or what? In addition to Justice League of America: Tornados Path Volume 1 brief, direct reference to Identity Crisis I felt there were subtle touches in the storytelling that suggested this was going to be another engrossing narrative. There were numerous highlights, from Black Canary's powerful display to the Trinity voting on new members for the League. The latter was a simple, yet effective way to show their presence while the bigger story began to build around them. The big bad is view spoiler [Solomon Grundy hide spoiler ] as you've never seen him before and he had a great exchange with Arsenal who has a great journey in this book that put a smile on my face. The simultaneous battles with view spoiler [Amazo and Grundy hide spoiler ] were both tense, but one was exciting and the other, heartbreaking. It made for an incredible rollercoaster ride switching back and forth between the two conflicts. Only the pages with Geo-Force let the book down. Meltzer was clearly setting something up for another volume, but his random appearances wound up being a minor distraction. Speaking of distractions, Ed Benes certainly knows how to catch the eye with his renditions of the DC heroes. The women are powerful and sexy, the men are incredibly muscular and the main villains are every bit as imposing as they should be. The Tornado's Path wouldn't work if Benes hadn't captured the all-important emotions though, and he hits the nail on the head each time. Meltzer writes one hell of a story, while Benes with inker Sandra Hope and colourist Alex Sinclair bring it to life. This was a great creative team delivering on all fronts and i'll Justice League of America: Tornados Path Volume 1 be looking for more of Meltzer's graphic novels in future. Highly recommended. • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.
