  • I Was So Much Older Then, I Am Younger Than That
MONDAY MULLIGAN "I WAS SO MUCH OLDER THEN, I’M YOUNGER THAN THAT NOW" By Ron Sirak • @ronsirak Sept. 19, 2016 Anyone old enough to remember the ‘60s, or curious enough to study history, especially that of music, will recognize those words as the work of Bob Dylan from his 1964 song My Back Pages. What he was saying was that he used to live in a world of limitations created by over-simplified ideas. But as he got older he came to appreciate the unlimited possibilities of imagination. We may be on the verge of re-imagining what is possible in golf. Recently, Jim Furyk shot the first 58 on the PGA Tour. And over the weekend, In Gee Chun broke the major-championship scoring record in relation to par for men and women at Evian by finishing at 21 under par. Are they the Roger Bannister of golf? After the Englishman broke the 4-minute mile in 1954 the floodgates in running opened. The unbreakable barrier was broken again and again and now the world record is 3 minutes and 43 seconds. Will we now see scoring records in golf go lower and lower? My friends Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson teach VISION54. That’s the peak- performance approach to the game that makes the goal not a par on every hole, but a birdie – a 54 on a par-72 course. It’s all about imagining the impossible and making it your reality. Furyk and Chun have redefined what’s possible. One of the many things I love about sports is that it speeds up the time frame of human existence and tears down the walls restricting imagination.

  • Our Part in Four-Minute Mile History
Our part in four-minute mile history Bruce McAvaney addressed a dinner in Melbourne recently, to commemorate Australian John Landy's first sub-four-minute mile and world record, run 50 years ago, six weeks after Roger Bannister first went under four. This is the transcript of his speech. "Here is the result of event No.9, the one mile: No. 41, R G Bannister, of the Amateur Athletic Association and formerly of Exeter and Merton Colleges, with a time that is a new meeting and track record, and which, subject to ratification, with be a new English native, British National, British all-comers, European, British Empire and World Record. The time is 3…." That's arguably the most famous cue, let alone understated announcement in athletics history…3 Minutes, 59.4 seconds! He was a formidable character, the announcer. Norris McWhirter died earlier this year, unfortunately just before the 50th anniversary of the first sub-four minute mile. McWhirter apparently had rehearsed assiduously the night before, in his bath, and it was through him that the BBC, the newsreel camera and most of the print media were present that day. McWhirter, and his twin Ross, who was gunned down in 1975 by the IRA, were joint founders and editors of the Guinness Book of Records. McWhirter had a sense of humour. Here in Melbourne at the 1956 Olympics, he told the story of a middle-aged Australian woman who, observing distressing scenes at the finish of the marathon exclaimed, "Cripes, how many qualify for the final?"… Back to Bannister, and the race: is it the sport's finest achievement? How does the 3.59.4 stack up with other athletic landmarks? Classics such as our own Ron Clarke's 27:39.4 in Oslo in 1965, a 35 second improvement on the previous mark.

  • The Gnostic Zombie in Robert Kirkman's the Walking Dead
Doing What Comes Unnaturally: The Gnostic Zombie in Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead Peter Y. Paik, Comparative Literature University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee I. Pursuing the Millennium, Redux The defining philosophic problem of modernity is that of the soul that has become closed within itself, and cannot get outside of itself. This closed soul is one that remains confined within the narrow orbit of a static and one-sidedly immanent account of human reality, which denies the very possibility of truths and experiences that transcend the circumscribed limits set by calculability and utility. The leading thinkers of the modern period have evoked in arresting ways the diminished spiritual, political, and historical horizon that afflicts modern man and woman. We may think here of Heidegger’s dictum that modern technology constitutes a mode of revealing that alters the way human beings relate to being, so that “everywhere and always” man only encounters himself.1 For Pierre Manent, modern man is cut off from the experience of conversion -- the postmodern tolerance of all differences is at the same time a flight from their necessarily competing claims of significance, ruling out thereby the possibility of being transformed by a singular difference.2 For Hannah Arendt, the crisis of modern politics stems from the waning of authority, which enables men and women to resolve their conflicts without resorting to violence and coercion,3 or, we might add in light of recent events, without putting social peace at the mercy of unsustainable levels of economic growth. José Ortega y Gasset, in Revolt of the Masses, provides a scathing portrait of the modern “mass man” who believes that there is no one capable of teaching him anything and who complacently imposes a technicist and materialist ideology on history and society.

  • Idea Exchange Brings Together Veterans and New Representatives
NEWSLETTER Idea Exchange Brings Together Veterans and April - June 2010 New Representatives from State Centers By Guy Lamolinara The axiom that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts was in evidence on June 28-29, when the State Centers for the Book came together in Washington for their annual Idea Exchange meeting. Many longtime faces were present and several new ones joined the fold of enthu- siastic promoters of books and reading. “This is always an exciting time for the Library of Congress and Center for the Book staff,” John Y. Cole, director of the national Center for the Book in Washington. Cole said he was also “excited” to take meeting attendees later in the day to the Jefferson Building for a visit to the Young Readers Center, which recently doubled in size in April. (The YRC officially opened The Center for the Book’s last October. See Center for the Book Newsletter September-December 2009.) networks of state centers and reading promotion part- Following self-introductions from those assembled, the group heard from Charles ners extend the reach of the Trueheart, director of the Center for the Book’s new reading promotion partner, national center far beyond the American Library in Paris, which is celebrating its 90th year. Comic books have rarely been treated as a serious art form or cultural phenomenon. It used to be that creating a comic book would be considered shameful or something done only as side work. Beginning in the 1990s, some comic creators were able to leverage enough cultural capital to influence more media. In the post-9/11 world, generic elements of superheroes began to resonate with audiences; superheroes fight against injustices and are able to confront the evils in today’s America. This has created a billion dollar, Oscar-award-winning industry of superhero movies, as well as allowed created comic book careers for artists and writers.

Scripted with a high emphasis on character development by novelist Meltzer Identity Crisisthe story has the feeling of a fresh start, even if its climax falls somewhat flat. The main arc is an affecting one, following the efforts of the Red Tornado—who's starting to get annoyed with having died so many times—to get back into his android body, or failing that, a mortal one so that he can be reunited with his beloved Kathy and adopted son. This ties in with scattered skirmishes between a JLA squad and a mob of evil Tornado clones. The series starts off stiffly, piling in a lot of exposition between cutting back to the JLA leaders' membership quarrels and crowding the story with a league of minor characters It's best seen as a competent new kickoff for the series rather than a stand-alone graphic novel.
