ICFRC Lecture – Wednesday, September 9, 12:00-1:00pm

Tibi Galis, PhD; Executive Director, the Auschwitz Institute for Peace & Reconciliation "Early Prevention of Mass Atrocities: Fulfilling Our Responsibility to Protect"

Many scholars argue that had the world known about the horrors of the holocaust, something would have been done to stop the systematic ethnic cleansing. Today, such genocides still exist throughout the world yet it seems nothing is done to alleviate them. This presentation will analyze the existing institutional infrastructures for mass atrocity prevention in various states and at the multilateral level. It will invite the audience to consider the effectiveness of the current arrangements and it will propose ways to continue the work that has been started in order to truly fulfill our responsibility to protect.

Tibi Galis has been the Executive Director of the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation since 2006. As a result of his efforts, AIPR, a small non-profit with the vision of making the world a better place, has developed into a major force within the international movement to combat genocide. In addition to his work for AIPR, Dr. Galis received his Ph.D., which explores the relationship between transitional justice and regime consolidation around the world, from Clark University. Dr. Galis has previously worked as an associate researcher for the UK Parliament, where he helped to develop the UK position regarding the Special Adviser on Genocide Prevention to the UN Secretary General, and also as a rapporteur for the Swedish government at the 2004 Stockholm International Forum on the Prevention of Genocide.

Luncheons are $10.00 for ICFRC members, $14.00 for non-members. We encourage you to bring guests who would enjoy this topic. Honors students please select the "Honors Student" option when registering. Click here to register, or contact the ICFRC office at: (319) 335-0351 or [email protected].

23 24 American INJUSTI E Mercy, Humanity and Making a Difference Bryan Stevenson, J.D. Sunday, October 4, 2015 at 2:00 PM Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge at the University of Iowa America has the largest prison population in the world – and the criminal justice system that puts the men, women, and children in these prisons is broken. Excessive punishment and abuse are widespread, and the collateral consequences are devastating lives and communities. An inspiring and unflinchingly honest speaker, Bryan Stevenson will talk about defending some of America’s most rejected and marginalized people. The stories he tells are heartbreaking, yet inspiring, and motivate audiences to make a change.

Bryan Stevenson will appear as part of the Iowa City Book Festival, in conjunction with the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, One Community One Book project, and the Geneva Lec- ture Series sponsored by Geneva Campus Ministry.

As an attorney, Stevenson has won relief for dozens of condemned prisoners, argued six times before the Supreme Court, and won national acclaim for his work challenging bias against the poor and people of color. Stevenson’s work fighting poverty and challenging racial discrimination in the criminal justice system has won him numerous awards, including the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant.

His book, Just Mercy, is the fall 2015 One Community One Book selection, and his appearance will cap a schedule of several events throughout the fall. The book was named by Time magazine as one of the 10 best books of nonfiction for 2014 and has been awarded several honors including a 2015 NAACP Image Award.

2. Humanitarian Campaigns. IUNA sponsors a number of campaigns to build awareness and raise funds for the humanitarian work of the United Nations. The campaigns include Trick or Treat for UNICEF, Hike to Help Refugees, Nothing but Nets, Shot at Life, and Girl Up. This intern will organize events, especially at UI and with members of the UI community, and recruit leaders and participants. Required: experience and passion for organizing community events; ability to recruit, inspire and manage volunteers.

3. IUNA Development. As a small non-profit, IUNA needs to identify and expand sources of revenue. This internship will focus on organizing community-based fundraising events (such as benefits at restaurants, primarily in Iowa City but also in other Iowa communities as time permits) and collaboration with the staff to explore other fundraising possibilities. Required: entrepreneurial spirit, fundraising, sales or marketing experience or skills.

In addition to internships, IUNA has opportunities for volunteers who help us as much as their schedules permit without a long-term commitment. Volunteers help out in our office, assist with events, work on the projects listed above, and other activities. Contact us!

The Iowa United Nations Association is the Iowa affiliate of the United Nations Association of the USA. IUNA’s mandate is to inform Iowans about the work of the UN, to engage them in this work, and to advocate for constructive United States leadership in the UN system. We have 400 members statewide, and six community chapters, including a student chapter at the University of Iowa. For more information see unaiowa.org

WFAN Conference: Nov. 6-7 Registration now open!

WFAN is pleased to host our 2015 annual conference in partnership with the Quad Cities Food Hub! The conference will be Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7, at the Radisson Quad City Plaza in Davenport, Iowa, and our theme is: Women Protecting Pollinators, Protecting Food. Click here to learn more about the conference and to register. The Quad Cities Food Hub is a bi-state initiative (staffed almost entirely by women) that connects farmers and consumers in Iowa and Illinois, in an effort to augment regional local food production and consumption. It's part of a network of Regional Food System Working Groups in the state of Iowa. Two outstanding projects are their Shared Use Community Kitchen, and Local Market Store, both located in the QCFH headquarters at the historic Freight House building on the banks of the Mississippi River. The Freight House also contains a farmers' market, a farm-to-table deli and a craft brewery and pub -- all within walking distance of the Radisson. Our urban ag field tour on Friday will make a stop at the Food Hub, and our popular Friday evening farm-to-table tasting event will take place in the community kitchen. See the draft agenda and learn more about lodging, field tours and intensives, and our keynote speaker at the conference page on our website.
