The sthala was called Tirutturaiyur and now is known as Tiruttalur. It is situated on the Villupuram-Cuddalore rail route. Sundarar was then named Nambi Arurar after his grandfather. According to the Siva Puranam, Sundarar is said to be the celestial that collected the poison (Halahala) in his hand and gave it to Lord Siva who absorbed it to protect the world. According to Lord Siva’s wish, Sundarar was to be born as a human being to sing the Tiru Thondat Thogai for the benefi t of mankind. So, when the servants of Goddess Parvati, Aninditi and Kamalini were gathering flowers in Mount Kailash, Sundarar gazed at them. They too, reciprocated his love. God Siva sent them to Earth to take human birth. It happened that one day, King Narasinga Munaiyar who was passing by, noticed the cute child playing with a temple car toy on the streets. The King was at once attracted by the child. He told the parents of Sundarar that he wanted to bring up the small boy. Sadaiyanar and Isaignani agreed to the King’s wish, as they were not attached to anything in the world. Sundarar grew under royal care and was brought up like a prince.

Map, illustrations, ap­ pendices, glossary, bibliography, indices. Cloth: US$57.50; ISBN 0-691-06767-8. An anthology of hymns to Siva from the Tevaraniy a significant South Indian scripture, has long been needed. One of three sacred texts familiar to the average Tamil Saivite (18), the Tevaram (Devaram) was previously available to readers unfamiliar with Tamil only through small snippets translated by K i n g s b u r y and P h i l l i p s into English full of Christian devotional phrases (1921). While these conveyed to some a general impres­ sion of devotion to God, they were less than transparent to the particular flavor of Tamil devotion to God 否iva. If “ poetry is the bhakti experience made palpable ” (49), these lucid renderings introduce us to a devotional experience at once familiar (to any lover of Ood) and strange (rooted so distinctively in South Indian landscapes and devotional-aesthetic sensibilities). The student of Tamil anthropology is helped with both aspects by an admirable Introduction (91 pp.) which could provide the germinal idea for a course on the origins of Hindu bhakti and its modern South Indian forms. The footnotes offer useful annotations on a wide range of resources for further study. (These are all listed in the bibliography, but the general index unfortunately does not cover authors or sources cited in the footnotes.) The Introduction succeeds in providing both historical contexts for the poems and historical consequences of the hymns in later devotional traditions.

God is One Om Shanti Mandiram Columbia MO 2001 The treasure was lost. We have regained it. This publication is not fully satisfactory. There is a tremendous scope for its improvement. Then why to publish it? The alternative was to let it get recycled. There is a popular saying in American academic circles: Publish or Perish. The only justification we have is to preserve the valuable contents for posterity. Yet it is one hundred times better than its original. We have devoted a great deal of our time, money, and energy to improve it. The entire work was recomposed on computer. Figures [pictures] were scanned and inserted. Diacritical marks were provided as far as possible. References to citations were given in certain cases. But when a vessel is already too dirty it is very difficult to clean it even in a dozen attempts. The original was an assemblage of scattered articles written by specialists in their own field. Some were extracted from publications already published. It was issued as a special number of a journal. It needed a competent editor. Even that too was not adequate unless the editor possessed sufficient knowledge of and full competence in all the subject areas covered. One way to make it correct and complete was to prepare a kind of draft and circulate it among all the writers, or among those who could critically examine a particular paper in their respective field.

    Temples within Chennai City 1 As the famous Tamil poetess AUVAYYAR says in Her Legendary presentation of cluster of hymns “Kovil illatha ooril kudi irukkathe” Please don’t reside in a place where there is no temple. The Statement of our forefathers is sacrosanct because the temple indicates that the community is graced by the presence of God and that its Citizens form a moral community. A Community identifies and is identified by others with its temples. It has been our ancient endavour to lead a pious life with full dedication to the services of the Lord. Sri Paramacharya of Kanchi Mutt has repeatedly called devotees and stressed the importance of taking care of old temples - which requires enormous power of men and money - instead of constructing new temples in cities. As you may be aware, there are thousands of temples in dilapidated condition and requires constant maintenance work to be undertaken. There are many shiva lingas of ancient temples found under trees and also while digging. In ancient times, these lingas were 'Moolavars' of temples built by several kings. After conquests and devastations by foreign invaders, Indian temples were destructed and the sacred deities were thrown away and many were broken. The left out deities are found later. Of them, some are unidentified. Those who attempt to construct temples for gods are freed from the sins of a thousand births. Those who think of building a temple in their minds are freed from the sins of a hundred births. Those who contribute to the cause of a temple are bestowed with divine virtues and blessings.

It is considered one of the main texts and though not read as much as some of the other more devotional texts or the more theological and philosophical texts, it nevertheless, stands out iconically as a key text for the movement and its followers. Śaiva Siddhānta is seen by many in Tamil Nadu, as a movement, which sometimes plays out in the discourse of the local Tamil culture, as an indigenous production. However, what is also of interest in this movement is its long relationship to pan-Indian movements and how it participates in these trans-local discourses. Here, I look at the role that the Tirumantiram plays in the production of these pan-Indian discourses, especially as they become localized in Tamil Nadu and how the text helps to bridge these two spheres--the local and global, as it gets co-opted into the local Tamil Śaiva Siddhānta movement. I also touch upon how this same text is used by a counter-cultural movement--the Tamil Cittar movement which, in opposition to the orthodox, high-caste Śaiva Siddhānta movement, uses this same very text but interprets it according to its own marginal discourse to make those same practices found in the text, available to a larger audience and set of practitioners.

    Lesson 6 The Nalvars are the four Siva saints The Nalvars are the four Siva saints who lived in Tamil Nadu around 1,200 years ago. Each composed devotional songs that are sung today in satsangs and temples. Who are these Saints? Their names are Appar, Sundarar, Sambandar and Manikkavasagar. All are deeply revered by Tamil Saivites. Saint Tirunavukkarasar, known as Appar Saint Tirunavukkarasar, known as Appar (“father”), traveled from temple to temple worshiping Siva. He chose the humblest of work, sweeping the temple walks and weeding the stone courtyards. Saint Sundarar Saint Sundarar is known for his deep visions of Lord Siva and for several miraculous events that occurred in his life. A poor man, he often prayed for money or food for his family. His prayers were always answered. Saint Sambandar The third saint, Sambandar, was just three years old when he was blessed with a vision of Lord Siva, after which he spontaneously sang his first song. He traveled throughout South India, sometimes with Appar, his elder, singing the praises of Siva. At age 16, his family arranged him to be married. But this was not to be. He was so devoted to Siva that just before the wedding, he disappeared into the sanctum of Tirunallurperuman Siva Temple near Chidambaram and was never seen again. Devarums The songs of the first three saints are called Devarams. Manikkavasagar Manikkavasagar, the fourth Nalvar, was prime minister to the Pandyan king of Madurai. One day he was blessed with enlightenment in a vision of Lord Siva sitting under a banyan tree.

Alvars and Nayanars and their Relations with the state(Rulers): Cholas, Pallavas and Pandyas ruled south India. Buddhism and Jainism had been prevalent in this region for several centuries. Alvars and Nayanars opposed Buddhism and Jainism through their hymns. This hostility was due to competition between religious traditions for royal patronage. Chola rulers supported Brahmanical and bhakti traditions, making land grants and constructing of temples for Vishnu and Shiva. In fact, some of the most magnificent Shiva temples, including those at Chidambaram, Thanjavur were constructed under the patronage of Chola rulers and representations Shiva in bronze sculpture were produced. Rulers tried to win the support of Alvars and Nayanars. The Chola kings often attempted to claim the divine support and proclaim their own power and status by building splendid temples that were adorned with stone and metal sculpture to recreate the visions of these popular saints who sang in language of the people. These kings also introduced the singing of Tamil Shaiva hymns in the temples under royal patronage, taking the initiative to collect and organise them into a text (Tevaram). Chola ruler Parantaka I had consecrated metal images of Bhakti Saints -Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar in a Shiva temple. These were carried in processions during the festivals of these saints.
