Sampanthar mastered Sanskrit by the age of 3 and by 7 he was writing his own treatise on the Vedas. He concentrated on removing the undesirable traits in Hinduism, and he trained many followers in the true traditions of Vedas, Upanishads and Puranas. He trained his followers in the art of debate on Hindu religion. Popular compositions: He started composing songs even when he was a toddler of just three years old and is believed to have written 16,000 verses in all, but less than 4,000 survive. His songs spread over 23 Panns (equivalent of Ragas). Introduction Hinduism is a loose cover term for many religious manifestations which originated in different regions and different ages in the South Asian sub- continent. The assertion of a Hindu identity is a modern phenomenon which tries to distance itself from other religious identities, mainly Islamic and Christian in India. There are some modern attempts to include religions like Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism (which also originated in South Asia) within the Hindu fold, but Buddhism which has become an international religion and Sikhism are successfully asserting their individuality. The origin of Hinduism is sometimes sought to be traced from the Indus Valley Civilization but the matter remains speculative as the study of that civilization has not progressed sufficiently to draw definite conclusions. The Vedic Civilization is a definite milestone in the development of Hinduism. The early phase in the development of Hinduism is the Brahmanical religion. Religions like Jainism and Buddhism arose as anti-Brahmanical movements. There were also philosophical movements like the Sàükhya, Yoga, Nyàya, Vai÷eùika, Mãmàüsà and Vedànta. These religions and philosophical movements were competing to win adherents but they were not exclusive in their approaches. There was some form of interaction among these groups and by the end of the Gupta period, the Bràhmaõical religion had become dominant in North India. The Tamils in the Far South of India have been able to have an identity of their own, in relation to North Indian religious developments. Along with Sanskrit, Tamil is also a classical language of India.

The sthala was called Tirutturaiyur and now is known as Tiruttalur. It is situated on the Villupuram-Cuddalore rail route. Sundarar was then named Nambi Arurar after his grandfather. According to the Siva Puranam, Sundarar is said to be the celestial that collected the poison (Halahala) in his hand and gave it to Lord Siva who absorbed it to protect the world. According to Lord Siva’s wish, Sundarar was to be born as a human being to sing the Tiru Thondat Thogai for the benefi t of mankind. So, when the servants of Goddess Parvati, Aninditi and Kamalini were gathering flowers in Mount Kailash, Sundarar gazed at them. They too, reciprocated his love. God Siva sent them to Earth to take human birth. It happened that one day, King Narasinga Munaiyar who was passing by, noticed the cute child playing with a temple car toy on the streets. The King was at once attracted by the child. He told the parents of Sundarar that he wanted to bring up the small boy. Sadaiyanar and Isaignani agreed to the King’s wish, as they were not attached to anything in the world. Sundarar grew under royal care and was brought up like a prince.

Map, illustrations, ap­ pendices, glossary, bibliography, indices. Cloth: US$57.50; ISBN 0-691-06767-8. An anthology of hymns to Siva from the Tevaraniy a significant South Indian scripture, has long been needed. One of three sacred texts familiar to the average Tamil Saivite (18), the Tevaram (Devaram) was previously available to readers unfamiliar with Tamil only through small snippets translated by K i n g s b u r y and P h i l l i p s into English full of Christian devotional phrases (1921). While these conveyed to some a general impres­ sion of devotion to God, they were less than transparent to the particular flavor of Tamil devotion to God 否iva. If “ poetry is the bhakti experience made palpable ” (49), these lucid renderings introduce us to a devotional experience at once familiar (to any lover of Ood) and strange (rooted so distinctively in South Indian landscapes and devotional-aesthetic sensibilities). The student of Tamil anthropology is helped with both aspects by an admirable Introduction (91 pp.) which could provide the germinal idea for a course on the origins of Hindu bhakti and its modern South Indian forms. The footnotes offer useful annotations on a wide range of resources for further study. (These are all listed in the bibliography, but the general index unfortunately does not cover authors or sources cited in the footnotes.) The Introduction succeeds in providing both historical contexts for the poems and historical consequences of the hymns in later devotional traditions.

Then why to publish it? The alternative was to let it get recycled. There is a popular saying in American academic circles: Publish or Perish. The only justification we have is to preserve the valuable contents for posterity. Yet it is one hundred times better than its original. We have devoted a great deal of our time, money, and energy to improve it. The entire work was recomposed on computer. Figures [pictures] were scanned and inserted. Diacritical marks were provided as far as possible. References to citations were given in certain cases. But when a vessel is already too dirty it is very difficult to clean it even in a dozen attempts. The original was an assemblage of scattered articles written by specialists in their own field. Some were extracted from publications already published. It was issued as a special number of a journal. It needed a competent editor. Even that too was not adequate unless the editor possessed sufficient knowledge of and full competence in all the subject areas covered. One way to make it correct and complete was to prepare a kind of draft and circulate it among all the writers, or among those who could critically examine a particular paper in their respective field.

M.A. ****** The Ohio State University 2006 Approved by Dissertation Committee: Professor Chadwick Allen, Adviser Adviser Professor Debra Moddelmog, Adviser Professor James Phelan Adviser English Graduate Program ABSTRACT Challenging the English-only bias in postcolonial theory and literary criticism, this dissertation investigates the role of the twentieth-century Tamil historical romance in the formation of Indian and Tamil identity in the colonial period. I argue that Tamil Indian writer-nationalist Kalki Ra. Krsnamurti’s (1899-1954) 1944 Civakamiyin Capatam (Civakami’s Vow)—chronicling the ill-fated wartime romance of Pallava king Narasimhavarman (630-668 CE) and fictional court dancer Civakami against the backdrop of the seventh-century Pallava-Chalukya wars—exemplifies a distinct genre of interventionist literature in the Indian subcontinent. In Kalki’s hands, the vernacular novel became a means by which to infiltrate the colonial imaginary and, at the same time, to envision a Tamil India untainted by colonial presence. Charting the generic transformation of the historical romance in the Tamil instance, my study provides 1) a refutation of the inflationary and overweening claims made in postcolonial studies about South Asian nationalism, 2) a questioning of naïve binaries such as local and global, cosmopolitan and vernacular, universal and particular, traditional and modern, in examining the colonial/postcolonial transaction, and 3) a case for a less grandiose and more carefully historicized account of bourgeois nationalism than has previously been provided by postcolonial critics, accounting for its complicities with ii and resistances to discourses of nation, region, caste, and gender in the late colonial context.
