January 1931 JOURNAL OF THE Society for Psychical Research MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The 276th Meeting of the Council was held at 31 Tavistock Square, London, W.C.I, on Thursday, 11 December 1930, at 5 p.m., Sir Lawrence Jones, Bart., in the chair. There were also present : Mr W. R. Bousfield, K.C., Miss Ina Jephson, Mr W. H. Salter, Mrs W. H. Salter, Dr F. C. S. Schiller and Dr V. J. Woolley ; also Mr Theodore Besterman, Librarian and Editor, and Miss Isabel Newton, Secretary. The Minutes of the last Meeting of the Council were read and signed as correct. It was decided to hold the Annual General Meeting at 3.30 p.m. on Friday, 26 February 1931. GENERAL MEETING. The 177th General Meeting of the Society was held at Friends House, Euston Road, London, N.W.I, on Wednesday, 26 November 1930, at 6 p.m., Sir Lawrence Jones, Bart., in the chair. Miss Ina Jephson read a Report on " Further Experiments in Card-guessing, with a more Evidential Technique." Miss Jephson gave a summary of the experiments recently conducted by Mr Soal, Mr Besterman and herself, reports of which will, it is hoped, appear shortly in Proceedings. An interesting discussion followed. NOTICE. Members will have observed that the Index and Titlepage of the volume of the Journal just completed were issued to all members with the December number, instead of to those only who purchased binding-cases, as heretofore. This departure will, it is hoped, encourage more members to bind and preserve their Journals for future use and reference. Complete sets of the Society's publications are now very difficult to form and this will become more and more 2 Journal of Society for Psychical Research January 1931 difficult as time passes. It is therefore in their own interests that members are advised to preserve their copies. Binding-cases for vols, xxv and xxvi (which are treated for this purpose as a single volume) can be supplied for Is. 6d. Alternatively, members can send in their sets of the Journal for the two years (1929 and 1930) and have them bound by the Society's binders for 4s. 0d., which includes the cost of the binding-case. Missing numbers of the Journal for recent years can be supplied for 9d. each. Orders should be accompanied by remittances, and should be addressed to the Secretary. TRANSACTIONS OF THE ATHENS CONGRESS. The Transactions of the Athens Congress are now published, and can be supplied for 7s. 6d., on application to the Secretary. The following case has been contributed by a friend of Mrs Salter, known to readers of the Journal as Miss Ann Jones. Miss Jones has had other apparently supernormal experiences, which will be found recorded in the Journal (1912), xv. 337-9, 339-42 (on which cp. xvi. 14-5) xvi. 51-6 (cp. ; (1913), xvi. 78-9) ; (1914), xvi. 306-10 (cp. xxi. 117-8) 350-2. ; (1924), Several of these cases are discussed by Mrs Sidgwick in her supplementary examination of " Phantasms of the Living/'' Proceedings (1922), xxxiii. 317-8, 330-1, 352-3. 4 Journal of Society for Psychical Research januaey 1931 Miss Jones's, account of her experiences, which is dated 13 July 1930, is as follows : "Death of Camille Vidart. " On the morning of Saturday June 28th I was unable to get to work as usual because of a sense of disturbance and of a death of some importance. It seemed to me that some public person was dying. I knew that the death did not concern my husband who was away in Kent at the time. Towards noon the feeling became so insistent that I called my housemaid Dorothy Holtby out on to the roof where I was trying to write and told her to make a note of the day and of my premonition.

    Chapter 3 Psychic Phenomena and the Mind–Body Problem: Historical Notes on a Neglected Conceptual Tradition Carlos S. Alvarado Abstract Although there is a long tradition of philosophical and historical discussions of the mind–body problem, most of them make no mention of psychic phenomena as having implications for such an issue. This chapter is an overview of selected writings published in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries literatures of mesmerism, spiritualism, and psychical research whose authors have discussed apparitions, telepathy, clairvoyance, out-of-body experiences, and other parapsy- chological phenomena as evidence for the existence of a principle separate from the body and responsible for consciousness. Some writers discussed here include indi- viduals from different time periods. Among them are John Beloff, J.C. Colquhoun, Carl du Prel, Camille Flammarion, J.H. Jung-Stilling, Frederic W.H. Myers, and J.B. Rhine. Rather than defend the validity of their position, my purpose is to docu- ment the existence of an intellectual and conceptual tradition that has been neglected by philosophers and others in their discussions of the mind–body problem and aspects of its history. “The paramount importance of psychical research lies in its demonstration of the fact that the physical plane is not the whole of Nature” English physicist William F.     THEODORE DEODATUS NATHANIEL BESTERMAN A personal memoir of his step-grandfather by Tristram Besterman Cornwall, March 2015 Frontispiece: portrait of Theodore Besterman made at Studio Harcourt, Paris, in the late 1940s. It is inscribed by Theodore to his wife, Evelyn, my paternal grandmother. Studio Harcourt was formed in 1934 and is renowned for its black and white portraits of celebrities and the élite of Paris society. Still active today, Studio Harcourt boasts an inimitable style that is “Le mariage entre mystère et légende”. 1 Preamble In assembling these recollections, I have responded to an invitation by Professor Nicholas Cronk, Director of The Voltaire Foundation at the University of Oxford, who suggested that my personal memories would complement the excellent account of Theodore Besterman’s life and achievements by Giles Barber1, written in 2010 for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. I have drawn on a number of sources: my own memories of the man who was the nearest thing to a paternal grandfather in my life; a few handwritten notes, photographs and letters passed down to me; stories about him that were passed on orally by my father, Edwin Besterman (these have the ring of truth about them, albeit inevitably embellished with repeated telling by an accomplished raconteur); and last, my father’s succinct, type-written memoir on his family. I have structured this account in four parts. Family background is self- explanatory. Earlier fragments covers the period before my birth and Later fragments the period after. In the final section, Reflections, I ponder the complexities and contradictions that characterise Theodore’s distinctive persona.

There is to my knowledge only one investigation into the accounts where the information is collated—by the prominent American psychical researcher, Dr Walter Franklin Prince (1863- 1934),2 but this has remained rather obscure. Prince’s research was published by the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) in their Journal (JSPR) December 1930,3 then a private publication unlike its Proceedings. A particularly useful one, and the focus of the present article, is Nandor Fodor’s Encyclopaedia of Psychic Science (Fodor, n.d., circa 1933 or 1934). The encyclopedia has more than 900 alphabetically arranged entries. These cover such phenomena as apparitions, auras, automatic writing, clairvoyance, hauntings, materialization, poltergeists, premoni- tions, psychometry, and telepathy, but also mediums and psychics, re- searchers and writers, magazines and journals, organizations, theoretical ideas, and other topics. In addition to the content of this work, and some information about its author, it is argued that the Encyclopaedia is a good reference work for the study of developments from before 1933, even though it has some omissions and bibliographical problems. Widely used by writers interested in overviews of the literature, Fodor’s work is part of a reference literature developed over the years to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge about the early publications of the field by students of psychic phenomena.

The experimental Scientist posits that claims to these phenomena are fraudulent and its possibility doubtful. They went further to believe that only experimental procedures that adopt the accepted scientific methods can prove its truth or falsity. This article assumes that the propaganda for experimental scientific method hampers successful research and investigation into the paranormal. It went further to assert that a careful perusal of paranormal and experimental science shows that all parts of the universe are connected in an intimate way, both in the seen and unseen energies as was previously posited by mystics without scientific proof. INTRODUCTION Paranormal simply suspect that we do not know everything about nature. The paranormal “consists of alleged occurrences or powers which, if actual cannot be explained by our current understanding of Physics” [Terry Davidson.2010.] Paranormal phenomena are anathema to orthodox scientists because they neglect the central dogma of the materialistic faith: that everything is explicable in terms of physical matter - energy operating according to known Laws. Many scientists are so convinced that the paranormal does not exist and that no amount of evidence will ever persuade them otherwise.

    MEDICINA NEI SECOLI ARTE E SCIENZA, 31/1 (2019) 111-132 Journal of History of Medicine Articoli/Articles PHYSICIANS AND SÉANCES ON THE ROAD TOWARDS THE SPECTACULARIZATION OF SPIRITUALISM GERMANA PARETI Department of Philosophy and Educational Sciences - University of Turin, Turin, I Ibfm - CNR Segrate (MI), I SUMMARY Riding on the wave of the neo-vitalist reaction to mechanistic philosophy, which swept through the fields of medicine and biology in Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century, a large group of scientists embraced the psychical research that had emerged in England – not to be confused with spiritualism – because the aim was to study the spirit-phenomena with scientific tools and methods. In addition to French psychologists and psychiatrists (including Richet and Janet), this group of psychical researchers also included German (Driesch and Schrenck-Notzing), Italian (Lombroso and Morselli) and American (James) scholars. Contributions were also made by poets, writers and musicologists who were attracted to the occult. Meanwhile, the fusion of different types of knowledge gave rise to investigations (more or less scientific) into the growing spectacularization of the paranormal, which today is studied by experts in communication theories. Introduction Vitalism resurfaced towards the end of the nineteenth century, flooding the European philosophical-scientific landscape and, in particular, the fields of medicine and biology. Published by Cambridge University Press 2012 doi:10.1017/mdh.2011.36 Policing Epistemic Deviance: Albert von Schrenck-Notzing and Albert Moll1 ANDREAS SOMMER∗ UCL Centre for the History of Psychological Disciplines, University College London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, UK Abstract: Shortly after the death of Albert von Schrenck-Notzing (1862–1929), the doyen of early twentieth century German para psychology, his former colleague in hypnotism and sexology Albert Moll (1862–1939) published a treatise on the psychology and pathology of parapsychologists, with Schrenck-Notzing serving as a prototype of a scientist suffering from an ‘occult complex’. Moll’s analysis concluded that parapsychologists vouching for the reality of supernormal phenomena, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, telekinesis and materialisations, suffered from a morbid will to believe, which paralysed their critical faculties and made them cover obvious mediumistic fraud. Using Moll’s treatment of Schrenck-Notzing as an historical case study of boundary disputes in science and medicine, this essay traces the career of Schrenck-Notzing as a researcher in hypnotism, sexology and parapsychology; discusses the relationship between Moll and Schrenck-Notzing; and problematises the pathologisation and defamation strategies of deviant epistemologies by authors such as Moll.
