Big Bang – Shout Out To The World! (English Translation) [2009] Shout out to the World: TOP “I came here because of that string of hope. Where do I stand now? I ask myself this but even I don’t have a specific answer yet. During the process where I search for my other self, all my worries will fade away because I must find the person who will lend his shoulders to me.” ~TOP Name: Choi Seung-hyun Date of Birth: November 4, 1987 Skills: Rap, Writing lyrics, Beatbox *Starred in the KBS Drama, ‘I am Sam’ The power to awaken a soul, sometimes it takes pain to be re-born. [~ Pt.One~] -I once wanted to be a lyric poet that composed and recited verses.- I became mesmerized with ‘Hip-Hop’ music when I was in Grade 5. I went crazy for this type of music because I listened to it all day and carefully noted all the rap lyrics. If we have to talk about Hip-Hop music, I have to briefly talk about the roots of American Hip-Hop. When I first started listening to Hip-Hop, it was divided up into East Coast and West Coast in America. Wu Tang Clan and Notorius B.I.G. represented the East Coast (New York) scene and they focused largely on the rap and the lyrics, while representing the West Coast (LA) was 2Pac who focused more on the melody. Although at that time in Korea and from my memory, more people listened to West Coast hip hop but I was more into the East Coast style.

  • Conceptually Androgynous
Umeå Center for Gender Studies Conceptually androgynous The production and commodification of gender in Korean pop music Petter Almqvist-Ingersoll Master Thesis in Gender Studies Spring 2019 Thesis supervisor: Johanna Overud, Ph. D. ABSTRACT Stemming from a recent surge in articles related to Korean masculinities, and based in a feminist and queer Marxist theoretical framework, this paper asks how gender, with a specific focus on what is referred to as soft masculinity, is constructed through K-pop performances, as well as what power structures are in play. By reading studies on pan-Asian masculinities and gender performativity - taking into account such factors as talnori and kkonminam, and investigating conceptual terms flower boy, aegyo, and girl crush - it forms a baseline for a qualitative research project. By conducting qualitative interviews with Swedish K-pop fans and performing semiotic analysis of K-pop music videos, the thesis finds that although K-pop masculinities are perceived as feminine to a foreign audience, they are still heavily rooted in a heteronormative framework. Furthermore, in investigating the production of gender performativity in K-pop, it finds that neoliberal commercialism holds an assertive grip over these productions and are thus able to dictate ‘conceptualizations’ of gender and project identities that are specifically tailored to attract certain audiences. Lastly, the study shows that these practices are sold under an umbrella of ‘loyalty’ in which fans are incentivized to consume in order to show support for their idols – in which the concept of desire plays a significant role. Each of these songs have been selected as examples of K-pop that have been designed to be marketed beyond the borders of Korea, targeting an increasingly global audience. Despite featuring primarily Korean lyrics, these major hits remain popular among the millions of fans overseas who cannot understand most of the words.

Many of functional foods are originated from the traditional herbal medicine, and the scientific substantiation of the e#ectiveness of these products is required for the regulatory standards as well as for consumer protection. Needs for the reliable and e$cient methods of scientific substantiation are increasing, and nutrigenomics may provide a short-cut way to scientific evaluation of many functional food ingredients and herbal medicine which have been used in the tradition- al societies for thousand years. Studies to apply nutrigenomic methodologies to the objective classific- ation of Sasang body constitution types of Korean are reviewed. It is suggested that the empirical health food knowledge accumulated in the Eastern medicine may be explained scientifically by using the nutri- genomic methods, and it will contribute to open the custom-made nutrigenetic food age in the near future. • Hallyu at a Crossroads: the Clash of Korea's Soft Power Success and China's Hard Power Threat in Light of Terminal High
Asian International Studies Review Vol. 18 No.1 (June 2017): 153-169 153 Received March 15, 2017 Revised May 10, 2017 Accepted May 20, 2017 Hallyu at a Crossroads: The Clash of Korea’s Soft Power Success and China’s Hard Power Threat in Light of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) System Deployment HANNAH JUN* The past two decades have witnessed the remarkable success of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, with Korea welcoming a large influx of foreign visitors and benefiting from massive consumption of products ranging from Korean television and film, K-pop and lifestyle products. A more recent announcement by CJ E&M points to an even more aggressive plan for regional ubiquity, as encapsulated by Hallyu 4.0. Simultaneously, we have already felt some of the effect of policy changes in China – a core Hallyu market – as a response to Korea’s plan to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. In this sense, we see the stirrings of a clash between Korean soft power and Chinese hard power, and are uncertain who will emerge on top. This paper examines the broad success of Hallyu from key theoretical perspectives, while addressing linkages between Korean corporations and cultural power/influence that have led to an announcement such as Hallyu 4.0. This paper also highlights the recent tensions between Korea and China, specifically with respect to THAAD deployment, and outlines potential implications for businesses and policymakers through preliminary scenarios. • YG Entertainment (122870 KQ ) Global Platform Revenue Exhibits Strong Growth
YG Entertainment (122870 KQ ) Global platform revenue exhibits strong growth 3Q18 review: Parent and YouTube both better than expected Entertainment For 3Q18, YG Entertainment reported consolidated revenue of W65.2bn (-13.3% YoY ) and operating profit of W2.6bn (+77.8% YoY). Operating profit fell short of our Results Comment estimate, which did not include content production losses (W1.7bn ). Still, we believe the company pe rformed in line with market expectations, considering the unfavorable November 12, 2018 earnings variables it faced in the quarter. Revenue from YouTube was also better than expected. Despite a widely anticipated void in concerts, Seungri, iKON, and BLACKPINK made great strides in the quarter. In particular, 1) BLACKPINK’s success drove robust digital (Maintain) Buy music revenue (W14.1bn; -11.3% YoY). 2) In addition, revenue from YouTube, a key area of focus, grew strongly to more than W3bn, likely exceeding the 1H18 total. Even after excluding one-time revenue from G-Dragon ’s documentary, YouTube revenue was Target Price (12M, W) 60,000 better than our expectation of W2bn. We believe domestic digital music sales, a relatively stable source of income, and global platform sales (YouTube ads, Apple Share Price (11/09/18, W) 36,200 Music/Spotify licensing, etc.), a fast-growing source of income, will both continue to make an increasing contribution to profits. Expected Return 66% 3) The content production business recorded a loss of W1.7bn (vs. loss of W10.1bn in 4Q17-2Q18), due to higher-than-expected fixed costs. Upcoming programs include YG Treasure Box and another new title for Netflix (NFLX US/CP: US$301.00).

  • YG Entertainment
YG Entertainment (122870 KQ ) Uncertainties lie ahead Entertainment TP lowered to W32,000; positive expectations overshadowed by earnings void We are lowering our target price on YG Entertainment by 17% to W32,000 (based on Results Comment P/E of 25x). We reduced our 2018 net profit attributable to controlling interests forecast to W23.5bn, taking into account: 1) a higher effective tax rate (30% level); 2) February 23, 2018 early recognition of iKON concerts in 2017; and 3) won appreciation. The company had a hefty tax bill in 1Q18, which we believe was because only half of the limit on income deduction for services provided overseas was applied in the quarter, a factor that shou ld be reflected in future net profit forecasts. Given that royalties account for nearly 30% of consolidated revenue, we assume an effective tax rate in the 30% range (Downgrade) Trading Buy for 2018 onwards. Some potential opportunities still exist, including: 1) growth of the company’s lineup Target Price (12M, W) ▼ 32,000 outside of Big Bang; 2) new content ventures; and 3) normalization in China. However , we believe such tailwinds are overshadowed by tax issues and the upcoming void in earnings. We think expectations need to be lowered until the aforement ioned Share Price (02/22/18, W) 28,700 tailwinds become visible. 4Q17 review: Higher taxes result in net loss Expected Return 11% For 4Q17, YG Entertainment reported consolidated revenue of W95.5bn (+35.8% YoY) and operating profit of W4.6bn (+30% YoY). Revenue topped the consensus, but operating profit fell short (consensus estimates were W82.9bn and W7.1bn, OP (17P, Wbn) 25 respectively).

  • Research on the Identity Construction of Korean Pop Music's Fandom
Research on the Identity Construction of Korean Pop Music’s Fandom Groups on the Weibo Platform, Exemplified by G-Dragon (Kwon Ji-Yong) Department of Informatics and Media Master Program in Digital Media & Society Uppsala University Author: Yifan Chang Advisor: Göran Svensson 2014 0 I. Abstract In this thesis, I take a research on the identity construction of G-Dragon’s fandom group on the Weibo platform. Through the blended netnography, which consists of online participant observation and offline in-depth interview, I analyze the process of how the self-identity constructs among those fans through their online practical activities and how the fandom group forms their cultural identity from the cross-cultural perspective. In my analysis, I find that the construction of self-identity is realized in several ways, which are self-evaluation and the other’s evaluation, the projection of intention and emotion, anti-group consumption and cosplay. Also, I try to discuss the identity construction from the cross-cultural perspective. Because the K-pop music is a cross-cultural media product, so the fans have to face two identities: Chinese and Korean pop music fans. Through an analysis of cultural similarity and cultural conflict, I aim to discuss how the cultural similarity affects the construction process of self-identity, how the fandom group struggles in the cultural conflict in order to construct their self-identity and how we consider the abroad fandom group constructing their self-identity from the cultural hybridity perspective. In my discussion chapter, I will try to set some further prospects for the future research field.
