Violence and Social Orders
This page intentionally left blank VIOLENCE AND SOCIAL ORDERS All societies must deal with the possibility of violence, and they do so in different ways. This book integrates the problem of violence into a larger social science and historical framework, showing how economic and political behavior are closely linked. Most societies, which we call natural states, limit violence by political manipulation of the economy to create privileged interests. These privileges limit the use of violence by powerful individuals, but doing so hinders both economic and political development. In contrast, modern societies create open access to economic and political organizations, fostering political and economic competition. The book provides a framework for understanding the two types of social orders, why open access societies are both politically and economically more developed, and how some twenty- five countries have made the transition between the two types. Douglass C. North is co-recipient of the 1993 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sci- ence. He is the Spencer T. Olin Professor in Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, where he served as director of the Center for Political Economy from 1984 to 1990, and is the Bartlett Burnap Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research for twenty years, Professor North received the John R. Commons Award in 1992. The author of ten books, including Institutions, Institutional Change, and Economic Performance (Cambridge University Press, 1990) and Understanding the Process of Economic Change (2005), Professor North has research interests in property rights, economic organization in history, and the formation of political and economic institutions and their consequences through time. -

In offering this little volume to the British public, I am animated by the hope that it may find its way, into the hands, among others, of those who are un- happily so placed as to bear the responsibility of caring and providing for the mentally affected. To such, the information it contains ought to be of the greatest practical value. It reveals to them a secret after which their hearts must long have yearned, and happily not only a secret, but an available fact—that their afflicted charges need not be subjected to incarceration, restrictions, coercion, viii PREFACE. -

Solidago 21(1), April 2020 ~ 3 ~ Name That Plant Letters Contest Hello Bob
Solidago Newsletter of the Founded in 1997. Finger Lakes Native Plant Society Logo art of Tall Goldenrod, Solidago altissima, by Nat Cleavitt, 2006. Volume 21, No. 1 April 2020 Editorial Looking Ahead to Spring! by Robert Dirig Dear Readers, HIS ISSUE is arriving a month later than usual, due to my preoccupation with another project throughout the winter. An April date is actually fortuitous, as it parallels some welcome hints of spring in a beleaguered world. The Western Hemisphere, and the whole planet, has recently come under siege by an aggressive micro- scopic pathogenscopic — which is a new experience for most of us. This has necessitated a withdrawal from much that is familiar, as we stay indoors and isolate ourselves from others. An unfortunate corollary of this situation is the cancellation of public events that assemble people. Thus our Steering Committee has reluctantly been obliged to cancel our remaining calendar for the spring, including our evening programs and walks. We hope to reschedule the talks that were planned for March, April, and May in autumn 2020, or early in 2021. In the meantime, please check our website (www.flnps.org) from time to time to see if anything is scheduled in the coming months. We hope to resume a normal schedule in September, and I plan to produce another issue of Solidago in June. Embedded in this nagging inconvenience is a rare gift of time at home for creative and personal pursuits, and a chance just to rest from the frenzy of modern life. Spring proceeds steadily outdoors, as days lengthen, new green leaves and flowers unfold, songbirds return from migration, the earliest butterfly hibernators fly in the woods, and the weather warms. -

Mikky Ekko Has Come Home. He Recorded His 2015 Debut Album
Mikky Ekko has come home. He recorded his 2015 debut album, Time, in places as far-flung as London, Stockholm, and Los Angeles, plus any point on the compass where inspiration struck while he was on tour with Justin Timberlake, One Republic and Jessie Ware. But he wanted to record Fame, his next album, in the city that had proved both a permanent address and an inspiration for him since moving there in 2005 to attend college. It’s said that people have lucky cities, a geographic location where they seem to flourish or feel that they are their best selves. Although born in Shreveport, Louisiana, with its rich history of country rock and electric blues, Ekko found such a place in Nashville. It allowed him the freedom to be who he wanted to be — starting with those early gigs he played at 12th and Porter with slashes of red painted across his chiseled face. It informed the haunting music of his largely a cappella 2009 dreamscape Strange Fruit, a five-song EP he recorded while still a student at nearby Middle Tennessee State University that had far more in common with Brian Eno than it did Billie Holiday. A restless creator — sometimes writing two songs a day, starting most days at 4:45 am — Ekko quickly followed up Strange Fruit with two companion EPs the next year: Reds and Blues. One of the songs on Reds, "Who Are You, Really,” made its way to underground beatsmith Clams Casino, known mainly for his work with ASAP Rocky, Lil B and The Weeknd. -

Declet 1 Alex Declet Prof. Sammons MPA 475: Capstone Engineers in Jazz Most of the general public do not know how much goes into the music making process as an engineer. Historically, with devices such as the phonograph, gramophone and early analog tape there was a push to get more audio out to the masses and engineers went from a documentary state of recording to a qualitative state. With technology like the record player, audiences had easy ways of accessing and listening to music in their own homes. The public even today buys physical or digital albums without taking a good look at who or what was involved in the process of making the album complete and ready to sell. The innovative minds in the recording industry, hidden in the liner notes of the albums, were engineers like Rudy Van Gelder, Frank Laico, and Tom Dowd just to name a few. -
