Common Plants of the INL Site
Preface Although we sincerely hope this guidebook will appeal to a broad audience, it was written for a specific purpose; to aid in plant identi- fication for vegetation projects at the INL (Idaho National Laboratory). Therefore, several aspects of the format and content of this book were specifically chosen to facilitate vegetation data collection. For example, each species is presented alphabetically by a four letter code that is typically derived from the first two letters of the genus and the first two letters of the specific epithet. These codes are commonly used and widely accepted abbrevia- tions for vegetation data. The codes used in this book generally follow the USDA Plants National Database (2004); however, a few species are listed under codes that are traditional to the INL (i.e. ARTP). When two species share the same code, at least one of the species is assigned a number (i.e. ERNA2) so that they can be easily differentiated from one another. The number is specific to the INL plant species list and is related to the abundance of that species at the INL. The parenthetical immediately following the code indicates origin (Native or Introduced) and duration (Annual, Biennial, Perennial). A table containing species’ scientific names and their associated codes can be found in a table at the end of the book. Identification follows Hitchcock and Cronquist (1973), but several scientific names and codes have been updated to reflect recent reclassifications. The updated classifications and nomenclature can be viewed on the USDA Plants National Database (2004). The book is a second edition of a living document that will continue to change as its utility is assessed and tested through use in the field. -

This report briefly describes the main vegetation types and lists the vascular plant species that are known to occur in and near the Pawnee National Grassland, Weld County, Colorado. A checklist includes the scientific and common names for 521 species. Of these, 115 plant species (22 percent) are not native to this region. The life forms, habitats, and geographic distribution of native and introduced plants are summarized and discussed. Hazlett, a native of the eastern plains of Colorado, has lived and worked in the Pawnee National Grassland region since 1983. Before 1983 Don spent 12 years working in Honduras and Costa Rica. He has worked for Colorado State University as site manager for the Central Plains Experimental Range, as a visiting professor in the biology department, and as a plant taxonomist for the Center for Ecological Management of Military Lands. Since 1995 Don has been a research contractor for ecological and floristic studies in the western United States. He prefers ethnobotanical studies. Oliver Walter, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences Charboneau, Joseph L.M., A floristic inventory of Phillips and Valley counties, Montana, U.S.A., M.S., Department of Botany, May, 2013. This study marks the first floristic inventory of Valley and Phillips counties on the glaciated plains of northeastern Montana. The 8,954 sq mi (23,191 sq km) study area was surveyed for all vascular plant taxa on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, State of Montana, American Prairie Reserve, and The Nature Conservancy. Elevation ranges from 2,020–5,720 ft (616–1,743 m). In the summers of 2010 and 2011, 12,785 voucher specimens were collected from 308 sites documenting 761 unique taxa, 717 species, and 358 genera from 86 families. Among these are 108 taxa exotic to Montana, nine noxious weed species, and 15 taxa of conservation concern. Approximately 32% of the taxa collected are newly documented within the area. Results are enumerated in an annotated checklist and vegetation types are described. Introduced species have increased from five percent of the flora to 13% over the last century. Relatively small changes have occurred in plant species duration, species habit or major groups over 100 years. Mean coefficients of conservatism varied from 4.3 to 6.2 in eight areas across the county, with the lowest values in riparian areas and highest values in pine-dominated buttes. Keywords floristics, grassland, Northern Great Plains, South Dakota, vegetation INTRODUCTION This report documents vascular plant species from Harding County, South Dakota, from historical and recent plant collections. Literature describing the flora of Harding County is lacking. The most notable publication is by Visher (1914) who completed a species list for the county. Visher’s publication was based upon collections made by him in 1910-1912, and collections made by Rowley in 1909, Fromme in 1910, and Over in 1911. Heidel and Dueholm (1995) reported on “sensitive” species in Custer National Forest in Carter County, Montana, and Harding County.
