It does not, however, include purely literary, ritual and funerary texts. This book presents the hieroglyphic texts from the long, prosperous and relatively well-sourced reign of Ramesses II (c.1279–1213 bc). The previous volume (II) made available the ‘official’ and royal records issued or engraved in the king’s name, personifying (as he did) the effective government of ancient Egypt for his time. Here, by contrast, we have records that concern pri- marily, or were left us by, the king’s subjects at all levels of society, from viziers and viceroys at the head of the royal administration (along with priesthoods and the military) down through society’s echelons to the workmen who laboured in the royal tombs in Western Thebes (based in Deir el-Medina village) and the humble folk that served them. For Deir el-Medina, both collective (‘official’) records and the mementos of individuals and families have been kept to- gether, not to split up data that in effect belong together. -

This article aims at presenting the Egyptological investigation of personal piety by providing both a history of its study and an overview of related issues and of the theories and methods applied to its research up to the present. -

ABSTRACT This thesis examines the desire for contact with deities in Egypt, the artistic and textual expression of which can be viewed as characteristic of ‘personal piety’. The attribution of hearing abilities to deities through epithets and phrases is evocative of human attempts to communicate with the divine sphere, and the Egyptian evidence is presented. A case study of so-called ‘intermediary statues’, which claim to facilitate communication between human and god, offers an opportunity to investigate how some members of the elite adapted their artistic output to take advantage of popular beliefs, furthering their own commemoration. Sistrophorous statues (bearing a naos-sistrum) are well-represented in the intermediary corpus, and their symbolism is explored alongside the significance of statue form and temple location in the context of communication with gods. -

Date: 10/09/2014 iii Summary This thesis is an examination and discussion of the areas in which women engaged in religious practice during the Nineteenth Dynasty period of ancient Egyptian history. Based on literary, inscriptional, archaeological, artistic and iconographic evidence, this thesis identifies the numerous feminine religious titles that were in use during the Nineteenth Dynasty, including the Sma.yt and the wr.t xnr.wt, and examines their associated roles and actions in relation to religious worship and celebration, as well as the social status and family connections of the title holders and the development, frequency and distribution of the titles themselves. The thesis also examines the roles and significance of female mourners in mortuary ritual – specifically the funerary procession and the rites performed before the tomb door, and the presence of women in the tomb itself is discussed, with particular consideration paid to the significance of the types of women who appear, where they appear, what they are depicted doing and what information about them is recorded. Other acts of female personal piety, such as the involvement of women in religious festivals and the adoration of deities through dedicatory stelae, both in conjunction with their male relatives and on their own, are also addressed. -

CENTRE D’ARCHÉOLOGIE MÉDITERRANÉENNE DE L’ACADÉMIE POLONAISE DES SCIENCES ÉTUDES et TRAVAUX XXII 2008 MARTA SANKIEWICZ Cryptogram Uraeus Frieze in the Hatshepsut Temple at Deir el-Bahari 200 MARTA SANKIEWICZ There are two kinds of friezes crowning the decoration of the walls in the temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. One of them is the kheker frieze, commonly met in the temples and tombs.1 The other one is a peculiar uraeus frieze specifi c to Hatshepsut. The frieze consists of fi gures composed of a rearing cobra crowned with a solar disk placed between cow-horns (the so-called hathoric crown), seated upon the kA-hieroglyph. The cobra is holding the Sn-sign. Between the fi gures anx and Dd signs may be placed. In most cases the arms of the kA-sign were chiseled out. The ‘hathoric uraeus’2 seated on the kA-sign is commonly interpreted as a cryptographic writing of Hatshepsut’s name. Beside its occurrences as an element constructing the friezes in some of Hatshepsut’s buildings, it appears in the statuary and tomb decoration of that time (see below). Although the existence of this cryptogram frieze was widely noticed, it has rarely been discussed in a more detailed way.3 The frieze was termed variously as e.g. ‘uraeus border’,4 ‘serpent frieze’,5 ‘Kamaarea frieze’,6 ‘Namenfries’,7 ‘frieze of cartouches (cryptographic)’,8 „monogram” frieze’,9 ‘frise de cobras’,10 ‘cobras-frieze’,11 ‘cobra frieze’,12 ‘cryptogram frieze’,13 ‘une frise ornée du monogramme d’Hatchepsout’14 or just described as ‘frieze * I would like to express my sincerest thanks to Dr. -

Bryson 2018 All Rights Reserved Abstract The pharaoh Horemheb, the general who became king, has long been recognized as a pivotal figure in the history of New Kingdom Egypt. In the last half-century, important new archaeological evidence has expanded our view of the king and his historical context, particularly the years before he took the throne. There has not, however, been a dedicated, scholarly study of the reign since 1964. This dissertation examines Horemheb’s years as pharaoh, particularly with regard to how his reign contributed to the direction that Egypt would take in the first decades of the Ramesside era. The present work begins with an historiographical analysis of how Horemheb has been characterized by Egyptologists since the nineteenth century. The art and architecture associated with him are then analyzed stylistically and programmatically, clarifying what can truly be said to have originated during the reign. A prosopography of the officials who served under the king addresses how the structures of government and elite society changed from the reign of Tutankhamun into that of Ramesses II. A key text of the reign is analyzed with respect to how its rhetoric and its mythological allusions help to reveal the political conditions of the period. Finally, the historical memory of Horemheb in the ancient world, from the end of his reign through the Greco-Roman period, is taken into consideration. -
