Jesus chose to give up his life to save us from sin and to open the gates of Heaven to us. • Why did the people let Jesus die? They didn’t know that he was God. [10 min] Discover – We Remember (p. 38-39) • The three days before Easter are called the Triduum. o On Holy Thursday, we remember Jesus’ Last Supper when he washed his apostles’ feet and gave them the Eucharist for the first time. o On Good Friday we remember Jesus’ Crucifixion and death. o On Holy Saturday, we look forward to Jesus rising from the dead. The priest lights the Easter candle and blesses holy water. New members of the Church are baptized on this day. • How can you help others carry their “cross”? Today let’s talk about the Liturgy of the Word. • The Liturgy of the Word is the first main part of the Mass when we hear God’s Word proclaimed. • Read pages 235-237. • Write these responses on the board and practice: o “The word of the Lord.” Thanks be to God. o Stand up for the Gospel. Alleluia! (Usually sung.) o “The Lord be with you.” And with your spirit. o “A reading from the Holy Gospel according to (Luke).” Glory to you, O Lord. (Make the Sign of the Cross with the thumb on the forehead, then the lips, then the chest.) o “The Gospel of the Lord.” Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. o “We pray to the Lord.” Lord, hear our prayer. [10 min] Mass Response Matching • Give each student either a red or blue piece of paper. The blue papers list Mass phrases, and the red papers list the responses. • Have the children stand up and try to find a student with the piece of paper that pairs with theirs. Encourage the students to read the phrases out loud to each other. • When a pair of students finds their match, give them a different piece of paper to find a new match. Note: The symbols on the cards will help match the correct response, but they should rely on speaking, not on showing their cards to find their pair. • Play a few rounds until the students become more familiar with the correct responses. [15 min] Visit Church- (this will depend on how much time the Calvalry craft takes- may need to skip this!) • Have the children pick up a copy of My Mass Book found in the black bin outside Church. • Go through pages 8-11 in the book while in Church. Practice the responses. o On page 10, explain that this prayer is called the Nicene Creed. Each pew in Church has a prayer card with the Creed on it.
