Kelvin Colquhoun Memorial Physics Scholarship

Brandon native Kelvin Colquhoun, a Physics and Mathematics major, graduated with honours from Brandon University in 1990. He married the love of his life, fellow BU graduate Melanie (nee Caryk) ’90, in 1989 and their son, Jarod, was born in 1997. Kelvin & Melanie Colquhoun at Panorama, B.C. 7 BU alumnus provides funding to bring Syrian student to BU

Russell ’65 and Corinna Lusk wanted to do something to assist Syrian refugees. Through World University Service of Canada (WUSC), and BU’s local WUSC committee, which was already sponsoring three students to come to BU in 2016, they committed to providing the funds to bring a fourth student. Originally from Daraa, a city in Syria near the border with Jordan, Rakan Al shblak is studying English literature with plans for graduate school.

Trio of athletic awards created in support of BU Bobcat athletes

BU women’s soccer team coaches Scott Haddow, Rainer Schira and Sarah Schira have established an athletic award for women’s soccer players. The Schira Haddow Award for Soccer Excellence will be awarded to team members who commit and contribute to personal, team, and program excellence.

The Cats Volleyball Club Women’s Volleyball Award has been created by the Cats Volleyball Club, a Brandon club that encourages young females to pursue their dreams and set goals for their future. 8 Legacy Giving Couple honours family with not one, but two legacy gifts

Rev. Dr. Warren McKinnon, who received his Bachelor of Arts from Brandon College in 1962, and his wife, Janice Waud Rev. So much so, that they have Janice Waud Loper Clarissa Elma McKinnon established a second legacy gift for Brandon University. Years ago Dr. McKinnon worked with BU’s Office of Advancement on pre-planning the Clarissa Elma McKinnon Scholarship in Music in honour of his late mother, who wrote music, played the piano and was the organist of their family’s church. The scholarship would be funded by a bequest in his will. In 2015 the couple decided to establish an endowment so that the scholarship could be given out now, and then increased later upon receipt of the bequest. The first scholarship was awarded in memory of Warren’s brother, Frank McKinnon in 2015.

The A. E. McKenzie Legacy Society is named in honour of Albert Edward McKenzie, the first person to leave a legacy gift to Brandon University. Given at the height of the Depression in the 1930s, his gift saved the University from certain closure.
