How would you define Flatt?

A boy perfectly normal, who studies in Barcelona and dedicates part of his free time placing stic- kers and making projects related with graffiti with a kind of crew named SATO. The name of Flat derives from Flatiron, that it is the name which I decided to use as signature.

The name comes from the famous skyscraper of New York, when I was fifteen years old I began using this name because I was hallucinated with architecture

How did all begin? How long have you been with this?

Since I began secondary school I was already observed the tags and when I was gone to Barcelona I was hallucinated with walls and other. In that time they had already deleted a large part of the mythical pieces, but around Boqueria had still rest of artists like Invader, BToy, Pez, Kenor, D*Fa- ceorThe London Police. I loved all of this, but I didnt’t know very well what was it.

A partner of the School one day brought a book of graffiti and , in this book appeared several photots of DavidtheChimp. He inspired me with his style and his harmony with the urban environment, and then I re- searched into his work and other artists. Most of the people who were spent their time in Street art were used stickers and all of them or practi- cally were flickr users. So about one week later I bought adhesive papers and I did several stickers at home.

Since then, I’ve been doing many different things and materials.

Why do you attacching stickers?

The most economic, easy and fastest way to make your imprint on the streets it is placing stickers, wi- thout doubt, said BNE in an interview few years ago-. “You can do 100 tags in one afternoon, but if you use stickers, perhaps, you can placing 500 of them and you will have fewer problems”

An interesting anecdote?

One day I was attaching stickers and doing some tags with PZL, a dutch artist during his visit and a friend of him in Barcelona. I took them a walk around the centre and we passed through a door at the born, where there are a lot of very pretty posters of people like TalToys, Rombos, BuffMons- ter and others. Practically there wasn’t place and I was doing him the step. And then the owner of the local pass with his trolley and indicates us that we board on the trolley to attach stickers above, then opened the door and came in.

Always is very interesting to see the people reacion with the fact of atta- ching stickers, sometimes the will ask for some stickers for them, other times they will ask you what do you do or what is this. A few times some boy was angry, because in general, we try to be quick and discreet.

How do you see the sticker culture? Is there really subculture?

Yes, it exists a sticker culture, it is a way that people of graffiti and other disciplines have been always used. It is posible that in Spain this culture is not very spread and not even it is excessively active.

In Netherland or Germany there are people more active and more focused in this technique. Other place is Potland, USA, where exists a very active community of different artists like Skam, TLC or Arrex among others that use like princi- pal way the sticker and what they do is enor- mous.

Do you considerer this movement like an art? What do you try to transmit with this?

Completely, art is art independently of way in which it is ex- pressed, but it will depend on the meaning that you have for you do. In other words.

In my opinión the graffiti or the Street art are a personal ex- pression in transparent manner to the society and although some people might think that the graffiti is for a closed group, the forms and language derive form popular culture and artistic culture.

How do you see the sticker culture? Is there really subculture?

I am trying to make posters of SATO, I am making very geometrical colouring pieces on the ways, with childish colours, and well, I am always hand- made stickers and ordering more to print quickly.

Farthest place where do you have gone? Where would you like see your stickers?

There are stickers of mine in Paris, California, Berlin, Londres, and probably in many places but I don’t remind all of them. When I was active in Flickr,

I was exchanged a lot of stickers with artists around the world, I was attaching their stickers and they were placing mine, but now must remain few in number.

It was fantastic to place stickers in Tokio and Paris, where stic- kerbombing is enough active and the scene graffiti it is very per- sonal and it is a leader.

Some advice for the people are beginning in this art?

To be very active, looking for references and drawing upon of the design, the illustration, the advertising and the graffiti. Also is important to practise a lot of and to be very active, for me these are the two keys, although I don’t follow them ever.

Someone who had been a reference for you?

There are many people: DavetheChimp, OLAE, Lesk, Horphe, Tomek, Saeio, FlyingFortress, BrokenFingazCrew, jonathanD- jobNkondo and many more.

But, artists I have known and with whom I have a good relations- hip are Konair, Item, Curruncho, Mufasa but above all Vegan- Bunnies, because she helped me to submerge myself comple- tely. I have a great deal of respect for her and admiration, for how she is and for her art.

I will offer Spam the interview, I met him when he came to Barcelona two or three years ago. He is an authentic "bomber", and active both to cola- borations and to provide employment to diffe- rent media. So, in addition, I hope that the inte- view chain it is extended internationally.

Stickem is an e-zine born to advertise the work of artist related to the sticker art.

There is a little particularity in the way the next interviewed is chosen. We are not who does it, is the previous artist who decides who will be the next one to be interviewed.

In this way we create an organic growing where artists move forward the interview to the next one so we don’t know where this will end!
