Out of these, six orders contain species engaged in entomophagy, but very few are being harvested effectively, leading to over-exploitation and local extinction. Examples of existing practices are given, ranging from the extremes of including insects (e.g., dipterans) in the dietary cores of many indigenous peoples to consumption of selected insects, by a wealthy few, as novelty food (e.g., caddisflies). The comparative nutritional worth of aquatic insects to the human diet and to domestic animal feed is examined. Questions are raised as to whether natural populations of aquatic insects can yield sufficient biomass to be of practicable and sustained use, whether some species can be brought into high-yield cultivation, and what are the requirements and limitations involved in achieving this? In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Molecular Phylogenetics of the Superfamily Curculionoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) Conrad Paulus Dias Trafford Gillett March 2014 Thesis abstract This thesis examines higher-level evolutionary history within the superfamily Curculionoidea, the most speciose family-level taxon, which includes beetles commonly known as weevils. This is achieved using a phylogenetic approach incorporating the largest datamatrix yet employed for weevil molecular systematics, and includes an investigation into the prospect of obtaining short phylogenetically informative amplicons from archival museum specimens. Newly obtained DNA sequence data is analysed from a variety of mitochondrial and nuclear loci, including 92 mitogenomes assembled through the approach of next-generation sequencing of pooled genomic DNA. The resulting trees are used to test previous morphological- and molecular-based hypotheses of weevil relationships and classification schemes. Mitogenomic-derived trees reveal topologies that are highly congruent with previous molecular studies, but that conflict with some morphological hypotheses. Strong nodal support strengthens inferences into the relationships amongst most weevil families and suggests that the largest family, the Curculionidae, is monophyletic, if the subfamily Platypodinae is excluded. -

Abstract: In the period 2004-2011 103 gall midge species of 37 genera were found at 63 localities in Cádiz province, south- western Spain, all of them belonging to the subfamily Cecidomyiinae. Together with 14 species found by earlier authors, the present gall midge fauna of Cádiz province includes 117 species, representing about 40% of the Iberian fauna of this group. 21 species are new to the Iberian Peninsula, whose known gall midge fauna thus includes 282 species. 11 species pre- viously known only from Portugal are here recorded from Spain for the first time. The known Spanish fauna now includes 261 gall midge species. We also found nine undescribed species that we identified only to genus level and will be described in the future. An analysis is made of the species’ frequency: Phyllodiplosis cocciferae comes out as the most frequent species in Cádiz province. The distribution types of the species are also analysed; in this connection two species stand out: Asphondylia salso- lae, a Euro-African species and the newest addition to the known gall midge fauna of the Iberian Peninsula, Spain and Europe, and Dasineura gleditchiae, the only alien species, of a Nearctic origin. Gall midge gallswere found on 27 new host plant species, some of them endemic to Spain. -

A total of 271 species are valid and 40 species, still undescribed, are identified to the generic level. Investigations were carried out at 124 localities at altitides from 250 m a.s.l. at Salurn to 2581 m a.s.l. at Schaubachhütte in the Ortler Range during the period 1999-2009. Zoogeographical analysis is based on 2150 records, of which 200 were obtained by earlier researchers and 1950 records of the present authors. Until 1996 only 24 species were known to occur in South Tyrol. We enriched the faunal list of South Tyrol by adding 287 species and the faunal list of Italy by 114 species. A list of gall midge species and a list of host plants attacked by gall midges are given. Diversity ranged from 3 to 36 species at a single locality. On average we determined 15 species to occur per locality in South Tyrol. Species number declines with increasing elevation. Density is high at 189 species per 1000 km2. South Tyrol is one of the best explored areas of the world for galls of Cecidomyiidae. Frequency of occurrence: 49 % species occur very rarely, 21 % rarely, 17 % moderately frequently, 9 % frequently, 4 % very frequently. Iteomyia capreae is the most frequently recorded species in South Tyrol.
