We report the aquatic Coleoptera (families Dryopidae, Dytiscidae, Georissidae, 10th June 2019 Gyrinidae, Heteroceridae, Hydraenidae, Hydrophilidae and Limnichidae) from North Oman, Published online: mostly based on the captures of fourteen localities sampled by the authors in 2010. Four 24th June 2019 species are described as new, all from the Al Hajar mountains, three in family Hydraenidae, Hydraena (Hydraena) naja sp. nov., Ochthebius (Ochthebius) alhajarensis sp. nov. (O. punc- tatus species group) and O. (O.) bernard sp. nov. (O. metallescens species group); and one in family Hydrophilidae, Agraphydrus elongatus sp. nov. Three of the recorded species are new to the Arabian Peninsula, Hydroglyphus farquharensis (Scott, 1912) (Dytiscidae), Hydraena (Hydraenopsis) quadricollis Wollaston, 1864 (Hydraenidae) and Enochrus (Lumetus) cf. quadrinotatus (Guillebeau, 1896) (Hydrophilidae). Commissioned by Thames Water Utilities Limited Clearwater Court Vastern Road Reading RG1 8DB CROSSNESS SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS NATURE RESERVE & SOUTHERN MARSH AQUATIC INVERTEBRATE SURVEY Report number: CPA18054 JULY 2019 Prepared by Colin Plant Associates (UK) Consultant Entomologists 30a Alexandra Rd London N8 0PP 1 1 INTRODUCTION, BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY 1.1 Introduction and background 1.1.1 On 30th May 2018 Colin Plant Associates (UK) were commissioned by Biodiversity Team Manager, Karen Sutton on behalf of Thames Water Utilities Ltd. to undertake aquatic invertebrate sampling at Crossness Sewage Treatment Works on Erith Marshes, Kent. This survey was to mirror the locations and methodology of a previous survey undertaken during autumn 2016 and spring 2017. Colin Plant Associates also undertook the aquatic invertebrate sampling of this previous survey. 1.1.2 The 2016-17 aquatic survey was commissioned with the primary objective of establishing a baseline aquatic invertebrate species inventory and to determine the quality of the aquatic habitats present across both the Nature Reserve and Southern Marsh areas of the Crossness Sewage Treatment Works. The surveyors were asked to sample at twenty-four, pre-selected sample station locations, twelve in each area. Aquatic Coleoptera and Heteroptera (beetles and true bugs) were selected as target groups. A report of the previous survey was submitted in Sept 2017 (Plant 2017). 1.1.3 During December 2017 a large-scale pollution event took place and untreated sewage escaped into a section of the Crossness Nature Reserve. The primary point of egress was Nature Reserve Sample Station 1 (NR1) though because of the connectivity of much of the waterbody network on the marsh other areas were affected. -

During a short collecting trip to Montenegro in 2014, 26 locations were sampled and 692 specimens belonging to 45 species of water beetles were collected. The following species are recorded for the first time from Montenegro: Haliplus dal- matinus J. Müller, 1900, Haliplus heydeni Wehncke, 1875, Haliplus laminatus (Schaller, 1783), Hydroporus erythrocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758), Hyphydrus anatolicus (Guignot, 1957), Melanodytes pustulatus (Rossi, 1792) and Rhantus bistriatus (Bergsträsser, 1778). The addition of these seven species brings the total of Hydradephaga known from Montenegro to 91 species. The new records are presented and an updated checklist of the Hydradephaga of Montenegro is given. Dartington Report on Beetles 2015
Report on beetles (Coleoptera) collected from the Dartington Hall Estate, 2015 by Dr Martin Luff 1. Introduction and Methods The majority of beetle recording in 2015 was concentrated on three sites and habitats: 1. Further sampling of moss on the Deer Park wall (SX794635), as mentioned in my 2014 report. This was done on two dates in March by MLL and again in October, aided by Messrs Tony Allen and Clive Turner, both experienced coleopterists. 2. Beetles associated with the decomposing body of a dead deer. The recently (accidentally) killed deer was acquired on 12th May by Mike Newby who pegged it out under wire netting in the small wood adjacent to 'Flushing Meadow', here referred to as 'Flushing Copse' (SX802625). The body was lifted regularly and beaten over a collecting tray, initially every week, then fortnightly and then monthly until early October. In addition, two pitfall traps were installed just beside the corpse, with a small amount of preservative in each. These were emptied each time the site was visited. 3. Water beetles sampled on 28th October, together with Tony Allen and Clive Turner, from the ponds and wheel-rut puddles on Berryman's Marsh (SX799615). Other work again included the contents of the nest boxes from Dartington Hills and Berrymans Marsh at the end of October, thanks to Mike Newby and his volunteer helpers. 2. Results In all, 203 beetle species were recorded in 2015, of which 85 (41.8%) were additions to the Dartington list. This increase over the 32% new in 2014 (Luff, 2015) results partly from sampling habitats (carrion, fresh-water) not previously examined. -

This article provides a compilation of the taxa introduced to science by the late Dr. Michel Brancucci, Basel, and of the taxa named in honour of him. We provide details of nomenclatorial value such as holotype depository (for species described by Michel Brancucci), page number of the original description and type locality. References of the original descriptions are given in full and the actual publication dates were thoroughly checked. Indices to all taxa complete this article and make it a searchable catalogue. Keywords. Michel Brancucci – patronyms – taxonomic publications – references of described taxa Introduction During his professional career, Dr. Michel Brancucci held many important posts. He was the curator of Coleoptera, the head of the entomological department and deputy director of the Natural History Museum of Basel, as well as president of the Swiss entomological society. Sketches of his life and work already formed part of the obituaries by BURCKHARDT (2012) and KLAUSNITZER (2012). Details on his Laos projects are given by GEISER & NAGEL (2013). These field visits to Laos were Michel Brancucci’s last major collecting trips. Earlier travels to study the beetle diversity of subtropical and tropical areas focused on Nepal and the northern provinces of Pakistan and India (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Darjeeling, Sikkim) (starting 1977 with Walter Wittmer, see BRANCUCCI 2005). A very large amount of data was available for his scientific research, owing to the extensive material he organised from his own collecting journeys as well as through purchases for the Natural History Museum of Basel. -

Out of these, six orders contain species engaged in entomophagy, but very few are being harvested effectively, leading to over-exploitation and local extinction. Examples of existing practices are given, ranging from the extremes of including insects (e.g., dipterans) in the dietary cores of many indigenous peoples to consumption of selected insects, by a wealthy few, as novelty food (e.g., caddisflies). The comparative nutritional worth of aquatic insects to the human diet and to domestic animal feed is examined. Questions are raised as to whether natural populations of aquatic insects can yield sufficient biomass to be of practicable and sustained use, whether some species can be brought into high-yield cultivation, and what are the requirements and limitations involved in achieving this?
