www.cjfl.net “For all your CJFL Information & News” The CJFL TOTAL THURSDAY Newsletter Brought to you by Issue 3 – Volume 1 "The CJFL gratefully acknowledges the support of the following Sponsors" "The Canadian Junior Football League provides the opportunity for young men aged 17 to 22 to participate in highly competitive post-high school football that is unique in Canada. The goal of the league is to foster community involvement and yield a positive environment by teaching discipline, perseverance and cooperation. The benefits of the league are strong camaraderie, national competition and life-long friends." History of True Sport In 2001, Canada’s Federal-Provincial/Territorial Ministers responsible for sport came together to bring ethics and respectful conduct back into the way Canadians play and compete. They believed that damaging practices—cheating, bullying, violence, aggressive parental behaviour, and even doping—were beginning to undermine the positive impact of community sport in Canada. The first step they took in turning back this negative tide was the signing of what is now known as the London Declaration, an unprecedented affirmation of positive sporting values and principles. The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport conducted a nationwide survey in 2002, which made clear the important role that sport plays in the lives of Canadians, as well as Canadians’ strong desire to uphold a model of sport that reflects and teaches positive values like fairness, inclusion, and excellence. In September of 2003, leading sports officials, sports champions, parents and kids from across Canada came together through a symposium entitled “The Sport We Want.” Several strong messages emerged from this gathering.

Issue 12 – January 2018 South Lions Quarterback Ethan Martin nets two Major Awards The Guelph Gryphons are getting more than just a very good quarterback; they are getting a razor-sharp student and committed individual. South Lions quarterback Ethan Martin put an exclamation mark on his high school career Monday. For the second year in succession, the Grade 12 student won the Bob Gooder trophy as high school football’s most valuable player and the Greg Anderson Memorial trophy for academics at the annual high school awards ceremony at Central secondary school in London. Read the rest of the article from gryphonfootball.com by clicking here. Guelph Gryphons Bring in CFC100, Talents from Quebec Offensive lineman Matt Adams and CFC 100 quarterback Ethan Martin have had quite the history together at London South Collegiate Institute, and the pair will write the next chapter of their career together on the University of Guelph Gryphons. Situated as the first line of defense for his quarterback, Matt Adams has been protecting Martin during his tenure as a centre and guard on the South Lions. “He’s my best friend and we are signing together,” Adams said. New Guelph Gryphon following in father's footsteps Dan Tocher was quite a receiver when he played for the University of Guelph football Gryphons. Recently, what he received was some exciting news — that his son, Jack, has signed with the Gryphons football team and that Jack will be following in his dad’s footsteps. “It’s a great feeling, just to come home, back to Guelph and sign with the team that my dad played for,” says the younger Tocher.

Although the on-field success fell well short of our goals, we believe that we are taking steps in the right direction to quickly address this and we are therefore eager to move ahead with the 2016 season. General Manager Kyle Walters and his team worked hard to significantly boost the on-field talent on February 9th in Free Agency, adding key players such as running back Andrew Harris, kicker Justin Medlock, defensive tackle Keith Shologan, and receivers Ryan Smith and Weston Dressler. We are confident that all of these CFL stars will become fan favourites as Winnipeg Blue Bombers. With a very successful FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 held at our great stadium this past June, we showed our country as well as the entire international soccer community that we have what it takes to put on a fantastic soccer tournament. In 2015, the Winnipeg Football Club also hosted one of the most positively reviewed Grey Cup events to date. The 103rd Grey Cup was more than just a sell- out; it set the bar for all Grey Cups to come.

KEY HISTORICAL MOMENTS GETTING INTO THE WIFU: 1951 TO 1954 1951 A group led by Ken Stauffer and Tiny Radar, inspired by columnist Andy Lytle, sends representatives to the off-season Western Interprovincial Football Union meetings to initiate Vancouver’s bid for a team. 1952 WIFU rejects Vancouver’s application when Winnipeg and Regina vote against the idea of a fifth team. 1953 The first annual meeting of the club, held on January 22, 1953 saw Arthur E. Mercer named as the first President. With the help of future Hall of Fame builder Vic Spencer, Vancouver was granted a conditional franchise on the requirements of a 15,000 seat stadium, selling 6,500 season tickets and providing guaranteed travel expenses of the visiting teams. The Lions hire their first head coach Annis Stukus who begins to scout for players without the aid of an expansion draft. 1953 Water boy and future club GM, President and Hall of Famer Bob Ackles is hired. 1954 Empire Stadium opens in time for the 1954 British Empire Games and the Lions’ inaugural season in the WIFU. The Lions first-ever game is a 22-0 pre-season loss to Montreal before 19,371 spectators. 1954 The Lions open at home on August 28, 1954 against Winnipeg and their first ever TD comes a minute before half-time as By Bailey crashes over from a yard out to give BC a 5-1 lead. The Bombers fought back however with a TD to level the score. Two 4th quarter singles eventually gave Winnipeg the victory by an 8-6 count.

  • Yonkers Does Away with the Passing Lane but Is It the Right Move to Drive Handle? by Brett Sturman
Friday, December 15, 2017 Yonkers does away with the passing lane But is it the right move to drive handle? by Brett Sturman In today?s HRU Stakes scheduling, the secret to life and curing tie-up page 9 Bird Parker beat Bold Eagle page 11 Mike Woebkenberg: A non-stop promotional idea machine page 12 Devious Man joins Blue Chip stallion roster page 14 One group to oversee racing in Ontario page 14 Little joins Big M broadcast crew page 16 Cherry buy into Heston Blue Chip page 17 Cammie Haughton made news yesterday on the harness racing podcast Post Time with Mike and Mike, when he announced that that Yonkers will be doing away with its homestretch passing lane. Pending approval from the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC), the change is scheduled to take effect when Yonkers begins its 2018 racing season on Sunday, Jan. 7. Haughton was recently appointed last month as the director of racing at Yonkers (full story here), and one of his primary responsibilities is to improve handle. Haughton said Thursday regarding the removal of the passing lane, ?We?re going back to basics? These guys (drivers) are going to pull. They?re not going to sit in there and wait for the passing lane and go on through.? The decision to get rid of the passing lane at Yonkers seems to be more well received than not in the usual social media circles. But the question becomes, will doing away with the passing lane improve the Yonkers product and in turn, the tracks handle? By any objective account, the style of racing at Yonkers leaves much to be desired.
