The team from southern Alberta dominated their northern coun- terparts in Red Deer, making it 2 years in a row. Will the south complete the hat trick in 2011? GM Charbonneau wins BATB th 5 Edmonton International GM Magesh Panchanathan overpowered the field in Edmonton this summer, winning 8 out of 9 games with only one draw, easily taking 1st. This set a new record for most points in the tourna- ment. GM Jesse Kraai has been to every Edmonton International and was all alone in 2nd. Richard Wang put in the best performance by an Albertan. The internet audience was the largest to view an Alberta event this year. Hats off to the organizers for putting on an excellent event. Calgary International Chess Classic Lawrence Day made the observation that many of the players in Calgary this year had played in at least one tournament at Lone Pine. This was certainly the strongest Calgary International and it was also the strongest tournament in Alberta this year. GM Mikhalevski was the class of the field taking clear 1st, but not without taking some blows on the way. Calgary’s Eric Hansen secured his 3rd and final IM norm this year. He secured the norm on his 18th birthday! Alberta Chess Report ● Summer 2010 Page 2 ALBERTA CHESS REPORT INSIDE THIS ISSUE The ACR is published every two months. Paperback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, Battle of Alberta: A Century of Hockey's Greatest Rivalry, Steven Sandor, Alberta has long been a big part of the frantic Canadian hockey scene, and even before Alberta became a province in 1905, the intense hockey rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton was in full swing. In "The Battle of Alberta", the rough-and-tumble relationship between these two hockey hotbeds is presented in all its colourful glory. The tussle got its start in 1895 when an all-star team from Calgary journeyed to Edmonton to take on the mighty Thistles and a team of Northwest Mounted Police pucksters. Calgary came away victorious; Edmonton vowed revenge, and thus began a long procession of battling teams in both cities. Illustrated with archival photographs of the many teams and players from the far and near past, hockey fans throughout Alberta and across Canada will delight in this wonderful history of hockey's longest and greatest rivalry. The compilation of the All-America roster was supervised by a panel of analysts working in large part with the historical records contained in the files of the Dr. Baker Football Information Service. The roster consists of only those players who were first-team selections on one or more of the All-America teams that were selected for the national audience and received nationwide circulation. Not included are the thousands of players who received mention on All-America second or third teams, nor the numerous others who were selected by newspapers or agencies with circulations that were not primarily national and with viewpoints, therefore, that were not normally nationwide in scope. The following chart indicates, by year (in left column), which national media and organizations selected All-America teams. Russ Jackson on CFL.Ca Comments That “Good Quarterbacks Like Russ Jackson Are a Special Kind

Devon Forbes Mathew Neal PED 201 Prof. Byl March 30 th , 2009 A Biography of Russell Stanley Jackson Displaying one of the finest athletes representing Canada is Russell “Russ” Stanley Jackson. On the day of July 28 th , 1936 in Hamilton, Ontario comes a child who is to be recognized as one of the greatest contributors to genuine passion for the love of athletics and sportsmanship both on and off the playing field. Jackson’s early life truly defined what his passion was: sports. Jackson excelled as an athlete in his careers in basketball, hockey, and baseball. Many spectators that watched Jackson on the playing field often came to the conclusion that as his skill level rose, so did the fortunes of his fellow players. Jackson was truly a beneficial addition to any team he took part in. Russ played several sports and loved the competition involved in it. Baseball was a large part of his life from early childhood to adolescence. Jackson was involved in some semi‐pro baseball in Hamilton for a period of time; however, he grew out of it. Jackson began to develop a passion for football, yet his father felt that there was no insurance after the football season ended. Instead, he felt academics were a priority. Despite Jackson’s father’s disagreement with playing football during school, Russ got his neighbour to sign the permission to play (Canadian Heroes with Canada Heroes). Jackson had the intent of playing defensive back and dominated playing in the senior level while he, himself, was still a junior.

KEY HISTORICAL MOMENTS GETTING INTO THE WIFU: 1951 TO 1954 1951 A group led by Ken Stauffer and Tiny Radar, inspired by columnist Andy Lytle, sends representatives to the off-season Western Interprovincial Football Union meetings to initiate Vancouver’s bid for a team. 1952 WIFU rejects Vancouver’s application when Winnipeg and Regina vote against the idea of a fifth team. 1953 The first annual meeting of the club, held on January 22, 1953 saw Arthur E. Mercer named as the first President. With the help of future Hall of Fame builder Vic Spencer, Vancouver was granted a conditional franchise on the requirements of a 15,000 seat stadium, selling 6,500 season tickets and providing guaranteed travel expenses of the visiting teams. The Lions hire their first head coach Annis Stukus who begins to scout for players without the aid of an expansion draft. 1953 Water boy and future club GM, President and Hall of Famer Bob Ackles is hired. 1954 Empire Stadium opens in time for the 1954 British Empire Games and the Lions’ inaugural season in the WIFU. The Lions first-ever game is a 22-0 pre-season loss to Montreal before 19,371 spectators. 1954 The Lions open at home on August 28, 1954 against Winnipeg and their first ever TD comes a minute before half-time as By Bailey crashes over from a yard out to give BC a 5-1 lead. The Bombers fought back however with a TD to level the score. Two 4th quarter singles eventually gave Winnipeg the victory by an 8-6 count.
