COACHING STAFF BLAKE NILL Head Coach

Blake Nill was appointed the fifth Head Coach in Dinos history on Feb. 23, 2006.

An alumnus of the University of Calgary, Blake played football for the Dinos from 1980 through 1982 before turning professional with in 1983 after being selected 19th overall in the CFL draft. He played in the CFL from 1983‐88 with Montreal, Hamilton and .

A native of Hanna, Alberta, Nill has 25 years of football experience as an and as a coach.

Blake joined the Dinos after coaching at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, N.S. While coaching the Saint Mary’s Huskies he posted a regular season record of 49 wins and 15 losses (77%) and post‐season record of 12 wins and five losses (71%). During that time the Huskies were Vanier Cup Champions in 2001 and 2002 and were finalists on two other occasions. He coached the Huskies to a record six consecutive Atlantic University Sport Championships (1999‐2004).

Nill won the Frank Tindall Trophy as Canadian Interuniversity Sport Coach of the Year in 1999 and was a finalist in 2000, 2001, and 2003.

He is actively involved in the Canadian University Football Coaches Association (CUFCA), serving as President for several seasons. Blake was instrumental in the implementation of the interlocking schedule between the AUS and the Quebec conference.

Nill started his coaching career in August 1992 as the Defensive Coordinator for St. Francis Xavier, a position he held until joining Saint Mary’s in February 1998. From April 1990 through July 1992 Nill served as a youth care worker in Montreal and Calgary, with the Shawbridge Youth Centre and the Alberta Solicitor General, respectively.

Nill took undergraduate courses at the University of Calgary in both Physical Education and Economics graduating with Bachelor of Arts degree from in 1989. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Education. In addition, Blake has attained his Level III National Coaching Certification (NCCP).

Blake served as a guest coach with the in 1997 and 1998, the Renegades in 2002 and 2003, and the Edmonton Eskimos in 2007. In addition he served as a member of the coaching staff for the All‐Time UC Dinos Canadian Under‐19 team at the Global World Football Challenge held in conjunction with Super Bowl XLI in Florida in January 2007 and coached the linebackers for Team Canada’s entry at the IFAF World Junior Football Coaches Football Championships in Canton, Ohio in July 2009. GODINOS.COM 2 2009 UC DINOS FOOTBALL VANIER CUP CHAMPIONS 1983, 1985, 1988, 1995 JOHN STEVENS Head Assistant Coach / Defensive Coordinator John joined the Dinos in April 2003 as the full‐time assistant coach, handling several administrative duties with the team in addition to his role as Defensive Coordinator.

Stevens began his coaching career in Hull, Massachusetts serving as a junior varsity high school coach from 1980 to 1982. He returned to Canada in 1983 coaching the Montreal Junior Concordes for two years while teaching high school. He was defensive line coach for McGill University in 1986.

Stevens joined St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S. in 1986 as an assistant coach, becoming head coach in 1992 and serving in that position for ten years. He coached the X‐Men to a Vanier Cup appearance in 1996, losing to Saskatchewan. In 1997 he was named CIS Coach of the Year and was 3M Coach of the Year. He was named Atlantic University Sport Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1997 and on three occasions coached the X‐Men to the AUS final. He also served as President of the Canadian University Football Coaches Association (CUFCA) for two years.

During his tenure at StFX he also served as both offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator.

In addition to his varsity coaching experience, John has been a guest coach at both the and Calgary Stampeders training camps. He has completed his National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level IV Certification.

A native of Quincy, Massachusetts, John graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education in 1979 from Acadia University. He was a three‐time AUS all‐star defensive lineman. In 1979 he was Atlantic Bowl MVP and a member of Acadia’s Vanier Cup championship team.

John was a member of the coaching staff for the CIS East‐West Bowl for the West team in 2004, 2005, and 2007. In August 2008, John was a guest coach at the Indianapolis Colts’ NFL training camp.

Stevens and his wife Poly have two daughters, Kristyn and Jessica.

GREG VAVRA Offensive Coordinator

A graduate of the University of Calgary degrees in commerce and law, Greg returned to the Dinos’ coaching staff in 2006, serving as Offensive Coordinator.

Vavra is no stranger to the Dinos football program. He quarterbacked the Dinos to their first Vanier Cup in 1983 and became the first University of Calgary player to win the Trophy as the most outstanding player in Canadian . He was the Canada West all‐star from 1980 to 1983 and was the All‐Canadian quarterback in 1983.

Vavra is the school’s all‐time leading passer, still holds the record for the longest in school history (52 yards), and is the only Dinos football player to have his (17) retired. He was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame with the inaugural class in 1995.

After graduating from the University of Calgary, Greg played in the League for five seasons with the Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Eskimos, and BC Lions before retiring to pursue his law degree and enter the private sector in the oil and gas industry.

Greg is currently employed in the oil and gas industry in Calgary. He is active in the Dinos Fifth Quarter Alumni Association and enters his sixth season as part of the coaching staff.
