Sarro is a hulking halfback BY JEFF MACKINNON entering his fourth and possibly final year with the Dinos football team, with graduation looming. Ghali is a second-year guard with the university’s women’s basketball squad. What both have in common, however, is that the school’s athletic department views them as leaders. They are among 26 student-athletes taking part in the inaugural class of Dinos LEAD program, which consists of three full-day workshops designed to enhance leadership skills. “Taking part in the LEAD program was a no-brainer,” says Ghali, a kinesiology student who is planning for a career in either pediatrics or sports medicine. “I always want to get better and I always want to learn about leadership techniques. (My first year) I noticed that there are di"erent kinds of leaders and I want to be a leader that can speak to everyone di"erently and really get the team on the same page even if there are di"erent ways to do that.” The LEAD program began with a one-day seminar in April and continues with a second session in September. The final meeting is in December. The program is the brainchild of Dinos director of athletics Ron Wuotila and was made possible through a donation by Doug and Lois Mitchell and the Legacy Sports Fund.

The Calgary Dinosaurs took their second national championship in three years, this time defeating Western 25-6 for the Vanier Cup. A tough Calgary defence led by Presidents’ Trophy winner Darcy Kopp held Western to only 38 yards rushing. Western’s Steve Samways compensated with a record 41 passing attempts for 279 yards, but a first quarter TD was all the Mustangs could muster. Calgary’s Elio Geremia was selected o"ensive player of the game based on his one touchdown, 104 yards rushing and two catches for 22 yards. www.zerodraftcalgary.com

With Saint Mary’s No. 1 quarterback declared medically unfit to play, Bill Scollard, the Huskies’ top wide receiver was pressed into action as a replacement for winner, Chris Flynn. For 52 minutes Scollard, who com- pleted 27 of 47 attempts (a Vanier Cup record), kept the Huskies in the game against the University of Calgary Dino- saurs. However, with eight minutes left to play the Huskies had their hopes dashed when Dave Heaton of the Dinosaurs grabbed an interception and took it 75 yards for a Calgary touchdown and a 38- 23 lead. Momentum switched to the Dinos who went on to add two more touchdowns for a 52-23 victory and their third Vanier Cup victory in six years.

1995

The Dinosaurs put together a 54-24 victory over the defending champion . Calgary’s receiver Don Blair put on quite a show by breaking two Vanier Cup records with 24 points and four touchdowns. Following a field goal by Calgary’s Brian Mlachak, the Dinos took the lead and would not relinquish when Blair caught a 13-yard TD from starting QB, Jason Assen. Calgary took a 26-10 lead at the half and then put it away in the third quarter scoring majors on each of their three possessions. In the end Calgary recorded the longest field goal, 50 yards, by Mlachak, a record seven touchdowns and 54 points, in addition to the Blair marks.
