G.D. Searle and Company began marketing Enovid [4] as a contraceptive in 1960. The technology was created by the joint efforts of many individuals and organizations, including Margaret Sanger, Katharine McCormick [6], Gregory Pincus, John Rock, Syntex [7], S.A. Laboratories, and G.D. Searle and Company Laboratories. Although there were many pieces and contributors to the final product, it was first conceived of and created by Gregory Pincus and Margaret Sanger through the Worcester Foundation in Worcester, Massachusetts, and was distributed by Searle, located in Chicago. This technology is important to the history of embryology [8] because it changed the way people viewed birth control [5] and revolutionized women’s birth control [5] methods. There is an extensive literature on the cultural and societal effects of the pill; for example, the effect it had on women’s health care, and how it changed perceptions of female sexuality. The pill was created in response to the problems off amily planning [9] and population control. The first discussions of developing the pill occurred after the depression, when poverty was a serious problem throughout the nation. Having smaller families and having more resources for each child was seen as a strategy to combat poverty. During this time period the eugenics movement [10], which encouraged reproduction by particular individuals and discouraged reproduction by others, was also very influential on Sanger and the development of the pill. -

BJERKNES – LIKE FATHER – LIKE SON By Doria B. Grimes U.S. Dept. of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Central Library [email protected] A comparison of the lives of the Bjerknes family of researchers – Carl Anton (1825- 1903), Vilhelm (1862-1951), and Jakob (1897-1975) reveal unique parallelisms that are significant to the history of meteorology and to this great family legacy of scholars. Some of these parallelisms were caused by international events, while others were by personal choice. In the following presentation, I will four notable occurrences: 1) personal decisions to postpone scholarship to support a father’s research 2) relocations due to international conflicts 3) establishment of world renowned schools of meteorology and 4) funding from the Carnegie Institute of Washington. 1. Personal Choice Both Vilhelm and Jakob willingly postponed their education and personal research interests in order to support their respective father’s scientific investigations. Vilhelm During the 1980’s and 1880’s Carl Anton Bjerknes worked in relative isolation on hydrodynamic analogies. In 1882, Carl represented Norway at the Paris International Electric Exhibition where he gained international recognition on his electromagnetic theory and analogies which was successfully demonstrated by his son, Vilhelm. Vilhelm continued to assist his father until 1889, when at the age of 27 he “had to get away … to develop his own skills and career opportunities.”1 Vilhelm earned a Norwegian Doctorate in 1892 at the age of 30. He preferred electromagnetic wave studies above his father’s interest in hydrodynamic theory. Through Carl Anton’s influence, a position was created at the Stockholm H»gskola. -

MAREN HE IDEAS AND iDEALS of the nineteenth century are Tembodied in many men and women born in late Victo- rian times, and so live on to the present. In this tradition was Eli Kennedy Marshall, Jr., who served the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for thirty-five years, first as professor of physiology, then of pharmacology and experi- mental therapeutics. Now near the end of our own century, it is fitting to review and celebrate the life of a scientist who made giant strides toward the twenty-first. Marshall was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 2, 1889. His father's family came from England in the early part of the century. His paternal grandmother, Susan, was the daughter of Eli Kennerly, a Virginian who migrated to South Carolina. His mother's family was more varied. One side of her family was English—his merchant grandfather (Brown) was a descendant of the Rev. Samuel Andrew, a founder of Yale, and George Treat, one-time governor of Connecticut. His maternal grandmother (Beckmann) ap- peared more exotic; Marshall's notes say her family included members of German, French, and Russian descent. -

ETLEV WULF BRONK was born in 1897 in New York City, D where his father, Mitchell Bronk, was pastor of the Ascen- sion Baptist Church at 160th Street and Park Avenue. Det received his unusual Christian names through his mother, Marie Wulf, whose father was Detlev Wulf, a businessman in New York City. The family moved to Bayonne, New Jersey in 1900, where his sister, Isabelle, was born in 1903. His later youth (1912-1919) was spent in Troy, New York in the same region of the state where his forebears had lived for many years. Detlev Bronk is a direct descendant of Mattheus Brunck, a "smith" from the Rhenish Palatinate, who came to West Camp, on the Hud- son River, in 1710. A grandson of Mattheus, Abraham, settled about 1797 on a farm near Duanesburg, Schenectady county, which became known as "the Bronk Place." Det's grandfather, Abram Bronk, grew up in Florida, New York. In nearby Man- chester lived Cynthia Brewster, a descendant of the Elder William Brewster of the Mayflower Colony. Abram and Cynthia were married in 1856 after a prolonged courtship, much of it carried on by letter via packets to and from California. -

Author: Fredrik Albritton Jonsson Title: Coal Futures 1789-1884 Abstract: Long before William Stanley Jevons’ The Coal Question (1865), mining engineers and natural historians sought to calculate the extent of the British coal reserves. Centennial and millennial time scales entered Victorian politics in the 1830s through debates on coal exhaustion. Coal husbandry was theorized by geologists and political economists as a problem of intergenerational equity and became the subject of policy in the case of coal tariffs. After 1870, John Ruskin developed a vision of adverse anthropogenic climate change, linked to deforestation, agriculture, glacial contraction, and coal use. In short, politicians, intellectuals, and scientists increasingly began to see industrial Britain as a carbon society, subject to unprecedented environmental pressures. Initially regarded by NSF as merely a tool to support the more established sciences, computer science rapidly became institutionalized in university departments and degree programs in the early 1960s, and NSF responded by creating an Office of Computing Activities in 1967 to fund research and education as well as facilities. Since funding is essential to the practice of science as well as a signifier of disciplinary power and status, acquiring a dedicated government funding stream was a remarkable coup for such a young field. -

ONE The Fabric of a Vision ur story begins at the end of the nineteenth century in the twilight Oyears of the theory of the “ether”: a theory of space, time, and mat- ter, which was soon to be superseded by Einstein’s theory of relativity and by the theory of quantum mechanics. A Norwegian scientist made a remarkable discovery while working on the ether theory, a discovery that was to lead to a new beginning in meteorology. A Phoenix Arises A pensive, thirty- six- year- old Vilhelm Bjerknes peered through a quarter- pane of his window at a city shrouded by a sky as gray as lead. It was a bitterly cold afternoon in November 1898 and Stockholm was pre- paring itself for a taste of winter. Snow had been falling gently since early morning, but a strengthening northerly wind began to whisk the flurries into great billows that obliterated the skyline. We may imagine Bjerknes returning to the fireside with anticipation of the warmth keeping the chill at bay, relaxing in a chair, and allowing his thoughts to wander. As the fire began to roar and the blizzard strengthened, his growing sense of physical comfort was accompanied by a feeling of inner contentment: he was at one with the world. However, this wasn’t just the simple plea- sure that comes from finding sanctuary from the winter’s rage; it was deeper and much more profound. Bjerknes gazed at a spark as it flickered and swirled up the chimney. The tiny cinder disappeared from view, carried into the even greater swirl of the wind and snow outside. -
