G.D. Searle and Company began marketing Enovid [4] as a contraceptive in 1960. The technology was created by the joint efforts of many individuals and organizations, including Margaret Sanger, Katharine McCormick [6], Gregory Pincus, John Rock, Syntex [7], S.A. Laboratories, and G.D. Searle and Company Laboratories. Although there were many pieces and contributors to the final product, it was first conceived of and created by Gregory Pincus and Margaret Sanger through the Worcester Foundation in Worcester, Massachusetts, and was distributed by Searle, located in Chicago. This technology is important to the history of embryology [8] because it changed the way people viewed birth control [5] and revolutionized women’s birth control [5] methods. There is an extensive literature on the cultural and societal effects of the pill; for example, the effect it had on women’s health care, and how it changed perceptions of female sexuality. The pill was created in response to the problems off amily planning [9] and population control. The first discussions of developing the pill occurred after the depression, when poverty was a serious problem throughout the nation. Used with permission. 2 Natural Family Planning Compliance and Natural Family Planning The importance of user compliance on the effectiveness of natural family planning programs is the topic of a review published by a research group from the University of Federico II of Naples, School of Medicine.(1) The main cause of NFP method failure, according to the authors, is either a conscious departure from the rules of the various NFP methods or the erroneous application of the rules. In addition, they also stated that methods of NFP have relatively high discontinuation rates. A reason for discontinuation and lack of compliance they postulate is that the rules of NFP might be too demanding (i.e., rules for pregnancy avoidance can average 14-15 days each cycle). Continuation rates reviewed from 13 published studies (1981-1997) ranged from a low of 4.2% over a 12 month period to a high of 73.7%.

Keywords: Contraception [2] Reproductive rights [3] Catholicism [4] Biography [5] Born on 24 March 1890 in Marlborough, Massachusetts, to Ann and Frank Rock,J ohn Charles Rock [6] was both a devout Catholic and one of the leading investigators involved in the development of the first oral contraceptive pill [7]. In 1925 he married Anna Thorndike, with whom he later had five children. He spent over thirty years of his career as a clinical professor of obstetrics at Harvard Medical School [8], and in 1964 the Center for Population Studies of the Harvard School of Public Health established the John Rock Professorship. As a member of the Catholic Church, his faith played an intriguing role in his involvement with the development of the birth control [9] pill, which challenged previous Catholic thought on contraception [10]. Rock’s unique position as a Catholic, a physician, and researcher of human reproduction sparked both interest and controversy within the Church as well as popular society more generally, with Life, Time, and Newsweek magazines all devoting feature articles to Rock. In 1912, when he returned from a trip to South America after winning an essay contest, Rock applied to Harvard College [11]. He graduated in 1915 after three years of undergraduate work and went on to receive a medical degree from Harvard Medical School [8] in 1918 with the intention of pursuing a career inn eurology [12], only to change his interest to reproduction soon after.

    A Twenty-Year History (1958-1978) of Contraception and Abortion as Experienced by the Catholic Medical Association Richard J. Fehring* ABSTRACT: This paper is an historical analysis of the issues of contraception and abortion as presented through the focus and lens of articles in The Linacre Quarterly, the official journal of the Catholic Medical Association (CMA). The twenty-year history includes the ten years before and after the pivotal papal encyclical Humanae vitae (HV). The articles show the clear link between the issues of contraception and abortion and how these issues led to the decline of the Federation of the Catholic Physician Guilds (the precursor of the CMA in the United States). It was a decline that, I propose, lessened opposition to liberalized abortion laws. There is, however, a new and revised CMA that has been built on a faithful and prolife membership of physicians and other health professionals. LTHOUGH MANY PRO-LIFE LEADERS and pro-life organizations do not see the connection between contraception and abortion, or do not wish Ato deal with this issue, the link is rather apparent. Pope John Paul II called abortion and contraception the fruits of the same tree.1 Research also has * Richard J. GREEP HE LIFE WORK OF Min Chueh Chang centered on a dis- Tcrete portion of the mammalian reproduction process, the part that begins with the existence of male and female free living gametes and ends with their successful union, fertilization. In this sphere Chang was a world leader, a giant of his time. That, however, is only part of the fame that is conjured up by the mention of his name. Actually, Chang is best known in the public mind for his work on the development of the oral contraceptive, “the Pill.” The lat- ter benefited millions of women and fomented a social/ sexual revolution. This freeing of the sexual act from the threat of conception led to major changes in the way men and women live together. To bring these two related but very different aspects of Chang’s research into perspective, it is important to note that of his forty-five years in research only five (1951 through 1956) were spent in proving the effectiveness of certain steroids in controlling fertility in laboratory mammals when administered orally. This was his greatest contribution in pragmatic terms.

A historic accomplishment, it is the only medical advancement so significant that it just needs to be called “the pill.” Women’s rights movements of the mid-twentieth century and the demand for a way for women to avoid repeated unwanted pregnancy led to the development of the first oral contraceptive pill. This revolutionary medicine was pioneered by some of the brightest minds of the twentieth century, and after difficult human trials and struggles with backlash and laws against contraception, the first birth control pill, called Enovid, was finally approved by the Food and Drug Administration, a triumph in women’s rights. The contraceptive pill has had a monumental effect on the lives of women all over the world, and the changes that the birth control pill has caused continue to benefit women today. The modern birth control pill evolved from Enovid, the first oral contraceptive pill approved by the FDA in 1960. Today, there are hundreds of different brands of birth control pills that all work similarly to the original pill.1 With some exceptions, the pill works by releasing a combination of certain hormones, including progesterone and estrogen. It maintains women’s menstrual cycles, keeping them on a consistent twenty-eight day cycle. Women take one pill every day for three weeks.

Two formidable women, Margaret Sanger and Katherine McCormick, were the instigators and facilitators; Gregory Pincus, Min Chang, Russell Marker, Carl Djerassi and Frank Colton the scientists and John Rock, Celso Garcia and Edris Rice-Wray the clinicians. Their contribution to the development of the pill and the early evolution of the birth control movement will be outlined. The pill stimulated the Catholic Church to confront its position on contraception, and in 1963 the Pontifical Commission on Birth Control was established to advise the Pope. The recommendations of the commission and the Pope’s response will be discussed. MARGARET SANGER Margaret Sanger (1879 – 1966) was the most influential person in the campaign for women’s sexual and reproductive freedom in North America during the first half of the 20th century.
