  • ARE SUPER TRAINERS GOOD OR BAD for the SPORT? by Chris Mcgrath Bill Finley Has Part II of His Two-Part Series on “Super Trainers” Dominating the Game of Racing
THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 2018 LETTER FROM ASCOT: HEROES AND GOATS ARE SUPER TRAINERS GOOD by Dave Johnson OR BAD FOR THE SPORT? When I heard the Ascot track announcer say, "Tony Curtis is heading to the stalls," it took me a while to put two and two together. "I thought Tony Curtis was dead," the guy next to me in the press box muttered. I was sure he was, too. But then I realized the announcer was talking about #16 in Wednesday's G2 Royal Hunt Cup Handicap. For those of you who always complain about short fields and favorites with ever blinking low odds, consider the fact that 32 were entered for this race today, and 30 ran. They needed three starting gates for the straight-on one-mile test. The favorite was 7-1. TUESDAY, 26 JUNE 2018 There was never going to be any difficulty in their first season, PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: SEA THE when Sea The Stars was priced at i85,000 and Frankel at ,125,000 and they respectively covered 136 and 131 mares. The STARS & CRYSTAL OCEAN problem is that there isn't an endless supply of breeders prepared to invest heavily in untried but high-priced stallions and events showed that not even Sea The Stars and Frankel were immune to the fluctuating demand that affects so many young stallions in their first four seasons. It now seems hard to believe that Sea The Stars's totals in those first four years were 136, 83, 138 and 82 mares. Frankel's figures were 131, 128, 104 and 105. Perhaps Frankel's arrival as a stallion in 2013 was partly to blame for Sea The Stars's book falling to 82 mares, but their main problem was that these unproven horses were competing against stallions whose ability to sire top performers had been proven time after time. • Stradivarius Answers Gold Cup Call Cont
FRIDAY, 22 JUNE 2018 IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL STRADIVARIUS ANSWERS By Chris McGrath GOLD CUP CALL The longest day, and in more ways than one. On the two previous mornings, the only racegoers on the train had been murmuring to each other over the rustle of their newspapers, trying not to feel too conspicuous in their finery among the stolid and resentful commuters. Yesterday, the same service was crammed with the noisy, bibulous vanguard of Ladies' Day, launching a fusillade of corks in ominous syncopation with the safety-catch clicking of cans. Some, plainly, were setting impossible early fractions. By the time the shadows of the solstice evening began to lengthen, they had been given an edifying lesson in how to manage a far more arduous test of stamina. And not just by the three magnificent horses who, after two and a half miles, produced a Gold Cup very nearly as thrilling as the one that last year qualified as the race of the British season.
