4 Dear Breeders,
2020 marks the 60th anniversary of His Highness the Aga Khan taking responsibility for the family thoroughbred enterprise. This breeding and racing activity have evolved and progressed over the decades and the Aga Khan Studs now boast high-class commercial stallions, prestigious maternal lines, and successful racehorses that have gathered more than 150 Group 1 victories.
The Aga Khan Studs flagship sires, Sea The Stars and Siyouni, are members of the elite ranks of European stallions and both enjoyed further Classic glory in 2019. Gilltown Stud’s Sea The Stars won a second consecutive Irish Oaks thanks to the exceptional Star Catcher, also winner of the Prix Vermeille and British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, while Crystal Ocean shared Longines World’s Best Racehorse honours with Enable and Waldgeist, and champion stayer Stradivarius recorded a streak of ten consecutive races.
Haras de Bonneval resident Siyouni was again crowned leading French-based sire. His principal representative was Pat Downes Prix du Jockey Club hero and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe third Sottsass, and 2018 Prix de Diane winner Laurens brought her Manager, Irish Studs Group 1 score up to six with victory in the Prix Rothschild during August.
The two sires also rewarded breeders in the sales ring, with their progeny attracting great interest at premier auctions across Europe, and notably a new record for a yearling by Siyouni which sold for a bid of 1.3 million Guineas during Tattersalls Book 1.
The first yearlings by Sea The Stars’ dual Derby winning son Harzand, and the blue-blooded Dariyan, met with enthusiasm from breeders and investors and their debuts are eagerly anticipated on the track in 2020. Zarak, the Group 1 winning son of Zarkava and Dubawi, is the latest recruit to ensure the continuity of the Aga Khan Studs. The most recent in an illustrious bloodline stretching back to Petite Etoile and Mumtaz Mahal, his first foals were heralded in 2019.
The Aga Khan Studs would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to breeders for your support. We are proud to share our success with you all and we look forward to perpetuating our traditions together. Georges Rimaud Pat Downes & Georges Rimaud Manager, French Studs

71 YEARS 60OF BREEDING AND RACING THE sudden death of Prince Aly Khan in May 1960 might have meant the end of a racing and breeding empire that had known extraordinary success over almost 40 years.
His son and heir, the 23-year-old fourth Aga Khan, had played no part in the business and seemed ill-prepared for the responsibility of maintaining the operation that his grandfather, the third Aga Khan, had founded in the early 1920s.
But if there were serious thoughts of quitting the sport, they were probably extinguished within the first three months of the horses in training starting to run in the young Aga Khan’s name. The victories of Charlottesville in the Prix du Jockey Club and Grand Prix de Paris, Sheshoon in the Ascot Gold Cup and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Petite Etoile in the Coronation Cup, and Venture in the St James’s Palace and Sussex Stakes made it plain that the ‘family firm’ was a flourishing concern.
The Aga Khan had no horses at the start of that season; at its end he was leading owner in France. A new era had begun, and 60 years later we are bound to recognise that his achievements surpass by far those of his father and grandfather.
I was present when Silver Shark, the first outstanding runner bred and raced by the Aga Khan, scored a landmark triumph as a two-year-old in the 1965 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp, and I have lost count of the big race victories I have witnessed since then. The Aga Khan Studs have featured prominently throughout my professional career, and such has been the regularity of their successes that I have written more words in tribute to their products than those of any other breeding operation. Haras de Bonneval. Success Breeds Success Breeds Success Breeds Success Breeds Success Breeds Success Key to the rise of the Aga Khan Studs to unprecedented heights has been the private purchase of the entire bloodstock holdings of a number of prominent studs, beginning in the late 1970s with those developed over long periods by Marcel Boussac and François Dupré. Those acquisitions and the more recent examples involving the stock of Jean-Luc Lagardère and Brook Holliday effectively brought into the fold the accumulated wisdom of breeders who had competed at the top level over several generations.
Armed with such quality stock, inherited and imported, the Aga Khan could always expect to produce top-class runners, so it is no surprise that he has bred European Pattern winners in every crop since 1975.
The record shows that the colours of both Aga Khans have been carried to victory in the Epsom Derby on five occasions. But the Aga Khan III bred only three of his winners, while his grandson bred all five of his – and all of them doubled up in the Irish Derby as well.
Shergar, Shahrastani and Kahyasi descended from the inherited families, while Sinndar and Harzand had their roots in Boussac and Holliday families respectively.
There is so much to admire about a breeding operation that is constantly experimenting, utilising the services of a wide selection of stallions for its mares, who are rarely served by the same horse twice. It is all about the quest for the best, and because there must always be sales to keep the business at a manageable level, other breeders can tap into its active families and reap rich rewards.
The first 60 years have been great. But we may be sure that there are further triumphs to come.
