EDITORS’ NOTE BY: GREG ARMSTRONG & JOE SHEAMER Dear der RÜCKSPIEGEL Readers,

The temperature has decided to get serious this summer. Extreme heat is detrimental to our cars and our brains. We’re proof of heat related brain damage. Don’t be like us. Please do your best to keep your cars and your brains cool during this heat wave.

We are delighted to report that a few members immediately answered our call to contribute content for the newsletter. Dave Zimmerman is starting his current contributor tenure with his report from the successful and entertaining New Member Family Picnic Sunday, July 14. We hear that the party at the Zimmerman’s this month may involve a grudge match in Corn hole. Place your bets on the winners soon. Since Dave is an integral part of the hosting committee, we would like someone else to volunteer to provide photos from the event. That will allow Dave to focus all of his attention on keeping the party going, and winning at Corn hole. If you’re thinking about applying for the position but afraid you’ll be denied, this isn’t high school anymore; all applicants are accepted. We do not, however, supply participation ribbons. Those who are desperate for a cool trophy should consider attending Parade 2020, if you didn’t get a trophy or attend this year’s.

Check the calendar for the next fun MVR event and make a plan to attend. We’ll see you there! As always, thank you for reading, and stay cool.

NEW MEMBER / FAMILY PICNIC BY: DAVE ZIMMERMAN

Nearly 25 MVR members, and a few children and grandchildren, made it to our annual New Member Picnic on Sunday afternoon, July 14. I say annual because this was our second one at Secor Metropark, but I’m not sure how many previous ones may have been held at other locations? The weather was perfect, with sunshine and 90 degree temperatures, and a nice breeze and plenty of shade from the shelter house and trees surrounding the Lone Oak area of the park.

The meal got off to a slightly late start. Seems like all were prepared with the meat to be cooked, the charcoal, and the lighter fluid, but somehow no one seemed to have a match? I guess this “no smoking” thing is really working! After a quick trip home for some matches, things were finally “cooking.” Hats off to Barney Stewart and Mike Valentine for doing a great job cooking all the burgers, hot dogs, and brauts! Most attending brought a dish to share, and the selection of desserts was truly amazing. Cookies, brownies, pies, and a cream puff cake were devoured by hungry MVR members.

During the meal several lucky member’s ticket numbers were drawn for some door prizes. President Lisa Soriano welcomed everyone during the meal, and Dave Zimmerman invited all attending to the next social event, a Pond Party at the Zimmerman’s on Sunday, August 11. Then it was on to the entertainment/sports event of the day – the Corn Hole Toss competition! Sixteen folks signed up (and paid) to compete. A total of $80.00 was raised, and will be donated to our chosen charity, the Mobile Meals Weekender Program. The competition was tough, and went down to the wire. But at the end, the team of Mike Valentine and Janet Dellinger defeated Barney Stewart and Dave Zimmerman for the top prize and bragging rights until next year. Congrats to Mike and Janet!

As usual, Kim Harris and her Social Committee did an amazing job organizing this event, and bringing all the necessary supplies (except matches) to ensure that we had a fun and successful day. Kim is truly a blessing for MVR and we can’t thank her enough for all the work that she and Bob do for us! A tip of the Porsche cap to Kim and Bob, and all the other workers who made it happen.

Finally, a walk through the parking lot was like a mini car show, with at least 10 Porsches in the lot. I saw 911s, Boxsters, Caymans, and even a Cayenne waiting to take their owners safely home after the day’s festivities. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. Enjoy your Porsche summer!

TECHNICAL Q&A BY: PCA TECHNICAL COMMITTEE TAKEN FROM PCA TECH Q&A EDITED AND COMPILED BY: MIKE VALENTINE

Radiator Clean Out – 2001 Boxster S Question: Looking behind the bumper, I can see that there is some junk caught in the air intake area (leaves, etc.), and the center radiator has a lot of small pebbles and grit caught in it.

The engine runs cool, even in very hot weather, but I would like to clean it all out.

Do you recommend bumper removal, condenser removal and vacuuming, or do you suggest using water to back flush the debris?

I do have a Radiator Genie (www.radiatorgenie.com [link is external]) that I have used successfully on my truck.

The car is quite tidy, and I like keeping it that way. Seeing those things stuck in the radiator just bugs me (no pun intended).

Look forward to your input.

Answer - Submitted by Pedro Bonilla: The best way to properly clean it all out is to remove the bumper skin. Then remove the rubber shroud and finally separate the radiators to get in between them. With them open you can lightly tap the bottom rail to get small pebbles and debris to fall out.

You may be surprised at how much debris is collected, especially in the northern climates in the fall. I generally do this as a yearly maintenance in my own car.

Happy Porsche’ing,

Oil In Coolant– 1993 968 Question: Just discovered oil in coolant. (“Milkshake”) Other than a head gasket leak what could be a cause? Oil does not seem to be contaminated..

Answer - Submitted by George Beuselinck. : There are a couple of O-rings in the oil filter housing (your car uses an external oil cooler) which can fail. When the failure happens, oil can migrate to the coolant, resulting in a milkshake. It can also 20 AUGUST 2019

result in coolant migrating to the oil. This was a fairly common problem with early 944 cars. Porsche published a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) concerning these failures.

I have made a copy of that TSB (the information about the 944 turbo applies to your car) here:

What Is The Normal Operating Temperature (Oil, Water, Oil Pressure) – 2014 Boxster Base Question: I have a 2014 Boxster Base, all stock. No issues just curious as to the normal operating temps and oil pressure.

Answer - Submitted by Pedro Bonilla: “Normal” operating temperatures and oil pressure varies depending on the type of driving.

In regular city driving, the normal coolant operating temp is 194ºF. The oil will be slightly higher once the engine has thoroughly warmed up. At operating temp, the oil pressure should be 50 psi or higher at 5,000 RPM. Oil pressure will start out higher as oil is cooler and will gradually drop as the oil warms up and flows easier. der RÜCKSPIEGEL February 2019

MVR DID YOU KNOW? BY: SARAH MIERZWIAK

Hallo zusammen! Das ist Sarah Mierzwiak, die in unserem GT3 die deutsche Autobahn fahrt… Auf dem Weg nach Osterreich zu einem abendlichen cocktail und afendessen am spektakularen Worthersee …

Wait a minute … our venerable editors said the reporting would now only be international, and in German … But I’m still in Toledo, putting together the registration and sponsor goodie bags for our Grattan DE. I must have been daydreaming ... Ah well, one can’t have everything.

Some of you may know that in the 1950’s, Porsche was producing not only its iconic cars but a host of related accessories, including a highly sought after luggage series, purses, calendars, model cars, buttons, and t-shirts. Just a few decades later in 1972, was officially established in Stuttgart, Germany by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, grandson of Porsche founder . Here, the studio took its distinctive engineering a further step into their car owners’ lives, and additional classic car accessories soon followed, including: sunglasses, writing utensils, fashion apparel, and world renowned watches. Of course, Porsche Design would not stop with just these items. As Ferdinand Porsche espoused in his design aesthetic: “If you analyze the function of an object its form often becomes obvious.” Juergen Gessler, CEO, Porsche Design Studio, Luxury Society, 2018

Through this overarching principle, the Porsche Design Studio has continued to innovate, creating truly one of a kind pieces that challenge the mind and excite the soul. You can find Porsche Design Studio items for the office: a desk chair with the exact original equipment sport seat right out of the 911 Carrera GTS or 911 GT3, selling at a cool 6,570 USD; the P’7000 PAN Desk Lamp with a compact aluminum profile and innovative geometrical construction allowing parallel movement of the lamp head and arm, selling for 3,200 USD; as well as a large selection of Porsche writing instruments, such as the Shake Pen of the Year 2019 Bundle + 911 Silhouette Pen Holder, available for 255 euros, or the Solid Gold Fountain Pen Limited Edition, selling at 25,000 euros.

For the home – hold on to your socks! – Porsche Design Studio has partnered with Poggenpohl, designing the “man’s kitchen …pursuing a new path that deliberately mixes up the classical division of male and female labor …” Poggenpohl and Porsche note: “And just as Porsche offers a unique and fascinating driving experience, so too a modern, well-equipped kitchen transforms the preparation of exquisite food into a special event. Beyond this, one thing still holds true, whether on the road or at home: attractive design pleases our desire for aestheticism.”

Continues on the next page... 29 der RÜCKSPIEGEL

Poggenpohl.com FYI, there is no stated price for the kitchen. If you or your husband need a new kitchen to coordinate with your Porsche vehicle, visit Poggenpohl’s website to order a brochure, find a studio, or book a meeting. For our kitchen, Todd and I will probably stick with the more affordable Siemens by Porsche Design Toaster and Kettle in brushed aluminum, available at a very decent price of 35 and 28 euros, respectively.

Two of my absolute favorite product offerings: the Porsche Design Johnnie Walker Private Bar, and the Veuve Clicquot Vertical Limit champagne refrigerator. The Johnny Walker Private Bar stands over six feet tall - appointed with a brushed stainless steel exterior and interior, Australian lace wood, and natural shagreen leather. The bar has a motion activated opening that will amaze, presenting a magnum of cask-strength Blue Label, two regular bottles of Blue Label, and a surprising hidden, chilled compartment that rises out of the bar to reveal a bespoke crystal ice bucket, stainless steel tongs, four crystal glasses and a crystal jug of iced water (https:// youtu.be/TY_Mrue62Bw). This beautiful standing art piece can be purchased for just 155,000 USD. If a bit too pricey, there is The Cube for about 370 USD, and The Chiller for about 755 USD – offering similar brushed stainless steel and leather construction, but with just one bottle each, drinking glasses, and lids that double as ice buckets.

The Veuve Clicquot Vertical Limit, like all Porsche Design collaborations, is a considerable reinvention of function and art: the champagne refrigerator is a seven- and-a-half-foot tall stainless steel masterpiece. It holds twelve of the best vintage magnum champagne bottles, each in its own refrigerated compartment set at a constant 54 degrees, and exposing orange light when opened. Crafted by hand and produced in a limited edition run of only fifteen, it is priced at about 100,000 euros. Porsche Design Studio did not produce a lower priced option for this item.

Finally, some of you may know of the Porsche Design Tower, a 560 million USD exclusive, 60 story residential tower completed in 2016, in Miami Florida. Featuring 132 luxury townhomes, each is equipped with summer kitchens, a fireplace, gorgeous water views, and of course 2 car garages. There are six different floor plans ranging from 4,252 to 16,915 square feet; with a few offered in a duplex configuration - built to showcase your car as a work of art. The neighborhood is Sunny Isles Beach and there are units available! If you would like to surprise your loved one with a home away from home, check out: investinmiami.com.

It has been quite interesting to research how Porsche Design Studio has touched so many products. And happily, they continue to ensure that at least a few of us are in for quite a bespoke life ... ; )

AROUND THE ZONE BY: LORI SCHULTZ The saying in PCA is “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people” rings true for all of us. Sometimes, though, it IS about the cars. The first weekend of June, the Indycars and IMSA series come to Belle Isle in Detroit, MI, and PCA hosts a Car Corral on the island. We had a record crowd of 50 Porsches with over 85 people in the police-escorted caravan from The Henry hotel in Dearborn to the Island on Saturday morning, stopping traffic, including all the Corvettes, as they drove by into their place on the access roads. The total number of Porsches in the corral on Saturday was 96 – difficult to catch in a single photo – I tried. We had a record-breaking crowd in our hospitality tent from 18 PCA regions. Thanks to all who came out to join us, stay tuned for next year – we’ll do it again.

MotorStadt held an autocross at Corrigan Oil Speedway in Lansing MI on June 22. Significant to me was that, this was the site of my very first autocross in 1984 driving Rick Riley’s Gulf Blue 1975 Carrera. I was so nervous, my hands were sweating so badly that the steering wheel had white salt marks in it at the end of the day! And I set slow time of day. A bit more experienced this year, I joined the rest of the crowd mid pack. At the end, Don Dickman handed out trophies, and all had a great time

As you are attending events across our Zone, think about getting more involved in your club. Have new ideas? Volunteer to help out in the planning for the next event, be it social, tour, autocross, DE – we like new ideas and want to get more of our members to participate. And, think about attending an event that is new to you. Get out and enjoy your Porsche!

Several regions have Porsche dealerships hosting the launch of the new Macan, did you go? Please support our dealerships! Most are great sponsors of our events throughout the year. Stop in and take a look, and be sure to introduce yourself as a PCA member and say thank you. And finally, mark your calendars for August 9 for the release of the movie “The Art of Racing in the Rain at a theater near you. If you haven’t read or listened to the book, I highly recommend doing so.
