I argue that understanding health now encompasses the importance of wellbeing as a key determinant of longer-term good health. I use the case study of body modification and body art to explore this further. I argue that, while body modification and body art, as a means of self-expression and empowerment, is relatively easy to access, there are critical gaps in the regulatory framework that may undermine the notion of wellbeing and individual choice. I critique the Court of Appeal’s decision in R v BM, [2018] EWCA Crim 560 which raises particular public interest concerns, but conclude that it is a missed opportunity in relation to how the law understands the promotion of ‘self’ within a model of wellbeing. TITLE: A Content Analysis of On-Line Information on Body Piercing and Body Modification MASTERS COMMITTEE MEMBERS Dr. Keith King (Chair) and Dr. Amy Bernard This study was a content analysis of websites of 75 US-based body piercing establishments affiliated with the Association of Professional Piercers. The purpose of the study was to investigate the information available on the websites about studio cleanliness, safety precautions, potential complications from body piercings, body piercers‟ professional experience and affiliations, recommended aftercare, recommended resources on body modification, and the body modification procedures available. The gathered information was unique in body modification research in that the information came from within the industry, as opposed to clients of the industry. Body piercing establishments provided much information that promoted safe piercing practices and minimization of risk of negative complications.

Klasické Piercingy obočí, pupíku, rty, jazyka či ucha se pro jednoduchost nazývají shodně s místem propichu, oproti následujícím (Piercing, 2011, srov. Hudson, 2009): Conch - piercing ušní chrupavky Erl - podkožní piercing nosu Frenulum - horizontální piercing uzdičky nad horním rtem Labret - piercing ve střední části horního nebo spodního rtu (i pod ním či nad ním) Madonna - piercing na straně horního rtu Nostril - piercing jedné části nosu Septum - piercing nosní přepážky Tragus - piercing chrupavky u vchodu do ušního kanálku Genitální Piercing lze samozřejmě nalézt i v těch nejintimnějších partiích. U mladých a štíhlých se to může zdát přirozené a podtrhující jejich vlastní osobnost, krásu, zlepšující sexuální prožitky, je však třeba být v tomto směru opatrní, ne všechna místa jsou pro všechny příjemné a vzrušující, někdy spíše naopak. (Pastor, 2007). Dle mého je až s podivem, kolik různých míst a možností umístění piercingu lze právě v těchto místech vymyslet (Piercing, 2011, srov.
