1958-1978: 20 anni di sperimentazioni spaziali in Occidente La collezione copre il ventennio 1958-1978 che è stato particolarmente importante nella storia della esplorazio- ne spaziale, in quanto ha posto le basi delle conoscenze tecnico-scientifiche necessarie per andare nello spa- zio in sicurezza e per imparare ad utilizzare le grandi potenzialità offerte dallo spazio per varie esigenze civili e militari. Nel clima di guerra fredda, lo spazio è stato fin dai primi tempi, utilizzato dagli Americani per tenere sotto con- trollo l’avversario e le sue dotazioni militari, in risposta ad analoghe misure adottate dai Sovietici. Per preparare le missioni umane nello spazio, era indispensabile raccogliere dati e conoscenze sull’alta atmo- sfera e sulle radiazioni che si incontrano nello spazio che circonda la Terra. Dopo la sfida lanciata da Kennedy, gli Americani dovettero anche prepararsi allo sbarco dell’uomo sulla Luna ed intensificarono gli sforzi per conoscere l’ambiente lunare. Fin dai primi anni, le sonde automatiche fecero compiere progressi giganteschi alla conoscenza del sistema solare. Ben presto si imparò ad utilizzare i satelliti per la comunicazione intercontinentale e il supporto alla navigazio- ne, per le previsioni meteorologiche, per l’osservazione della Terra. La Collezione testimonia anche i primi tentativi delle nuove “potenze spaziali” che si avvicinano al nuovo mon- do dei satelliti, che inizialmente erano monopolio delle due Superpotenze URSS e USA. L’Italia, con San Mar- co, diventò il terzo Paese al mondo a lanciare un proprio satellite e allestì a Malindi la prima base equatoriale, che fu largamente utilizzata dalla NASA. Alla fine degli anni ’60 anche l’Europa entrò attivamente nell’arena spaziale, lanciando i propri satelliti scientifici e di telecomunicazione dalla propria base equatoriale di Kourou. -

Nicklas © Smithsonian Institution, 2003 NASM Archives Desind Collection 1997-0014 Herbert Stephen Desind Collection 109 Cubic Feet, 305 Boxes Biographical Note Herbert Stephen Desind was a Washington, DC area native born on January 15, 1945, raised in Silver Spring, Maryland and educated at the University of Maryland. He obtained his BA degree in Communications at Maryland in 1967, and began working in the local public schools as a science teacher. At the time of his death, in October 1992, he was a high school teacher and a freelance writer/lecturer on spaceflight. Desind also was an avid model rocketeer, specializing in using the Estes Cineroc, a model rocket with an 8mm movie camera mounted in the nose. To many members of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), he was known as “Mr. Cineroc.” His extensive requests worldwide for information and photographs of rocketry programs even led to a visit from FBI agents who asked him about the nature of his activities. Mr. Desind used the collection to support his writings in NAR publications, and his building scale model rockets for NAR competitions. Desind also used the material in the classroom, and in promoting model rocket clubs to foster an interest in spaceflight among his students. Desind entered the NASA Teacher in Space program in 1985, but it is not clear how far along his submission rose in the selection process. He was not a semi-finalist, although he had a strong application. -

1 SATELITES ARTIFICIALES. Capítulo 5º Subcap. 10 <> CRONOLOGIA DE LOS SATÉLITES ARTIFICIALES DE LA TIERRA. Esta es una relación cronológica de todos los lanzamientos de satélites artificiales de nuestro planeta, con independencia de su éxito o fracaso, tanto en el disparo como en órbita. Significa pues que muchos de ellos no han alcanzado el espacio y fueron destruidos. Se señala en primer lugar (a la izquierda) su nombre, seguido de la fecha del lanzamiento, el país al que pertenece el satélite (que puede ser otro distinto al que lo lanza) y el tipo de satélite; este último aspecto podría no corresponderse en exactitud dado que algunos son de finalidad múltiple. En los lanzamientos múltiples, cada satélite figura separado (salvo en los casos de fracaso, en que no llegan a separarse) pero naturalmente en la misma fecha y juntos. Index to The Declassified Collection of CORONA, ARGON, AND LANYARD RECORDS Declassified by the National Reconnaissance Office on November 26, 1997 Introduction The CORONA, ARGON, LANYARD (CAL) collection consists of documents related to the development, acquisition, and operation of the Intelligence Community's first film-return satellite reconnaissance systems. Organization The collection has been organized around the National Reconnaissance Office's (NRO's) Records Control Schedule. The NRO's Records Control Schedule defines the major subject categories of NRO records. If a category is not included in the index, that category did not contain any CAL records. About the Index Each major file series category in the Records Control Schedule is subdivided into additional categories, and most are further subdivided into specific topics. Within a category, records are listed in chronological order by date of origin using the format YYMMDD. If the month and/or day of origin is unknown, the date will be indicated by the year followed by "0101" or the year and month followed by "01", for example 650101 or 650601. CAL records consist of several types; documents, memoranda, telegram/cables, letters, and charts. In the index, the title of each records begin with a descriptor of its type, ("Doc" for document, "Memo" for memorandum, "TWX" for telegram/cable). The title in the index may vary somewhat from that on the document because some titles contained classified information and therefore had to be redacted. Telegrams/cables generally do not have titles, so the title in the index frequently represents a brief gist of the subject matter. Records which are attachments to a primary record are filed with the primary record. -

Girifalco, Ph.D. Staff Scientists ABS TRACT This quarter was spent in acquiring data for the flights chosen for study in the last quarter. Analysis of the environment for the individual flights has begun. This work is progressing with the viewpoint of trying to simplify the environmental specification. The most difficult aspect of the environmental analysis is the speci- fication of the vehicle's thermal history. The vehicles under study are therefore being grouped according to subclassifica- tions based on the nature of the vehicle as the first attempt to find any performance correlations. All of the specific data for the flights under study have been extracted from the literature obtained from the computer searches conducted earlier. These data are incomplete and in- adequate for this study. Examples of the nature of this data were reported in the last quarterly,report and are shown in 8 this report. The data required for this study must be obtained by personal contacts with individuals who have been connected with the various flights. The appropriate individuals to contact have been identified for 75 of the 77 flights included in this study. Jan Thimo Grundmann Matr.-Nr. 192335 Die Planung und Auslegung von Satellitenkonstellationen zur Errichtung von Kommunikations-, Navigations- und Erkundungssystemen im Erdorbit sowie von interplanetaren Sondenflotten zum Zwecke der kontinuierlichen Erforschung von Objekten des Sonnensystems über mehrere Oppositionszyklen hin erfordert die Berücksichtigung der zu erwartenden Ausfallraten in den jeweiligen Missionsphasen hinsichtlich der Erfüllung der Missionsziele und der Kostenoptimierung. Die hierzu verfügbaren Daten sind jedoch aus historischen, politischen und rechtlichen Gründen sehr heterogen und lückenhaft in Detail und Umfang. Dies hat zur Folge, daß der Bedarf an Reserve-Raumflugkörpern und der Erfahrungszuwachs im Serienbau sowie das Missionsrisiko in Gruppen von einzelnen Flugkörpern verschiedenen Aufgabenstellungen nur unzureichend erfaßt werden können. Auch wird die Erkennung von grundlegenden Häufungen bestimmter Probleme durch statistische Methoden mangels einer konsistenten Datenbasis ebenso sehr erschwert wird wie Vorhersagen des zukünftigen Raumfahrtmarktes.
