Nightspots #1104 • Oct nightspots #1104 • Oct. 16, 2013 BURN, BABY, BURN! Sidetrack’s Disco-a-Go-Go heralded the start of the Gay Christmas season we know as Halloween. Page 17 That Guy by Kirk Williamson Chicago, as well as being at the de facto geographic center of the country, has long been the center of the leather/fetish scene, from even before the founding of IML over 35 years ago. This city is home to over 15 leather/fetish clubs, some for play and some which are strictly social. This Friday, Oct. 18, Touche brings together representatives of the full spectrum of clubs for their second annual Leather Club Rush Party. This party allows those interested in the club scene to meet members of these clubs and to talk about their group’s activities and membership. If you are so inclined, this is THE opportunity to get all the info and to see where you fall into the scene. There’s a home for you there, trust. Well, after the smashing costume-contest success of Eleanor Abernathy (last year’s “Crazy Cat Lady” costume), I was too pressed for time and could not come up with a topper for Halloween ‘13. I guess someone else will have to win the hundreds of dollars in cash and prizes that I raked in last year. See our calendar on page 26 to seek out the Halloween gold. Your chances are far better now that I have hung up the cat suit. I will, however, be ushering in my 40th year (read: 39th birthday) Tues., Oct. 29, at Jackhammer’s Creaoke Karaoke (or Kirk-aoke, or Kara-kirk-e, or some such nonsense). Come in costume or not. Just drink with me as 40 looms nearer and nearer. Talk about your scary Halloween concepts! And I’d better see each and every one of your at The March On Springfield For Marriage Equality, Tue., Oct. 22 in Springfield. I’ll be on site working the video cam and then off to the press tent to put out the next historic issue of Windy City Times. Please be part of that history. See www. THE CALL Photos by Kirk 8 nightspots Oct. 16, 2013 DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE by Marc “Moose” Moder THE POWER OF LIVE MUSIC: THE SECOND ALBUM Most great live albums, like their live show counterparts, cannot be contained in the length of a 75-minute CD, so most great live albums are broken into two parts. Hence the part two format, recalling last issue’s ode to the great live albums of the modern era. Last issue we explored ground- breaking live albums by eighties monsters Depeche Mode, U2 and Peter Gabriel – this week we veer off into smaller, gayer territory. One of the challenges of doing a live album is to give your fans something new to hear instead of just slightly different or longer versions of the hits. That was done en masse in the nineties with MTV Unplugged albums by Nirvana, Mariah Carey, Natalie Merchant and many more and has since been done to death (and hopefully put to death). These next examples are three gay acts that managed to re-imagine the live album with classical flair, as only a queen can. Back in late ‘80s, power pop quartet The Bongos folded after two great albums leaving their third album, Phantom Train, unreleased and their lead singer, Richard Barone, nothing but one great live show previewing the new material to show for it. Richard released that live album—which is mostly him, his acoustic guitar, piano and strings—as Cool Blue Halo, which drew him even more new fans than his previous band and helped usher in the aforementioned Unplugged era. CBH was the perfect transitional CD for Richard; covering his hits with The Bongos; some of the unreleased Phantom Train tracks; great covers by TRex, Bowie and The Beatles; and one track that would be the standout on his first studio LP, “Primal Dream.” Both Phantom Train and Cool Blue Halo anniversary editions just hit stores last week. Around the same time The Bongos were parting, Marc Almond was making his pink spotlight shine beyond the legendary Soft Cell. While Soft Cell had their moments of cabaret and camp, Marc turned it up to 11 when, after 6 hit-or-miss solo albums and 14 years combined in the industry, he released his dramatic live album and video, 12 Years of Tears. Pulling from his years with Soft Cell, his love of French and cabaret, and his two big pop solo albums, 12 Years feels like a Jacques Brel musical complete with Jacques Brel classics like “Jacky” (see Ab Fab) and “If You Go Away” (see Streisand and Sinatra), plus the best song ever about drag, “What Makes a Man a Man.” And finally the mother of all big gay albums has to be Pet Shop Boys’ reimagining of their career with a live orchestra, Robbie Williams, Rufus Wainwright and The Art of Noise. If you saw them in concert this past month, you know nothing beats them in concert, so imagine them with this much power behind them. Concrete does what all of these mentioned releases do: embellish, enhance and strengthen your love for the originals, while making you equally appreciate the ones less familiar to your ear. Just like any good concert should. 10nightspots Oct. 16, 2013 Oh, no. I’m not going out there. They’re too scary! ARE THEY FAMILY?: QUEER PARENTS AND QUEER PASTS IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN CULTURE BY MICHAEL SHETINA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2019 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Siobhan Somerville, Chair Professor Chantal Nadeau Associate Professor Julie Turnock Associate Professor Richard T. Rodríguez, University of California, Riverside ABSTRACT The early twenty-first century saw a marked increase in depictions of LGBTQ people and communities in American popular culture occurring alongside political activism that culminated in the repeal of the Pentagon's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy (2010) and the Supreme Court's overturning of same-sex marriage bans in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015). Even as these events fueled a triumphant progressive narrative in which social and political representation moved LGBTQ people into a better future, a significant strain of LGBTQ-focused popular culture drew its attention to the past. My dissertation, Are They Family?: Queer Parents and Queer Pasts in Popular Culture, examines how American film, television, and literature between 2005 and 2016 construct relationships among LGBTQ people across recent history in generational and familial terms. These works queer the concept of the family by deploying parents and parental figures to examine the role of families in the transmission of queer knowledges, practices, and identities, countering notions of families as mere precursors to queer identity—“families of origin”—or as the agential creations of out LGBTQ people—“families of choice.” These works demonstrate how such dichotomous conceptions of family limit the people, experiences, and forms of affect that are legible within the category of LGBTQ history.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reading RuPaul’s Drag Race: Queer Memory, Camp Capitalism, and RuPaul’s Drag Empire A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Carl Douglas Schottmiller 2017 © Copyright by Carl Douglas Schottmiller 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reading RuPaul’s Drag Race: Queer Memory, Camp Capitalism, and RuPaul’s Drag Empire by Carl Douglas Schottmiller Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor David H Gere, Chair This dissertation undertakes an interdisciplinary study of the competitive reality television show RuPaul’s Drag Race, drawing upon approaches and perspectives from LGBT Studies, Media Studies, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, and Performance Studies. Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise. ii While most scholars analyze RuPaul’s Drag Race primarily through content analysis of the aired television episodes, this dissertation combines content analysis with ethnography in order to connect the television show to tangible practices among fans and effects within drag communities.

  • Emotion, Femininity and Everyday Experience
Emotion, Femininity and Everyday Experience Straight Female Audience’s Perception of RuPaul’s Drag Race Student name: Yoshino Akizuki Student number: 509330 Supervisor: Balázs Boross Master Arts, Culture and Society Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam Master Thesis June 14, 2019 ABSTRACT An American reality TV program RuPaul’s Drag Race, in which drag queens compete with each other to be “America’s Next Drag Superstar,” has earned tremendous hit since it was first broadcast in 2009. Although Drag Race started as a niche program featuring drag queens and targeted only at the LGBTQ community, it is becoming a world-wide phenomenon in mainstream popular culture. Especially, straight female audiences have become a large percentage of the audience. However, why are straight women, who have not necessarily had a connection with drag culture, enthusiastic about Drag Race? Previous research on Drag Race are mainly textual analysis addressing particular issues such as race and ethnicity, social class, body shape and femininity (Darnell and Tabatabai, 2017; Edgar, 2011; Goldmark, 2015; LeMaster, 2015; Strings & Bui, 2014; Vesey, 2017). However, they lack the perspective of actual audience. And therefore, they do not explain the popularity among straight female audience. Since the audience of Drag Race has become increasingly diverse, different audiences interpret the contents differently. As Alasuutari (1999) explains using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model, intended message from producers is not always received “correctly” by audiences. Therefore, it is significant to take into account the perspective of the audience. Furthermore, as Bird (2003) suggests audiences critically and actively interpret the message and put them in the context of everyday experience, we should closely examine the process of meaning-making.

Drag has recently become popularized through various visual media. This study uses visual media and political queer theory to analyze drag’s association with the building block of society: the family unit. Through use of contemporary content analysis and survey data, this thesis examines how the rise of drag in visual media, specifically the television show RuPaul’s Drag Race, has transformed the political structure of drag families.

The program’s commercial success throughout the 2010s brought drag performance into the mainstream cultural arena, prompting a host of effects on the historically grassroots culture of drag. This thesis project explores the show’s impact on one particular geographic community, the Toronto drag scene, which has been active in some capacity for at least 70 years. This ethnographic study is drawn from a year and a half in the field in the Toronto drag scene and a series of semi-structured interivews with nine research participations who took part in the 2018 edition of the Toronto-based drag pageant Crews and Tangos Drag Race. Using this group as a case study, this thesis demonstrates how Drag Race has influenced both the politics and aesthetics of the Toronto drag scene. Drawing from scholar Will Straw’s work on scene theory, I argue Drag Race now acts as global drag culture’s dominant system of articulation (Systems 369) and that it not only dictates trends in drag, but also provides the contemporary drag fan a rubric for understanding drag’s cultural meaning.
