Catalogue of Protozoan Parasites Recorded in Australia Peter J. O
1 CATALOGUE OF PROTOZOAN PARASITES RECORDED IN AUSTRALIA PETER J. O’DONOGHUE & ROBERT D. ADLARD O’Donoghue, P.J. & Adlard, R.D. 2000 02 29: Catalogue of protozoan parasites recorded in Australia. Memoirs of the Queensland Museum 45(1):1-164. Brisbane. ISSN 0079-8835. Published reports of protozoan species from Australian animals have been compiled into a host- parasite checklist, a parasite-host checklist and a cross-referenced bibliography. Protozoa listed include parasites, commensals and symbionts but free-living species have been excluded. Over 590 protozoan species are listed including amoebae, flagellates, ciliates and ‘sporozoa’ (the latter comprising apicomplexans, microsporans, myxozoans, haplosporidians and paramyxeans). Organisms are recorded in association with some 520 hosts including mammals, marsupials, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. Information has been abstracted from over 1,270 scientific publications predating 1999 and all records include taxonomic authorities, synonyms, common names, sites of infection within hosts and geographic locations. 1988, No. 3 COPEIA August 3 Copria, 1988(3),pp. 527-543 Evolution of Marsupial Frogs (Hylidae: Hemiphractinae): Immunological Evidence Marsupial tree frogs (Hylidae: Hemiphractinae) share the unusual feature of females brooding eggs on the dorsum or in a dorsal pouch. Results of studies of albumin evolution in these frogs suggest that the generic lineages are ancient (Cretaceous),that a minimum of four species groups can be identified within the genus Gastrotheca and that the monotypic Amphignathodon should be placed in Gastrotheca. The results also support recent suggestions that direct development is the plesiomorphic reproductive mode in egg-brooding hylid frogs. The esti- mated times of divergence of various lineages coincide with major orogenic events in South America. Reevolution of Lost Mandibular Teeth in Frogs

Wiens Department of Ecology and Evolution, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-5245 E-mail: [email protected] Received June 24, 2010 Accepted December 7, 2010 Dollo’s law states that structures that are evolutionarily lost will not be regained. Recent phylogenetic studies have revealed several potential examples in which Dollo’s law seems to be violated, where lost structures appear to have been regained over evolutionary time. However, these examples have recently been questioned and suggested to be methodological artifacts. In this article, I document a striking and incontrovertible phylogenetic example of the re-evolution of a lost, complex structure: mandibular teeth in the frog genus Gastrotheca. I use a time-calibrated phylogeny for 170 amphibian species to show that mandibular teeth were lost in the ancestor of modern frogs at least 230 million years ago (Mya) and have been regained in the last ∼5–17 My. I review recent studies on trait re-evolution and show that this long period of trait absence prior to re-acquisition is largely unprecedented. I also argue that there are several methodological issues that may cause trait re-evolution to be hardest to detect under those conditions when it is most likely to occur, leading to erroneous failures to reject Dollo’s law. Finally, I discuss a mechanism that may facilitate trait re-evolution, and the evolution of mandibular teeth in frogs as an example of developmental constraint. -

Access to this file is available from: http://eprints.jcu.edu.au/17586 CHAPTER 11 Chlamydial disease 11.1 Introduction During the disease survey (Chap 10) Chlamydia pneumoniae was identified in the lungs of an immunosuppressed M. iteratus with chronic pneumonia. This case was described in detail as it is significant for a number of reasons. Although chlamydiosis has been described from frogs in other countries (Newcomer et al., 1982; Mutschrnann, 1998), the recent changes in the taxonomy of Chlamydia may mean that the identification of C. psittaci in these cases needs to be re-examined. C. pneumoniae is an important human pathogen that had previously been found only in humans, koalas and a horse (Storey et al., 1993). Since we published this report, C. pneumoniae was identified in captive X tropicalis in the USA (Reed et al., 2000) and may be more common in amphibians than previously realised. 11.2 My role in the paper I did the pathology and electron microscopy that led to the diagnosis of chlamydiosis, while co-authors from Queensland University of Technology identified the species using culture, PCR and immunofluorescence. Rick Speare made the initial presumptive diagnosis of chlamydiosis based on histology. This chapter is comprised of a published report: Berger, L., Volp, K., Mathews, S., Speare, R., Timms, P. 1999.
