During the 1920s, Berlin flourished as centre of modern culture. Yet this flourishing did not exist exclusively amongst the intellectual elites that occupied the city centre and affluent western suburbs. It also extended into the proletarian districts to the north and east of the city. Within these areas existed a complex urban landscape that was rich with cultural tradition and artistic expression. This thesis seeks to redress the bias towards the centre of Berlin and its recognised cultural currents, by exploring the art and architecture found in the city’s working-class districts. -
Science As a Vocation, Philosophy As a Religion
Flashback: Max Weber’s “Science as a Vocation” Sociologica. V.12 N.1 (2018) Edited by Paul du Gay and José Ossandón ISSN 1971-8853 https://doi.org/10.6092/issn.1971-8853/8436 https://sociologica.unibo.it/ Science as a Vocation, Philosophy as a Religion Ian Hunter Published: July 26, 2018 Abstract When Max Weber delivered his “Science as a Vocation” lecture in 1917, it was to an audience of students facing war and political conflict, and shaped by its membership of activist youth groups whose ideologies were informed by left-Hegelianism. Resisting the clamor for a political message that would light the path to a progressive future, Weber told the students that such philosophical prophecy betrayed the office of the scholar. This consisted in transmitting the “value free” methods that characterized empirical fields, and the ethical disciplines that students had to undergo in order to master these methods. The paper argues that when the Frankfurt School rejected Weber’s approach it did so on the basis of a critique that amounted to a cultural-political attack grounded in the left-Hegelianism that he had repudiated. Keywords: Weber; Frankfurt School; scholarship; ethics; Hegelianism. Ian Hunter: Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Queensland (Australia) [email protected]; https://iash.uq.edu.au/profile/118/emeritus-professor-ian-hunter-faha Ian Hunter is an emeritus professor in the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Queens- land. He is the author of a number of studies in the history of philosophical, political, and religious thought, including Rival Enlightenments: Civil and Metaphysical Philosophy in Early Modern Germany (Cambridge University Press, 2001), and The Secularization of the Confessional State (Cambridge University Press, 2007). -

Panel Discussion III with Simone Hain, Philipp Oswalt, Ronny Schüler, and the Audience chaired by Doreen Mende Hain, Simone et al., Panel Discussion III, in: Bärnreuther, Andrea (ed.), Taking a Stand? Debating the Bauhaus and Modernism, Heidelberg: arthistoricum.net 2021, p. 425-439, https://doi.org/10.11588/arthistoricum.843.c112924 427 Hain, Oswalt, Schüler, Mende [ K ] There are many facets of Modernism and modernity as well as many ambivalent aspects. What does that mean for our own concepts and visions? Doreen Mende This panel’s title is «Historiography and politics of memory, pro- cesses of reception and repression» but it could also have been bauhaus and geopolitics called «The Bauhaus—Geopolitics in the context of ‹marginal marginal counter-history counter-history›», to pick up on this concept of Kenneth Framp- ton from Ryan Fred Long’s lecture. This panel is thus dedicated to the Bauhaus as a Modernist project par excellence: This is a Modernism shaped by violence, wars, and rationalization, which confronts us with a conflictual and ambivalent Modernism as a modernism complex kind of «Modernism complex». In the words of art historian Maria Stavrinaki, Modernism utilises the «privilege of purity, of white- ness» in a world contaminated by war and genocide.1 «Material misery», as Walter Benjamin called the situation in Germany after the First World War and the Spartacus Uprising in January 1919, idea of a new «society» was to be transformed into spiritual or moral wealth, with a uni- claim to universal validity versal model for -
