DEVON STRUT NEWS The Newsletter of the Devon Strut of the Popular Flying Association. June 2006. CO-ORDINATOR’S COMMENTS by Christopher Howell Plymouth City Airport was the location of the first event on the Devon Strut calendar for 2006. This was the first event at Plymouth for many a long year. The weather was good during the day with early morning and late afternoon fog. There were many logistical problems to overcome on the lead up to the event. On the day feedback was mixed, as a city airport may not be seen as an ideal venue for a fly-in. There was certainly an opportunity to put Plymouth in pilots’ log books and many people enjoyed a good day out. The Youth & Education Build-a-Plane Rans S6 was on display and reflected many months of hard work by groups of young people all over the country that built it. The Rans travelled to Devon in a custom converted coach; many thanks to owner Stewart Luck and volunteer custodians Dave Hall and David Millin. Fly-a-Teacher, a PFA youth initiative was launched at Plymouth and hailed a great success. On reflection, the complicated ATC departure procedure created much hard work for Dave Silsbury and Jim Gale and feedback suggests that this would be much better flown from a quieter strip away from a city airport environment. Pilots’ time was very much appreciated, with sincere gratitude to Dave Silsbury, Jim Gale, Peter Gristwood, Steve Robson, Paul Aston and John Crabb. Marshals carried out sterling work and without their help this event would not have been possible. -

The entries in this guide are arranged by company name and include a history of each company, particularly its formation and that of subsidiaries together with mergers and take-overs. Brief details of the records, the relevant accession numbers and any limitations on access are given. Where the records have been listed this is indicated. A glossary of terms specific to the subject area is also included, together with an index. Background to the Collection The Museum's archive department began collecting records in the late 1960s and targeted a number of firms. Although many of the deposits were arranged through formal approaches by the Museum to companies, a significant number were offered by company staff: a significant example is the Supermarine archive (AC 70/4) including some 50,000 drawings, which would have been burnt had an employee not contacted the Museum. The collections seem to offer a bias towards certain types of record, notably drawings and production records, rather than financial records and board minutes. -

Journal of Aeronautical History Paper No. 2012/01 The Formation of the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) 1957-61 Professor Keith Hayward Head of Research, Royal Aeronautical Society Summary This paper traces the history of the merger between Vickers, English Electric and Bristol that produced the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC). It follows the development of government policy to rationalise the aircraft industry, and the lengthy negotiations between various parts of the industry. For several months, serious efforts were made to agree a merger between Vickers, English Electric and de Havilland, which failed for a number of reasons, most important the effect of the VC-11 on future sales of Trident, the effect of a merger on sales of other existing de Havilland aircraft and a preference for independence, urged strongly by the de Havilland Company Secretary, C B White. Inclusion of Bristol in BAC was only considered late in the process of merging Vickers and English Electric, encouraged by the Minister of Aviation, Duncan Sandys. 1. Introduction In his authorative history of the British Aircraft Company, BAC, Charles Gardner provides only a brief account of the negotiations that led to its formation (reference 1). There is a little more in Richard Gardner’s biography of Sir George Edwards (reference 2) as well as in Peter King’s history of the industry’s pioneers (reference 3). In the first two studies, the main focus is on the negotiations between Vickers and English Electric, centring on the TSR-2 programme, and the financial settlement that established BAC in 1961. The formation of BAC was also one element in a much broader upheaval in the UK aircraft industry. -

It’s a great pleasure to be invited to join you today for this important annual space conference. Can I thank Richard Holdaway for the invitation to join you and offer you my own perspectives on your sector. I must also apologise in advance for leaving promptly after my speech – it was my intention to stay for the day, but the whips disagree and I find I must race back to London for a vote on tuition fees at 11:30. Thank you Richard for being so accommodating and flexible in your agenda. I stand before you as someone who at the personal level, like you, shares a strong and lifelong interest in space, and at the professional level, as a new Member of Parliament, as a Conservative backbencher with a major space employer in my constituency, and for whom space will play a major part in my working life as MP for Stevenage. So my main reason for accepting Richard’s invitation today, was really to introduce myself as a friend of space in Parliament, to offer you a glimpse of why space matters to me, to my constituency, but also at the national level, why it matters to the UK. I also want to offer you an insight into how space is perceived more broadly, in these unusual political times, in these times of austerity and Coalition, as we try to balance the need to promote growth and ease the burden of debt. Before I get stuck in, I want to congratulate all of you for what you have already achieved. -
