DEVON STRUT NEWS The Newsletter of the Devon Strut of the Popular Flying Association. June 2006. CO-ORDINATOR’S COMMENTS by Christopher Howell Plymouth City Airport was the location of the first event on the Devon Strut calendar for 2006. This was the first event at Plymouth for many a long year. The weather was good during the day with early morning and late afternoon fog. There were many logistical problems to overcome on the lead up to the event. On the day feedback was mixed, as a city airport may not be seen as an ideal venue for a fly-in. There was certainly an opportunity to put Plymouth in pilots’ log books and many people enjoyed a good day out. The Youth & Education Build-a-Plane Rans S6 was on display and reflected many months of hard work by groups of young people all over the country that built it. The Rans travelled to Devon in a custom converted coach; many thanks to owner Stewart Luck and volunteer custodians Dave Hall and David Millin. Fly-a-Teacher, a PFA youth initiative was launched at Plymouth and hailed a great success. On reflection, the complicated ATC departure procedure created much hard work for Dave Silsbury and Jim Gale and feedback suggests that this would be much better flown from a quieter strip away from a city airport environment. Pilots’ time was very much appreciated, with sincere gratitude to Dave Silsbury, Jim Gale, Peter Gristwood, Steve Robson, Paul Aston and John Crabb. Marshals carried out sterling work and without their help this event would not have been possible. -

Once again the Journal covers a variety of subject areas in Industrial Archaeology. www.hias.org.uk We start with an article on the Saunders Roe aircraft company on the Isle of Wight. The Solent area was very much the cradle of early aircraft manufacture in the UK. The ex-Saunders Roe Columbine Hangar still dominates East Cowes and the manufacture of aircraft components continues on the island. Bob Wealthy writes about the SR45 Princess flying boat, conceivedfrom at the end of the Second World War as a successor to the Empire flying boats which had sustained communication around the British Empire in the 1930s. Jane Hurst tells the story of the surviving remains on a site near Alton which served as a hospital and college for over a century under several auspices. -

SaundersSaunders--RoeRoe andand thethe PrincessPrincess FlyingFlying BoatBoat Talk presented by Bob Wealthy for the Hamburg Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society on the 3rd of June 2010 at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences 29 January 2009 -A Solent Aeromarine Enterprises production © 2009 Revision 1 1 Scope & Introduction This presentation is an introduction to the origins and history of the Saunders Roe Company and the exceptional engineering achievements of the team of employees and contractors/suppliers in designing, building and flying the world's largest all metal flying boat, the Saunders-Roe SR45 Princess. The first flight of the Princess took place from the Solent off Cowes on the 22nd of August 1952. The event was marked in August 2002 with the unveiling of an information board on the waterfront at East Cowes and a “get together” of ex Saunders Roe employees and friends at the East Cowes Town Hall organised as a joint effort by the East Cowes Heritage Centre, The IoW Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society and GKN Aerospace. 2 Princess First Flight 50th Anniversary Event 22nd August 2002 The late Dick Stratton, Princess Chief Flight Test Engineer, unveils the Saunders Roe information board situated on the waterfront at East Cowes. Also in attendance were Maurice Mabey and Tony Walker, two other Princess flight test crew members, and Ray Wheeler, who joined Saunders Roe as a student apprentice and later became Technical Director. 3 Princess First Flight 50th Anniversary Event 22nd August 2002 View of the Princess model
