Once again the Journal covers a variety of subject areas in Industrial Archaeology. www.hias.org.uk We start with an article on the Saunders Roe aircraft company on the Isle of Wight. The Solent area was very much the cradle of early aircraft manufacture in the UK. The ex-Saunders Roe Columbine Hangar still dominates East Cowes and the manufacture of aircraft components continues on the island. Bob Wealthy writes about the SR45 Princess flying boat, conceivedfrom at the end of the Second World War as a successor to the Empire flying boats which had sustained communication around the British Empire in the 1930s. Jane Hurst tells the story of the surviving remains on a site near Alton which served as a hospital and college for over a century under several auspices. -

Compiled and edited by Johannes Wehrmann 2018 Source of Details “Bredow-web.de”,“Das Flugzeug-Archiv”,”FliegerWeb”,Wikipedia Short S.35 Shetland AIC = 4.031.4752.03.72 Das Short Shetland Flugboot war ein britisches Hochgeschwindigkeits-Langstrecken-Vier-Motoren- Flugboot, das von Short Brothers in Rochester, Kent, für den Einsatz im Zweiten Weltkrieg gebaut wurde. Es wurde entwickelt, um die Anforderungen des Luftfahrtministeriums für ein Aufklärungs- flugboot mit sehr langer Reichweite zu erfüllen. Das Design nutzte die Erfahrung des Unternehmens mit der Großproduktion der Short Sunderland. Das Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs verhinderte, dass die Shetland in Produktion gingen. Es war das erste Flugzeug, das mit einem 110-Volt-Bordnetz ausgestattet war. Konstruktionsmerkmale Die Spezifikation R.14/40 ersetzte eine frühere Spezifikation R.5/39, die eine aktualisierte Version der Spezifikation R.3/38 für ein schneller fliegendes Boot als die Short Sunderland war. Short hatte unter anderem ein Design für R.5/39 ausgeschrieben, aber das Ministerium hatte ihre Meinung über die Notwendigkeit eines sofortigen Ersatzes für das Sunderland geändert. R.5/39 hatte ein maxi- males Gewicht bis zu 38.100 kg in Betracht gezogen - R.14/40 erlaubte einen maximalen Start von fast 45.000 kg mit einer Bombenlast von 9.000 kg. Die geplanten Motoren waren der Bristol Centaurus Radial oder der Napier Sabre Inline. -

SaundersSaunders--RoeRoe andand thethe PrincessPrincess FlyingFlying BoatBoat Talk presented by Bob Wealthy for the Hamburg Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society on the 3rd of June 2010 at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences 29 January 2009 -A Solent Aeromarine Enterprises production © 2009 Revision 1 1 Scope & Introduction This presentation is an introduction to the origins and history of the Saunders Roe Company and the exceptional engineering achievements of the team of employees and contractors/suppliers in designing, building and flying the world's largest all metal flying boat, the Saunders-Roe SR45 Princess. The first flight of the Princess took place from the Solent off Cowes on the 22nd of August 1952. The event was marked in August 2002 with the unveiling of an information board on the waterfront at East Cowes and a “get together” of ex Saunders Roe employees and friends at the East Cowes Town Hall organised as a joint effort by the East Cowes Heritage Centre, The IoW Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society and GKN Aerospace. 2 Princess First Flight 50th Anniversary Event 22nd August 2002 The late Dick Stratton, Princess Chief Flight Test Engineer, unveils the Saunders Roe information board situated on the waterfront at East Cowes.
