The All-Marine Men's Softball team combined hot hitting with heads-up play to walk away with the gold in this year's Armed Forces Softball Tournament, held at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, Aug. 11.14. The All-Marine Team scored 168 runs winning six games and losing 3 in the triple round-robin Armed Forces Tournament, which featured the 15 top softball players from the Marine Corps, Army, Navy and Air Force. This year's Armed Forces Softball Championship broke a three- season dry spell for the Marine Corps, who last won the gold in 1989. In their march to the title, the Marine softballers posted a solid winning record, going 3-0 against the Navy, 2-1 against the Army and 1-2 against the Air Force. A key factor in the success of the All-Marine team was the change from "Majors" to "Class A" softball format, which limits the number of home runs allowed and emphasizes strategy and skillful base hitting and running, rather than power hitting alone. This change in format enabled the Marine team to use their hitting and base skills Cpl. Bony ealpie running to tremendous advantage. Garbage also causes an 4 MINUTE APPROVAL attractive nuisance. The local Mongoose Mafia considers my garbage to be prime pickings. It doesn't matter how many bricks I put on the lid; if there are chicken bones in there, the mongoose manage to get them out. Then there is the garbage that falls under the loose category of "litter." I've come to the conclusion that most people think their mothers are going to follow them around picking up their trash. Every day I walk two miles around the base. Every day there are new cans, new candy wrappers, new pieces of trash. It even has its own character. The trash around the 7-Day Store tends toward candy and fruit drinks. I've often wondered if the litterers were leaving themselves a trail so they could find the way back to the store easily. At the Exchange, the litter is mostly old ATM cards, empty bags, and napkins and cups. Once, I found a broken bicycle chain. By the gas station, the most popular garbage is from McDonald's. I've noticed a real upsurge in french fry containers and paper cups. Of course, the worst litter is found in the housing areas. People seem to keep their 50 feet clean, but ignore the common areas. Since those areas are mowed by a lawn crew, it is assumed that they are also suppose to clean up trash. They aren't. As my mother used to say: "You did it; you clean it up." Last week my husband and I went for a quiet walk. Within moments we had collected a beer bottle, two soda cans, and an empty garbage bag. The last came in handy. Along the way we
