WINONAN Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 Volume 89 Issue 2 New Hall and New Center debut at Winona State University Brendan Moore Winonan The doors to the new residence halls constructed in the large Silver Lots south of Sheehan Hall at Winona State University were opened to new tenants Aug. 17. New Hall East and New Center West have been approved by Winona's building inspector, with the exception of some finishing touches. "There are some punch list items they're still working on but for all intents and purposes the building is done," said Winona State Housing and Residence Life Director Paula Scheevel. Not yet officially named, Winona State is working with those who have donated to the residence halls so permanent namesakes can be bestowed, said Scheevel. Though not labeled with the most enticing monikers, the new halls boast contemporary construction and interior design. Roughly 126,000 square feet, the new halls have the capacity Brad Farrell/Winonan to house 408 students. The Czech Republic is the twelfth European country to be honored in the festival’s history, and its selection by Memphis in May International Festival coincides with their celebration of 100 years as an independent nation, beginning as Czechoslovakia in 1918. The Czech Republic is a nation with 10 million inhabitants, situated in the middle of Europe, with Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Poland as its neighbors. Known for its rich historical and cultural heritage, more than a thousand years of Czech history has produced over 2,000 castles, chateaux, and fortresses. The country resonates with beautiful landscapes, including a chain of mountains on the border, deep forests, refreshing lakes, as well as architectural and urban masterpieces. Interestingly, the Czech Republic is known for peaceful transitions; from the Velvet Revolution in which they left Communism behind in 1989, to the Velvet Divorce in which they parted ways with Slovakia in 1993. Boasting the lowest unemployment rate in the European Union, the Czech Republic’s stable economy is supported by robust exports, chiefly in the automotive and technology sectors, with close economic ties to Germany and their former countrymen in Slovakia.

    Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Whitacre, Stainer Hear my prayer Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy has a good claim to be considered the greatest prodigy in musical history. Although Mozart was composing fluent, sometimes large-scale, pieces in his childhood and teens, almost none of his juvenilia have actually survived in the repertoire, whereas Mendelssohn’s Octet (written aged 16), Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture (17), Fingal’s Cave Overture (20) and Italian Symphony (24) are masterpieces which have never slipped from the repertoire since their first publication. Mendelssohn showed an interest in sacred choral music from an early age, and wrote two oratorios - Elijah (which RCS will be performing on 23 rd June 2012) and St Paul . He also wrote a number of other sacred choral works, among which one of the best known and best loved is tonight’s setting of an adaptation of Psalm 55, Hear my Prayer . The composition of this psalm took place towards the end of Mendelssohn’s tragically short life (he died aged only 38 in 1847), being completed on 25 th January 1844. It was originally composed in German as Hör mein Bitten and dedicated to his friend Wilhelm Taubert. The English version of the text, which was approved by Mendelssohn, is by William Bartholomew, an English lyricist, librettist, composer and writer who was, by profession, a chemist. It was given its first performance in English at a concert arranged by Bartholomew’s wife in January 1845. It is possible that Mendelssohn modelled it on English verse anthems, having studied examples by Purcell, Croft and others provided by Thomas Attwood, the organist at St Paul’s Cathedral.
