MESSAGE FROM THE TRUSTEE

I am pleased that our Social Action Ministry is functioning very well and through the Social Service Society we could address the current challenges of the society. The society’s participatory roles of activities have aroused the hidden talents and dormant commitments of many men and women for the benefit of the community and the society at large.

The different programmes and projects to make the individual, family and the society liquor/drug free, the shelter project even to those who have no land, the health programmes - both preventive care and support - including the differently abled, caring individual family and their needs through Save A Family Programme, child care and protection programme, women empowerment programmes and skill development and income generation, caring the orphans and mentally retarded, job and skill trainings through the institutions, and reaching the needy of calamities and disasters, linkages with GOs and NGOs for the betterment of different kinds of labourers and Pravasies were very active during the year under report.

I do appreciate the contributions of the team to the community and to the society and I owe them sincere thanks from the top to the bottom. I do not forget the benefactors both national and international and pray God to bless them all abundantly.

It will be unfair from my part if I do not mention the team leader Rev. Fr. Lenin Raj who was marvelously leading the team well with abundant results. It is also worth to note that his untiring mission work as a parish priest in two parishes simultaneously during the tenure of his directorship, not only established the parish communities in faith and sacraments but also renewal of their churches, community halls, grottos and parochial houses, all new ones with full participation of the community. May God reward him befittingly.

I wish that the society may extend this participatory multifarious development activates to a greater number of people in the years to come.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Analyzing the activities of Trivandrum Social Service Society we see many activities that are destined for the empowerment of the stake holders are going on down through the years. Though they may not always make an immediate change of the community and society, it will result in the development process of the community and the society at large.

I wish to high light two events of the current year in this message.

Currently TSSS is implementing a project named “Building Gender Equity Through Social, Political And Economic Empowerment From An Eco-feminist Perspective” in the regions of Puthukurichy & Anjengo which is an initiative by Basque Government in collaboration with Culcutta Ondoan and local active involvement of Sakhi-Women Resource Centre through which more than 3,000 impoverished women in the coastal areas addressed to reduce the gender based violence, ensure a better and sustainable environment, linking with the local self governments to strengthen public in strategic matters of gender and sustainable environment from an eco-feminist perspective. This is a replication of the project which began in 2007 in Pulluvila and Vizhinjam with good result and the second phase of the same project is already launched this year in the same area. Three of the TSSS staff participated in the World Social Forum Conference which was held at Brazil from 13th March to 17th 2018.The conference focussed on Justice, Peace and Integrity with reference to international and national issues with a motto “Change for Planets Care for People”. My sincere wishes to all the collaborators, the Director Fr. Lenin Raj, the dedicated staff both those who are in the office and in the field, the regional heads and animators, co-ordinators and the unit level supports. Also I express my gratitude to the benefactors of the different projects and programmes. May the Almighty reward them all with His blessings.

MESSAGE FROM THE PREVIOUS DIRECTOR

By the grace of God, I have been able to guide Trivandrum Social Service Society for past six years. Therefore, it is with a sense of contentment that I sit down to pen the Annual report of TSSS for 2018 -2019. All the activities of the Social Action Ministry under which TSSS functions have been categorized - keeping with the past trend - under six commissions: Peace and Development; Labour; Health, Women and Child; Migrants; Anti-Alcohol; and Environment. With the multi-faceted interventions and involvement of TSSS, requirement of a separate office for the organization was a long-felt need. I feel gratified that I have been able to complete the construction of the building and move into it from May 2018. With a heart filled with gratitude, I remember all the wonderful colleagues who have worked hard to make the TSSS Golden Jubilee Building a reality. I also remember with a heavy heart the untimely demise of Das Sir who was a real inspiration and executor of the building project. In August 2018, was ravaged by heavy rains and unprecedented floods, inundating several districts of the state. The destruction caused by the floods is unrepairable. TSSS, along with Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM), was in the forefront to organize relief and rescue operation. Our ministry under the direction of the Archbishop immediately sent the fishermen with their boats to central Kerala to rescue hundreds of stranded people. TSSS also collected relief materials worth INR 1.50 crore from all the parishes and dispatched them to the badly affected areas in Alleppey (Chenganoor), Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam (Changanacherry),Pathanamthitta, Punaloor and Wayanad districts. I take this opportunity to thank all the donors, TSSS staff, KCYM and all the volunteers who worked tirelessly in helping our brothers and sisters in need. Though Ockhi disaster of 2017 is slowly fading out into the backdrop of our memories, our care and concern for the affected people continued throughout the reporting period. An amount of INR 4 crore sponsored by Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) was made available to the victims of Ockhi disaster in Trivandrum Archdiocese by way of new houses, Income Generation Programs (IGPs), boats and fishing equipments. It is really gratifying to note that most of the victims of the disaster have left their pains behind and started new lives due to the active intervention of TSSS. TSSS has moved forward tremendously taking in the changing social scenario. The whole hearted support of our patron Most Rev. Dr. Soosa Pakiam, the Archbishop always gives me the courage and confidence to venture into new areas. The ever-presence and involvement of our president Rt. Rev. Dr. Christudas R. energizes all of us at TSSS. I thank all the committed members of TSSS for their selfless service for the needy in society. However, as an organization we must ward against complacency and undesired competitions among us to move forward continuously and selflessly.

Fr. Lenin Raj T.

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

After a gap of 7 years I have been given the responsibility of guiding forward Trivandrum Social Service Society once again. I am confident that my past experience with TSSS will help me carry forward the social upliftment activities being undertaken by TSSS as the social action wing of the Social Action Ministry of the Latin Archdiocese of Trivandrum. As I step into my role as the secretary of TSSS once again I am a bit overawed by the large volume of activities presently under taken by TSSS. I hope I can fulfill all the responsibilities of my office utilizing the experience of the old staff and the expertise and energy of the new staff of TSSS. Still I feel that the volume of involvement of TSSS in social field has increased manifold. It gives me a sense of satisfaction to coordinate the activities of TSSS from the Golden Jubilee Building which was a project initiated by me during my previous tenure. With support from the Archbishop, the auxiliary bishop, the fathers of the diocese, the benefactors and all other stakeholders, TSSS aims to achieve its goal of empowering the less fortunate and marginalized. As I assume charge I take this opportunity to knowledge the tremendous contribution Fr. Lenin Raj has made for TSSS as the former director. We wish him all the best for the new venture he has joined in USA. I also gratefully acknowledge the support given by Fr. Dony Paul as the assistant director of TSSS till now.

MESSAGE FROM THE DESK OF ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

I am very happy to write a few words of appreciation on the services rendered to the society by Trivandrum Social Service Society. I have been hearing from my seminary life onwards a lot about the activities undertaken by TSSS. Thereafter I have been looking at TSSS with excitement because of its manifold wonderful activities which marked the Diocese’ love for the poor.

At present I am happy to be a part of TSSS family as Assistant to the Director in the service of the poorest of the poor. It is very clear that TSSS is a good model and example for community based people-led development. Through empowering animation TSSS is able to bring the weaker sections to the forefront of the society. There are no social problems untouched by TSSS. It is very evident that TSSS is always at the service of the needy. Timely response towards the needs of the people has resulted in proper implementation of many projects successfully.

TSSS has become a shelter for many poor and needy. It has touched the lives of many especially weaker sections of the society like children, women, sick, homeless, widows, fishermen, farmers, downtrodden, sidelined etc... Through charity based activities it gives immediate relief to the needy. Apart from charity based activities TSSS stretches its hands to participatory and sustainable envelopment of the community. By timely intervention and immediate help and relief TSSS becomes a light and a shelter at the time of natural calamities and disaster.

It is known to everyone that TSSS family is doing amazing teamwork for the sustainable and integral development of the society. It is because of hard work, patience, collaboration, co- operation, benefactors, good heart of people and selfless teamwork of the director and the staff together with the grace of God the TSSS could accomplish a lot of deep rooted charity works within a short period of time. I extent my prayers, support and collaboration for far and deep reaching services of TSSS. I wish all the blessings and prayers to realize the Kingdom of God through continued selfless and kind acts of charity.

SAVE A FAMILYPLAN (SAFP)

It is a family development programme initiated in Canada, operated through financial assistance from donors and has been implemented in collaboration with local partner organizations in different regions. TSSS is one among the 40 partner NGOs in India. The overall goal of SAFP is to encourage, capacitate and support the poor target families to move towards self- reliance in order to become full contributing members of their local community, thereby, ensures to lead a dignified life. Identified poor families from the less privileged sections of the society are its target group. TSSS implement the Family Development Programme (FDP) of SAFP in 6 coastal region Foranes. At the organizational level two teams - Family Facilitation Team (FFT ) and Family Action Team (FAT ) were constituted for effective planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the programme. 20

The activities undertaken under the programme, in the reporting period , include collection of baseline data , selection and approval of new families, family level planning and development of plans, its implementation, monitoring and evaluation, capacity building and providing financial support for income generation and meeting other basic needs.

The base line data generation process was participatory in nature ensuring active participation of the members of the selected families, which helped the participating families understand their real issues and its causes and the need for improving their capacity to solve the problems by themselves. This was a continuous annual process started in the initial year and continued up to six years. The number of family base line data generated in the year was 316 and there were 405families in the FDP.

Family level planning for six years and preparation of yearly budget and monthly cash flow was another activity which helped the families identify their priority needs and activities to be undertaken to fulfill it within the stipulated period. This was an empowering process which led to take the ownership of the activities by the families themselves.

Capacity building was another support offered for increasing competencies of both FDP families and the coordinating and facilitating staff. The coordinators and animators got training at SAFP India level. The beneficiaries got necessary training on particular subjects during the meeting conducted at the regional and central level. Apart from this an orientation programme was conducted for the new beneficiaries in the Ockhi affected families by the SAFPI team. Mr. Manoj Kumar the Regional programme officer of SAFPI was the resource person.100 beneficiaries from the Ockhi affected families participated in the

programme. The meeting was officiated by His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr.R Christhudas, the Auxiliary Bishop of Latin Archdiocese Trivandrum. The inauguration of the programme was done by Sri. K. Muraleedharan, MLA. This helped the beneficiaries to have a clear idea about the project and also made them aware of their rights and responsibilities of being members of this programme. 21

Monitoring visit to the families by the Coordinator yearly and the animators four times a year help the smooth running of the programme and make the outcome of the programme visible .During the visits we make sure the activities are carried out well and find time to discuss with the family their struggles and provide them necessary inputs to develop themselves.

Monitoring visits The FDP implementation team conducted EDP training for the beneficiaries of the selected families. The EDP trainings helped the participants to develop solid ideas about the working of an enterprise. This enhanced the ability of each participant to initiate any enterprises by their own. Through the programme the members had been trained on different fields like leadership development, production of goods, importance of quality, marketing, sustainability, etc. These trainings lead to start an income generation programme of their own. Providing financial assistance through linkage with various sources and made use of project resources (as shown in the following table), to address the FDP families basic needs and economic stability, was another important activity of the reference year. Several families benefitted from this. Specifically 32 families could occupy a house of their own, 3 families could construct toilets, 6 widows received fund from development schemes, and 7 family got grant for purchasing land and housing.

Income generation programme is done for improving the income of the beneficiary family and have saving for them. IGP is to be started with the support of Local fund mobilization and it is to be started according to the interest of the beneficiaries and the area considering the scope of IGP chosen by the beneficiary and guiding them to do better IGP suited for to the area. The partner families are engaged in different IGP’s.

They are made aware of a disciplined food style for a healthy life. More specifically they are told to avoid the intake of junk food and drinks which are very harmful to their health. They are told to avoid junk food to follow a systematic life style of food habits and balanced diet which will enable them to grow as healthy and strong free from all contagious and incurable diseases.

General Health General health is the most important factor in our health care. ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 2019

V MIGRANTS

Migrants and refugees are not pawns on the chessboard of humanity .They are children, women, and men who leave or who are forced to leave their homes for various reasons, who share a legitimate desire for knowing and having but above all for being more. Migrants in the state who are intending to go abroad in search of employment opportunities are given training and certification of their skills through various programme, by Norka Roots in collaboration with TSSS. This in turn helps the domestic workers to meet the challenges associated with the housekeeping department.

International migrants constitute a substantial percentage of diocesan population and their concerns deserve higher attention. This was a great dream of the Latin Arch Diocese of Trivandrum. To fulfill this dream diocese have decided to be a major stakeholder and have planned this perspective to establish and functionalize a commission for migrants. The main thrust was to focus on migrants to live contented lives, effectively building up their families, productively contributing their employers with honesty and sincerity, getting actively involved in their international living ambience and caring for their own pastoral and spiritual growth guided by true Catholic values and practices.

Migrants Forum

The Diocese began the Migrants Forum in 2011. Sr. Janestus who was the Coordinator then in collaboration with the Norka began pre- departure training, and introduced welfare scheme. She had constant collaboration with Norka Roots, conducted various training programme for migrants with the leadership of known resource persons and gave ample opportunities for domestic works .

Gershom Help Desk The Diocese have established a five year perspective plan in order to extend the services given to the migrants. One of the main focus was to appoint a Priest director , a Sister co-ordinator and a full time staff. “Gershom Help Desk”, an initiative of TSSS Trivandrum under Latin Archdiocese was established on 09-02-2019,as a result of this five year plan. The official inauguration of this Help Desk was done by migrant Mr. Raygeon Gomez from Vizhinjam and the function was presided over by the Auxiliary Bishop Rev. Dr. Christudas. Mr. Ignatius Loyola was the resource person; migrants Executive Secretary and Coordinator were present for all the meetings. For the easy access to the people we have created a whatsapp group, Face book group and Twitter. As a result of this new initiative many took membership in welfare scheme commenced by TSSS. Migrants who were ill-treated and even jailed without proper reasons were brought back through the timely intervention of Norka. A number of fishermen who belongs to Trivandrum Diocese but who had migrated to Quilon Diocese don’t have any membership in their parish. The Executive Secretary and Coordinator visited them and forwarded a letter concerning this matter to the respective Parish Priest. A data collection was done about the migrants who are now abroad, those who came back and those who are wishing to go in future. VI ANTI-ALCOHOL & ENVIRONMENT

ANTI-ALCOHOL ACTIVITIES It is said “it is better to light a candle rather than curse the darkness.” Yes the activities under this forum is similar to the above quote. Alcohol and drug abuse is a complex socio economic issue that requires a total intervention by various agencies and an integrated approach towards a drug free society. Creating awareness about the dangers of the substance abuse in society is very essential. We through our Social Action Ministry reach out to the children, youth, men and women, as they are the target group. The aim of all the programmes are through grass root level intervention bring about prevention of the substance abuse .To attain this aim we give awareness programme to various groups and communities. We also provide counseling service for the individuals as well as for the families.

To attain this programme following means are used: exhibition, drama, street plays, rallys, and house to house campaigns, medical checkup, awareness classes both for children, youth, men and women. Various competitions like drawing, essay, speech and dance to create awareness among the people. We do all this in collaboration with the Excise department and the local community leaders. The motto of the sticker campaign is a beautiful one, “father and brothers that does not use substances is really a blessing for the house and for the society.” We do get many success stories as the children come and narrate to us the changes that have occurred in their families.

It is a great consolation for us to see the effect of this programme, since many have given up the use of alcohol in their lives and living a responsible parenthood.

Kudumba Sangamam Those who have attended the Mukthy De addiction Programme, are given opportunities to come together as a group to pray, to share their experiences of living a life without alcohol & drugs. We have referred four clients to the Pratheeksha and many youth who were living aimlessly, are directed to attend the courses of Community college and still many are directed to the Mukthy De addiction Programme. Many children we have directed for the counseling service at Child line. In the future we look forward to begin a toll free help line number, which would assist number of children, youth and others.

Environment Protection Major thrust under this commission is giving awareness programmes to the public, especially those coming under our 9 foranes. “To Love ones neighbor is to love God” St. Mother Teresa. Following these words, the centre runs the Lenni Peters Home for Girls (Karuna Nivas), a home to satisfy the thirst for love, care, protection and groom the poor children for bright future. Since every child deserves a chance, the centre works towards making this a possibility.

Lenni Peters Home for Girls (Karuna Nivas) is a short stay home for the women and girls in distress. It was established under Trivandrum Latin Archdiocese in 2007. The centre is registered under the orphanage Control Board of social Welfare Department of Kerala. It has got a capacity to accommodate 30 clients. The congregation of Handmaids of hope (HH), Rev Sisters of Bakeetha Bhavan is now in charge of the house.

The Home believes that all children should be given an equal opportunity in life especially when it comes to the provision of basic needs such as food, housing, clothing, health care and education. The children in our Home are therefore given free shelter, clothing, proper medical care and quality education.

In order to promote moral values, the home gives importance to spiritual activities and conducts daily prayers. The Sisters of Bakeetha Bhavan, give proper guidance for their personality development, which enable them to live in amity and fellowship with each other.

Trivandrum Social Service society 57

ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 2019

The centre’s programmes and activities are developed in this context and are designed to achieve the following objectives:

• Foster and allow for the acquisition or recovery of autonomy, skills and competencies that will help women with mental illness to integrate into the community and enjoy a better quality of life. • Encourage integration into the family life, by supporting and fostering an autonomous, integrated and independent working model. • Prevent and / or reduce the risk of psychosocial deterioration and marginalization. • Provide counselling and support to families in handling the problems with which they are confronted.

The rehabilitation process includes a series of programmes based on different interventions and activities. All our values can be summarized in a single one; Hospitality.

Hospitality is an essential human value in the social and health sphere. It consists of providing space and time, assistance and care, humanity and resources to the beneficiaries of our mission.

The global value of hospitality that shapes all our services and cares comprises eight sub-values such as:  Sensitivity for the excluded  Service to the sick and needy  Liberating reception  Integral health  Professional quality  Humanity in care  Ethics in every action  Historical awareness. ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 2019

Taking into account the programmes established in the year 2018 – 2019, we continued with the implementation of the same obtaining positive results that have impacted on the improvement and reinsertion of a large number of residents. In these two years of establishment, the centre has had a great resonance at the social level since in the locality where we carry out this mission, there is a greater harmony and many more people around feel involved in the same.

We can affirm that during this period, several groups have come every month, both from the nearby parishes, as well as from private institutions, societies and families who have contributed food, clothing, cleaning material which has helped and is greatly helping in the successful fulfillment of the mission of the Institution.

Experiences of Volunteers “I never thought that without talking, an inseparable connection could be formed”. The first contact with the residents is an accumulation of sensations highlighting the fact of feeling watched by your skin color, your way of dressing, your way of speaking, everything surprises them. And, suddenly, the questions begin ... and with them the problems that come with the language barrier, part that I would describe as the most complicated of the project.

But in spite of that and of not understanding anything of what we were saying, a bond was created and day by day it became narrower, until reaching limits that I could never have imagined.(LAIA SPINOLA)

“Moment of therapies: All in the rooms, all seated, all the material prepared on time. Mission Impossible!”

If now I move myself to those two months, something that gives me a lot of love is to remember the look, the smile, the gestures of many of the residents, the intrigue of them when we entered the rooms, everything was new for them. In my heart are the therapies of physical activity, the yoga sessions, seeing them all sitting, lying down or in those postures that I showed them, and seeing them breathing, dedicating a moment for themselves, a moment of inner peace. I stay with those moments of sharing body, mind and spirit with them. TANIA AGUILAR)

The Occupational Therapy offered in our centre has improved significantly with the contribution of knowledge by several volunteers from Spain in collaboration with our centres in Barcelona, who have helped us to enhance crafts activities like umbrella making, jewelry making and flower crafting etc. for sale.

Also the days of leisure forms part of the rehabilitation programme. We had made several trips and outings with residents to touristic spots like to Munnar and Kovalam. This also includes simple outings like going to cinema theatre, having the lunch out in the restaurants, doing small shopping’s etc. We can affirm that these

Trivandrum Social Service society 59

ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 2019 activities are very rewarding and generate positive changes on the residents because it helps them socialize and not lose the habits of shopping and managing the money correctly.

Every day the residents collaborate in keeping their living spaces clean and tidy and in carrying out with surprising autonomy the tasks of daily life like personal care, dish washing, cloth washing, cleaning the house, gardening etc. This year we have newly introduced cooking therapy held every Friday in which 6 residents have been involved preparing special dishes that they have shared with all in the centre.

The results obtained by the centreis that out of 40 residents, now 20 are completely autonomous, 10 semi-autonomous and only two are dependent. It has been possible to find the families of four of our residents as a result of a committed and at the same time delicate investigation and searches of the social workers. This year the centre was able to reach three residents back to their their families situated in different states of North India.A training process has begun with the collaborating staff in the centre giving priority to the knowledge and management of mental illness with the guidance and valuable suggestions of Dr. Arun, the Psychiatrist.

The Institution has participated regularly in several meetings organized by the Department of Social Justice in different rehabilitation centres in Kerala. Such meetings are centered on the topics related to Psychiatry, the New Mental Health Acts and Rules issued by Indian Government, new laws and regulations in the care of persons with mentally ill and the due relationship and collaboration the Rehabilitation centres should have with the Government.

Benedict Menni Psychosocial Rehabilitation Centre has continued succesfully its mission of offering an integral and person-centered hospitaller services to women affected with mental illness. Its ongoing, simple but significant advancement is witnessed by the progressive rehabilitation of the residents in the centre. This year the centre was able to have more than 10 residents rehabilitated through its systematic activities and attentive hospitaller care.

After a dedicated searchin collaboration with the government officials, the centre was able to locate the families of three residents and successfully brought them back to their homes. This year our centre was blessed with the enthusiastic collaboration of various volunteers from Spain who significantly contributed with their talents and professional qualities for the rehabilitation and reinsertion of the residents to the society. The centre also was gifted with the visit of many persons, children, youth, families, societies, institutions who spent their valuable time to gladden the life of the residents. This indeed is a sign that the centre is being more open to others, encouraging everyone to participate in the mission of the centre which on its behalf awakens and develops in every person the practice of human and Christian values and especially the social responsibilities towards persons suffering from mental illness paving way to wipe away the social stigma on them.

Menni Family Home, Thirumala The menni family home is a community rehabilitation and reintegration centre with a capacity of 10- 15 patients, all of them women with mental illness and whose care and social autonomy have been compromised.

Activities and therapies are developed in this context and are designed to achieve the following objectives: Trivandrum Social Service society 60

ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 2019

Promoting and allowing empowerment and the recovery of the abilities and competences, in order to help the women with mental illness to reintegrate in the community and experience better quality of life. The centre aims to foster family life integration, helping and promoting an autonomy work model, life for the distresses women and independent. Prevent and reduce psycho – social impairment and exclusion. Provide counseling and support to the families to deal with the problems they are facing. The Menni Family Home is in the third stage in the recovery process and reintegration of women with mental illness run by sisters Hospitallers serve in India. The first two stages are the stabilization and which can be done in the medical centre or in the Benedict Menni Psychosocial rehabilitation Centre. The Menni Family Home is focused in the last stage, consisting of in promoting the autonomy of the inmates and the occupational side. That is the main reason the centre capacity is less and they work as a family where the residents assume all the household duties and participate in the occupational and therapies like going to the market, office tasks…etc. Thus Menni Family Home, Thirumala Prepares the deprived women of our society to get back into the main stream.
