Despite the challenges we and the industry are facing, we are optimistic about 2021. This is because we love cinema and good films and series – and particularly in these difficult times, they are also some thing that is needed by audiences around the world. Time and again in recent years, German feature films and series have succeeded in captivating viewers abroad, and we are confident that this will be the case in 2021 as well. In particular, the new wave of German documentaries is establishing itself increasingly as a favourite with international audiences. We are just as proud of the German Films campaign FACE TO FACE, which has been in existence for six years now, and delighted that we will be able to continue it with a great new pool of talent in 2021 – despite the difficult current conditions. Films and series are created through the work of a large team, which is why we have decided to highlight a greater diversity of film professions in 2021 and are proudly presenting the premiere of our new faces in this issue of GFQ. German Films Quarterly will broaden its format in 2021: We will also open our publication to contri butions dealing with internationally controversial topics in the film industry.

  • UFA Film Nights Go Digital in Anniversary Year
PRESS RELEASE Bertelsmann and UFA present: UFA Film Nights Go Digital in Anniversary Year From August 20 to 22, 2020, legendary silent films with exclusive musical accompaniment can be experienced online “Woman in the Moon,” “People on Sunday,” and “The Adventures of Prince Achmed” each accessible free of charge for 24 hours Music contributed by celebrated DJ Jeff Mills, chillout pioneer Raphaël Marionneau and Ensemble Trioglyzerin Berlin, August 5, 2020 – In light of the current situation, the UFA Film Nights will for the first time take place exclusively online and not with thousands of guests on Berlin's Museum Island. So in its tenth year, the silent film festival is open not only to Berliners, but to movie buffs all over the world. From August 20 to 22, 2020, Bertelsmann and UFA will present the anniversary edition of the UFA Film Nights as part of the digital Culture@Bertelsmann series, featuring three early masterpieces of cinema history, each with exclusive musical accompaniment. The films will be live streamed on the company website as well as on Bertelsmann's YouTube and Facebook channels. The event’s curtain-raiser is Fritz Lang's epochal, technically visionary masterpiece Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon) from 1929, with a musical interpretation by the celebrated DJ Jeff Mills. The pairing was a highlight of last year's UFA Film Nights. This will be followed on the second evening by Menschen am Sonntag (People on Sunday), the legendary homage to Berlin by Robert Siodmak, Edgar G. Ulmer, and Billie Wilder (1929/1930), with DJ Raphaël Marionneau supplying the music.

  • RTL Group Press Release
QUARTERLY STATEMENT RTL Group: first quarter 2020 • Group revenue down 3.4 per cent to €1,466 million • Increased audience shares in Germany, France and the Netherlands; RTL Group’s comprehensive news reporting generates record ratings • Paying subscribers for RTL Group’s streaming services TV Now and Videoland up 34 per cent to 1.53 million Luxembourg, 30 April 2020 − RTL Group today published the following quarterly statement for the first three months of 2020 (Q1/2020). Thomas Rabe, Chief Executive Officer of RTL Group, says: “At RTL Group, we continue to monitor the rapid worldwide spread of the coronavirus disease closely, placing the highest priority on the health of our employees and on protecting our businesses. Our TV channels, radio stations, streaming services and websites have registered significantly higher reach and usage as they provide information and entertainment to millions of people who face unprecedented disruption to their daily lives. RTL Group’s businesses are part of their countries’ critical infrastructure. I am pleased that we are running numerous initiatives that include awareness campaigns and thank-you messages for the daily heroes in the current crisis. At the beginning of March, we registered first cancellations of advertising bookings, as well as postponements of productions. This trend has accelerated with the introduction of wide-ranging lockdown measures across Europe in later March. We are making good progress in implementing counter measures to reduce costs and preserve liquidity. Despite the economic uncertainty, RTL Group’s three-priority strategy – core, growth, alliances & partnerships – remains unchanged. We maintain our mid-term targets for the streaming services TV Now in Germany and Videoland in the Netherlands to grow their total number of paying subscribers to between 5 and 7 million, to grow streaming revenue to at least €500 million and to break even by 2025.

PRESS RELEASE Bertelsmann and UFA Present: UFA Film Nights Delight Live, Open-Air Audience on Berlin’s Museum Island • Digitally restored version of Ernst Lubitsch’s CARMEN celebrated world premiere in sold-out Colonnade Courtyard • Audience also feted the newly composed score by Tobias Schwencke • Actor August Wittgenstein, as the film’s presenter, provided background and context to Lubitsch’s over 100-year-old work • All three masterpieces of cinema history – CARMEN, THE LIGHT OF ASIA and NOSFERATU – are also available as free streams Berlin, August 26, 2021 – The UFA Film Nights 2021 hosted by Bertelsmann and UFA got off to a successful start yesterday in the completely sold-out Kolonnadenhof (Colonnade Courtyard) of Berlin’s Museumsinsel (Museum Island), despite adverse weather conditions. The world premiere of the digitally restored version of Ernst Lubitsch’s “Carmen” was shown to around 500 guests, for the first time in a largely completed cut again and with reconstructed coloring. The film was extensively restored by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation with financial support from Bertelsmann. For Bertelsmann, this was the fourth restoration of an important silent film for which the media company provided significant funding, after “Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari” (“The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”), “Der müde Tod” (“Destiny”) and “Der Geiger von Florenz” (“The Fiddler of Florence”). Karin Schlautmann, Head of Corporate Communications at Bertelsmann, said "Even a century later, silent films still fascinate people. The quickly sold-out screenings of this year's UFA Film Nights and the enthusiasm of our guests at yesterday’s event testify to this. With our long-standing efforts to support cultural heritage and German cinematic heritage in particular, we want to make it clear that we stand by the art and creative works of past generations.
