00:00:02 WELCOME!

THE NETHERLANDS Rob Frambach - Race Director

Finally, the time has come: an IRONMAN 70.3 in the beautiful city of Maastricht.

We are delighted to welcome you to the first edition of IRONMAN 70.3 Maastricht - Limburg. We will work together with you to make a celebration out of it! However, we must consider the measures to be taken to safely organize the event. In the coming period we will elaborate this for you and communicate what you can expect in a timely manner.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Maastricht - Limburg is organized in a region with a rich IRONMAN history. From 2015 to 2018, the IRONMAN Maastricht - Limburg long-distance triathlon took place here. After the disappearance of the long distance, IRONMAN The Netherlands has continued with the IRONMAN 4:18:4 and IRONMAN 5150. More than 50 percent of the athletes who participated in one of the shorter distances now participate in the IRONMAN 70.3 Maastricht - Limburg.

Finally, we express our deepest gratitude for your trust and patience. Also, a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for our hostess, the municipality of Maastricht, the entire team, the suppliers and other partners who have worked with heart and soul to make sure the participants will have an unforgettable weekend.

Sporty greetings,

Rob Frambach Race director IRONMAN The Netherlands

00:00:03 WELCOME!

THE NETHERLANDS Els Visser - Winner 2018

I love Maastricht. The city is in my heart

Welcome athletes to this special city. The place where I won my first IRONMAN, a day I will never forget. I am very honored to be able to work as an ambassador for IRONMAN The Netherlands in the coming years!

Triathlon, what a unique sport it is and what a great passion we share! We all train hard to be able to deli- ver this tough physical and mental performance. We are all going through the same thing and we share our enthusiasm and our adventures. In the coming months I will try to further amplify the pure and deep feelings we all experience so that during one of the IRONMAN competitions such as IRONKIDS, in a sprint, 5i50 or IRONMAN 70.3 competition, you will create memories on which you can always look back on and inspire others!

I see the ambassadorship as an opportunity to create more attention for our sport and for sports in ge- neral. Unfortunately, 50% of the Dutch population over the age of 18 is moderately or seriously obese and 45% of the Dutch do not participate in sports every week. I find this shocking! Sports means, among other things, being fitter, having more energy, being more productive and living a happier life.

In addition to my personal athletic goals, I see it as a mission to get people moving and to let them expe- rience the effect of sports. IRONMAN Netherlands organizes events accessible to everyone. I would love to bring the not yet active athletes together and become part of the IRONMAN family!

After a period in which sport was unfortunately not encouraged by the government and many of us were unable to do anything, we now have the opportunity to organize events again. The start line of the IRONMAN Maastricht is in sight and we can go wild! We all did everything we could to be as fit as possible at the start. I can’t wait to see you race and cheer to the finish!

If you see me walking around, I would really like it when you come up to me for a chat!

Also, I want to tell everyone to believe in yourself. You can do this, and you will make it an unforgettable day. Together you are on the course and together we can do this! Enjoy and see you at the finish!

Love, Els

00:00:010 CORONA MEASURES

THE NETHERLANDS IRONMAN 5150 & 4:18:4 Maastricht - Limburg

The organisation of the IRONMAN 5150 and 4:18:4 Maastricht - Limburg will follow the guidelines pro- vided by the gouvernment. We are continously in contact with the local authorities and are happy to announce that the event will take place. However, we have to implement some measures to ensure the race can take place.

The measures during the event: • The one and a half meter measure applies at all locations, except during sports practice. • During the races it is not mandatory to keep the one and a half meter distance. However, there is plenty of space everywhere for athletes who want it. We ask every athlete to respect the wishes of his or her fellow athletes • Athletes are asked not to bring spectators. Public is not allowed in and around the start and finish area. The swimming course is also hidden from view by means of fencing. • Passers-by and residents alongside the course are asked to respect and comply to the measures in force at that time, including the one and a half meter distancee. The organization monitors compli- ance with the measures along the course. • In addition, you may be requested to wear a mouth mask when entering the starting area. The orga- nization provides this.

Because the guidelines change rapidly, we will inform you in the week before the event about the measures that will be in order during the event.

Please have a look at the following websites for an indication of the guidelines: Het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) - Click here Rijksoverheid - Click here IRONMAN: Return to Racing - Click here

00:00:11 HISTORY

THE NETHERLANDS Origin and development of IRONMAN

We sign the year 1978 Marine Officer John Collins was a night out with some other Marines. The discussi- on arose about the gravity of three sporting events; • Waikiki Swim over 3,8 kilometer, • Around Oahu Bike Ride over 180 kilometer, • Honolulu marathon over 42,195 kilometer.

The evening progressed and it was not even finished. It was decided experimentally to find out which of these races would be the toughest, by pasting them one after the other and doing them themselves. The first arrival was allowed to call himself a man of steel. With that, the first IRONMAN race was a fact. Twelve athletes managed to reach the finish line. The winner was Gordon Haller.

The IRONMAN Hawaii currently has 2,500 participants. The world-famous world long distance champi- onships had a mass start until last year. Nowadays, athletes are divided into different (age) groups and start with time differences.

The following year, 50 participants registered, but the competition was postponed for a day and only 15 participants were at the start. The game was initially held at Honolulu. From 1981, the organization mo- ved to Kona, where today the official World Triathlon Championship is still held annually.

The IRONMAN triathlon became known worldwide in 1982. Julie Moss was in the lead for the women’s race the entire race, but was hit by the man with the hammer 1 kilometer before the finish. Due to dehy- dration, he could no longer stand on her legs and went crawling towards the finish line. Almost no one remembers that she was overtaken by Kathleen McCartney just before the finish, but the images of Julie Moss went all over the world and triathlon became a well-known sport.

The finish cry; “You are an IRONMAN” originated from the mouth of Kona speaker Mike Reilly. In one of his first years as speaker, a friend of his joined in. Out of respect, he spoke the words; You are an IRON- MAN for his friend. The reactions from the audience and from his friend were so overwhelming that Reilly decided to repeat this a number of times, with great success. From that moment on, the iconic image that athletes have at their finish when they hear: “You are an IRONMAN”! and it has become a goal for triathletes to hear these famous words at their finish at least once in their sports career. By the way, the use of these special words only applies to the full distance of the IRONMAN.

The first IRONMAN in Europe is that of Lanzarote, organized since 1992. Dutch victories there for Ben van Zelst, Frank Heldoorn and Katinka Wiltenburg in the past.

The first IRONMAN in the Netherlands took place in Maastricht. Bas Diederen and Yvonne van Vlerken took the win in the first IRONMAN race in the Netherlands in 2015. Dutch win was again in 2018 with Els Visser.

Since 2019 IRONMAN is expanding its empire with so-called IRONMAN Multisport Festivals. Westfriesland had the world’s first in 2019. A multisport festival consists of shorter and accessible distances such as the IRONMAN 4:18:4 (sprint triathlon) and the IRONMAN 5150 (Olympic distance). In 2020, the IRONMAN Westfriesland was expanded with a 70.3. This year’s IRONMAN 70.3 was also added in Maastricht.

Cut off times IRONMAN 5150 Maastricht - Limburg IRONMAN 4:18:4 Maastricht - Limburg Swim 00:55 Swim 00:20 Bike 01:45 Bike 00:50 Run 01:15 Run 00:30 Total cut off time 03:55 Total cut off time 01:40

Each discipline has an individual cut-off time. So you have to complete all three parts within the given time. If you don’t finish a discipline within time, but it is still safe to continue, you can finish the event and you get a DQ as a time format. The organization determines whether it is still safe for you to finish the competition.

00:00:16 PRACTICAL INFORMATION

THE NETHERLANDS Prepared at the start

Swimstart • Take your white bag (clean clothes for after the race) with you when entering the starting area and drop it off at the drop-off point. The organization ensures that these bags end up in the BLACKROLL® Recovery Finishzone so that you have them at your disposal after the competition. • All athletes are obliged to use the swimming caps handed out by the organization. • Before the start you will be checked for wearing the swimming cap and timing chip (on the left ankle). It also checks whether or not to wear a wetsuit. • At the rolling start of the swimming part, the athlete passes a timing mat. No time can be obser- ved of athletes jumping over the fences or entering the water at another point. The athletes must leave the swimming course via the official exit and walk over the time registration mat. Otherwi- se, the organization cannot check whether an athlete is still in the water and may be in distress. The organization must then call in a rescue team to search for this athlete. The athlete is liable for the costs of this rescue operation. • If for any reason you cannot complete the swimming part, you must report directly to an official. • IRONMAN The Netherlands has set a rolling swimming start for its competitions. • Athletes start according to their realistically estimated swimming time. • Every 10 seconds, 5 athletes are let into the water. • After you pass the timing mat, your time starts. From that moment on, the cut off time ap- plies. • As soon as all individual participants have started, the relay teams start.

The IRONMAN Multisport Festival Maastricht -Limburg,normally with start and finish in the city centre, have been partly moved to ensure the passage of the event. The start location and also transition zone is located on the Griend, so there is also swimming in the Maas from the Kleine Griend, this is the normal starting location. From the Griend the cycling trail starts, this trail leads you through the beautiful South Limburg Hill country. The running course goes via Oost-Maarland to and back again. The finish location is located this year at the Governorate in Maastricht. This location was the most suitable yet uni- que location that we found for you as a one-off alternative to the city center.

The registration, merchandise, athletes briefing and Expo are located on the “van Hasseltkade”, collecti- vely this area is called the IRONMAN Village.

THE NETHERLANDS All information for Relay Teams

Registration Registration must be done by each team member, each team member must also submit a signed waiver. Relay teams receive: 1 start number and 1 timing chip (at bike check-in). However, each team member receives an athlete’s bag. It is checked whether each athlete has registered and whether a contact person is listed in case of an emergency.

Bike check-in Relay teams must check in their bikes like individual athletes. However, athletes from relay teams do not check in colored transition bags because athletes do not have to change. Athletes attach their helmet to the bike at check-in.

Transition zone Relay teams have indicated their own location in the transition zone with the sign ‘Team change zone’.

Timingchip and startnumber The timing chip and start number are transmitted to the team location in the transition zone. The timing chip is passed from the swimmer to the cyclist. The cyclist already wears the start number. On return, the cyclist hands over the timing chip and the starting number to the runner. Relay participants can finish together! Please consider other finishers. They too are entitled to a nice finish moment.

Swimmer Before the competition, the swimmer can bring a sports bag to the transition zone. The bag is delivered to the transition zone and is picked up after the swim in the ‘relayteams’ area.

Cyclist The cyclist takes the blue transition bag with equipment. This can be brought to the transition zone be- fore the start. This is hung on the bag rack on start number.

Runner The runner gets a white transition bag. It is brought to the transition zone before the start, and the orga- nization brings it to the BLACKROLL Recoveryzone.

A relay team consists of 2 or 3 athletes. The decision which team member swims, cycles and runs can be made at the latest until registration.
