Locomotory Modes in the Larva and Pupa of Chironomus Plumosus Journal of Insect Physiology 46 (2000) 1517–1527 www.elsevier.com/locate/jinsphys Locomotory modes in the larva and pupa of Chironomus plumosus (Diptera, Chironomidae) John Brackenbury Department of Anatomy, University of Cambridge, Downing Street, Cambridge CB2 3DY, UK Received 2 October 1999; received in revised form 6 April 2000; accepted 6 April 2000 Abstract The locomotory kinematics of Chironomus plumosus larvae and pupae were investigated in order to determine how different locomotory techniques may be related to (a) possible underlying patterns of muscle activation and (b) the particular lifestyles and behaviours of these juvenile stages. Larvae display three independent modes of motile activity: swimming, crawling and whole- body respiratory undulation. Swimming and respiratory undulation involve the use of metachronal waves of body bending which travel in a head-to-tail direction. Whereas swimming is produced by side-to-side flexures of the whole body, respiratory undulation employs a sinusoidal wave. Crawling appears to result from an independent programme of muscle activation. Instead of a longitudi- nally transmitting metachronal wave of body flexure, a simultaneous arching of the body, combined with the alternating use of the abdominal and prothoracic pseudopods as anchorage points, produces a form of locomotion analogous to caterpillar-looping. Larval swimming has a set speed and rhythm and is an ‘all-or-nothing’ locomotory manoeuvre, but the neural programme controlling larval crawling is adaptable; switching from a less to a more slippery substrate resulted in a shorter, faster stepping pattern. The pupa displays two swimming modes, somersaulting and eel-like whole-body undulation, the former being principally a brief, escape manoeuvre, the latter being a faster form of locomotion employed to deliver the pupa to the surface prior to adult emergence. Comparison with the pupa of the culicid Culex pipiens shows that this insect also uses the somersault mechanism but at a higher cycle frequency which produces a faster swimming speed. This appears to be related to differences in lifestyle; the surface-living culicid pupa is exposed to greater predator threat than the bottom-dwelling chironomid pupa, and consequently needs a faster escape. 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Macrophytes and macroinvertebrates were sampled and environmental variables were measured. The water bodies appeared to have a high biodiversity and a good ecological quality.

WUELKER* Chironomids have giant chromosomes with useful characters: different chromosome number, different combination of chromosome arms, number and position of nucleolar organizers, amount of heterochromatin, presence of puffs and Balbiani rings, banding pattern. For comparison of species, it is important that the bands or groups of bands can be homologized. Chromosomes are nearly independent of environmental factors, however they show variability in form of structural modifications and inversion polymorphism. Systematic aspects: New species of chironomids have sometimes been found on the basis of chromosomes, e.g. morphologically well defined "species" turned out to contain two or more karyotypes. Chromosome preparations were also sometimes declared as species holotypes. Moreover, chromosomes were helpful to find errors in previous investigations or to rearrange groups.- Nevertheless, where morphology and chromosomal data are not sufficient for species identification, additional results of electrophoresis of enzymes or hemoglobins as well as molecular-biological data were often helpful and necessary . Ecological, parasitological and zoogeographical aspects: An example of niche formation are the endemic Sergentia-species of the 1500 m deep Laike Baikal in Siberia. Some species are stenobathic and restricted to certain depth regions. The genetic sex of nematode-infested Chironomus was unresolved for a long time. External morphological characters were misleading, because parasitized midges have predominantly female characters. However, transfer of the parasites to species with sex-linked chromosomal characters (strains of Camptochironomus) could show that half of the parasitized midges are genetic males.

Zoobenthos and zooplankton made the greatest contribution to diets, both numerically and by weight. Terrestrial invertebrates made up a small proportion of the diet numerically but a large proportion of the diet mass during the spring and summer. Nektonic prey were present throughout the year but made up a very small proportion of diet. Cannibalism was important when eggs and larvae were present in the pond. Electivity values were consistently positive for chironomids (larvae and pupae) and daphnids but were consistently negative for tubi®cids. In addition, electivity increased for larger sizes and pupae of Chironomus plumosus, but was low for the largest size class (>12 mm). Electivity of other taxa showed an increase when densities of chironomids and daphnids were reduced. Mean sizes of daphnids and cyclopods were consistently larger in frog stomach contents than in the water column, indicating that predation on zooplankton by Xenopus laevis is size-selective. British mosquitoes currently do not carry human diseases, but they are a biting nuisance. Their distribution, abundance, species composition and potential for mosquito disease transmission are intimately linked to the physical environment. Culex pipiens is commonly found in UK gardens and is a potential vector of viruses including the West Nile Virus. However, any environmental factors that significantly change the distribution and population of Cx. pipiens could impact future risks of disease transmission. Pond dyes are a cosmetic product for garden ponds and lakes; they inhibit algal growth and improve the overall appearance of the water body reflecting surrounding planting. The dyes block red light from entering the water, interrupting the process of photosynthesis and therefore inhibiting the growth of certain aquatic plants such as algae.

Its objective was to test whether temporal changes in density of the larvae affect their horizontal microdistribution and burrowing depth. Horizontal distribution, as inferred from indices of dispersion and patchiness, was density-dependent. The larvae spread more regularly with increasing density. The decreased density was associated with an increase in clustered distribution. The larvae burrowed into sediments up to a depth of 25 cm. The maximum burrowing depth positively correlated with total density, but also depended on the size of the larvae. The smallest individuals (<10 mm) did not occur deeper than 5 cm.     6-1 6.0 Benthos 6.1 Introduction Benthic macroinvertebrates are animals living at least part of their life cycle upon or within the available substrate (e.g., bottom sediments, debris, vascular plants, filamentous algae, etc.) in an aquatic environment. Benthic organisms are less mobile than fish and require relatively longer periods to complete the aquatic portion of their life cycle than plankton. Since benthic organisms exhibit limited mobility and relatively long life cycles, they are often slow to recolonize areas subjected to severe environ mental perturbations. The specific types and number of benthic organisms pre sent at a site tend to reflect extreme rather than average environmental con ditions which have occurred in the recent past. This reflection of extremes enables the benthos to act as detectors of even occasional severe environmental changes. (Garton and Harkins, 1970; Weber, 1973) The major taxonomic groups comprising a freshwater benthic community may include flatworms, roundworms, annelids, molluscs, crustaceans, and insects. Such a taxonomically diverse benthic community would contain organisms partici pating in the aquatic food web at several trophic levels (i.e., some groups of benthic organisms are considered herbivores, other omnivores, while still others are carnivores) (Weber, 1973). Assuming organisms in one trophic level may be more sensitive to a particular adverse environmental condition than organisms in some other trophic level, an analysis of the physical "well-being" of the benthic community may yield valuable information concerning the suitability of an area for organisms occupying various levels of the trophic structure. Based on pupal exuviae, two sympatric pupal forms of Chironomus plumosus auctt. are present in the museum materials collected in 1952–1962 from the brackish water near the Tvärminne Biological Station at the northern Baltic Sea. The predominating undescribed type of the pupal exuviae is called here the “Bal- tic marine species” (possible C. plumosus sensu Linnaeus; direct observations by Linnaeus of Tipula plumosa from freshwater are not on record). Its pupal exuviae and the associated female and male from the Tvärminne population are de- scribed. Attempts to find larvae of the genus Chironomus in the sea area of Tvärminne for the renewed and more complete studies failed during the 1980s and 1990s. Only two larvae of the undescribed species of the karyological Chiro- nomus plumosus group were captured. The possible reasons for the supposedly changed environmental conditions are discussed. M. Chironomidae, or non-biting midges, are found worldwide in a wide variety of aquatic habitats. During periods of mass adult eclosion they can become a nuisance and health hazard. Current control methods target the aquatic larval stage and include the use of insect growth regulators or insecticides, which may be prohibited in certain environments or affect non-target organ- isms. The aim of this study was to investigate whether entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) of the families Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae, currently employed for control of terrestrial crop pests, could be used as a viable biocontrol for the aquatic larval stages of the Chrionomidae, offering an alternative to current chemical methods. We demonstrate that Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev, 1934), Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser, 1955), Steinernema kraussei (Steiner, 1923) and Heterorhabditis bacterio- phora (Poinar, 1975) are able to survive in water up to 96 h and are able to parasitize and kill Chironomus plumosus (Linnaeus, 1758) larvae, with mortality observed after just 24 h exposure and with < 20% survival after 4 days.
